A great remake of the Death Wish movies
by MC (5 out of 5 stars)
July 19, 2018

A great remake of the Death Wish movies; in my humble opinion Bruce Willis is great and plays the role with his unique acting style. The movie plot is excellent with the story becoming very real with todays real life crimes that affect people at an unexpected part of their life. Sad how awful crimes still are very prevalent in society today, and as much if not more than before. This movie will not disappoint you if you like action movies with high quality acting, directing coupled with a very well written story/script.

Lame

Who knew Chicago was full of white robbers and murderers (with a few indeterminate...Asians? tossed in) who all listen to heavy metal music. Lame. Totally unbelievable.

Charles Bronson would be happy to see the movie remade this way

Interesting twist on the old story. And a bit spooky showing you how easy it is with today's technology for fools to want to do you harm. This was not the typical "I'm already trained and good at everything" Bruce Willis movie. His character goes through a long learning curve to evolve into what he needs to be. I really liked it. And the ending was the right ending too.

Surgeon By Day, Vigilante By Night

Death Wish is a great mindless action movie that has put Bruce Willis back in the driver's seat. He definitely took a lot of bad roles in the last decade, but this one definitely kicked ass! The one thing that was a shock to me was, Eli Roth directed this. When I first saw the previews for this, I remember thinking to myself, "That looks cool!" but didn't notice Eli Roth's name. After seeing his moves, I gave up on him for having the most gruesome movies that were horrible, but not this one! I don't want to say anything about this movie and spoil it, but I can recommend this movie to action junkies who love action and don't need a deep heavy plot to enjoy it. If you're in the group of hating that type of genre, I don't recommend this for you. Whether you rent or buy, you won't be disappointed!

Remake, Not really
by ERROL (4 out of 5 stars)
January 23, 2019

Set up is the same as in the Bronson original, but, in Chicago, not NY. The brutality of the family attack is not on screen, which I credit to Eli Roth the director. Bruce Willis plays the part well and he understates it to his credit. When the police have no clue, he decides to do something and gets himself into the lower end of society, from where he comes from as a doctor, only sees it through the Hospital ER. The debate of whether it is right or wrong is a distraction, wasn't necessary in my opinion. Remember, back in the 1970's in NY, crime was out of control and no matter what the politicians boast of safe cities now, watch the news and tell me it's not similar. Bruce's John McClain character only really comes out in the end, again to his credit. He is emotional and is true to his convictions that he is only doing this because no one else can, even though he is starting to spiral into personal chaos. See it, but don't expect a sloppy Bronson remake which by the way was the talk of the town back then.

I rented this movie with apprehention... BUT -

I was pleasantly surprised by this remake, starring Bruce Willis. I have seen all the Death Wish movies with Bronson and I thought they were awesome. And nothing will change my mind about that. This remake, though, was extremely well done. I'd like to see more with Willis, following up on the series. Always have been a Bruce Willis fan and I like the way he gets into the role he plays in ANY movie. This one suited him well. It was one of those remakes that had a few surprises compared to the original. Loved it and I will buy the DVD. It's a keeper!!!

Worth purchasing

Generally follows the script for he original when setting the stage for retribution. Just as inventive and creative as the original, but is more amusing in places and has more dark humor, too. It stopped somewhat short of the original, but the industry has progressed in the quality of filming and I know my TV is far more sophisticated than the movies were back in the time of the original production, so the overall effect is more pleasing. I hope Death Wish 2, 3 and 4 are improvements of each privious number as were the original sequels. I am a big Bruce Willis fan so he can make this a good series.

It Was Just OK
by Lynda Dunbar (3 out of 5 stars)
August 10, 2018

It was ok. As with all remakes, they're never as good as the originals. It's ashame that Hollywood can't come up with their own ideas instead of trying to capitalize on someone else's success. No talented writers left in that town. As for this remake... The movie was ok. While I like Bruce Willis, he's no Charles Bronson and didn't play the character of Kersey nearly as well.

Not Convinced
by helpingout (1 out of 5 stars)

I think this is the worst I've ever seen Bruce Willis. He's either lost his mojo or he mailed in this performance. Where was the emotion? His wife was shot and killed. He shed no tears. No outbursts of anger, nothing to lead me to believe he wanted revenge. His character was so emotionless he could have gone home, watched the game, and went to sleep. His performance is just not believable. What's more sad is the rating this movie has on Amazon. Some people, a majority it seems thinks this is good. The standards for great acting have fallen so far. I miss the 90s. That was the best decade for movies. I fear that we'll never see another like it. When Aquaman makes almost a billion dollars with a bunch of B movie stars then you know we're in trouble.

Boring
by Joseph LaCerra (1 out of 5 stars)
February 27, 2019

***Mild Spoiler*** The movie is boring, despite its constant scenes of violence. Bruce Willis seems comatose as he plods through this unimaginative remake of the '70s Charles Bronson classic. Willis' character shows no emotion in any situation in the movie, keeping the same stone face during family breakfast, wife's funeral, or murdering evil doers. An out-of-its-time movie to begin with, it cannot entertain with its main star absent. The supporting players all seem equally disinterested, except perhaps Elizabeth Shue, who is killed off early for her efforts. This is one to miss.
