A Good Idea, but Has Some Shortcomings
by Succinct Reviews (3 out of 5 stars)
July 16, 2018

I have mixed feelings about this crayon melter. Consequently, I've listed the pros and cons.

Pros
- Kids loved it. My 9 year-old niece, and my five year old niece used it (with adult supervision)
- It kept my nieces engaged for over an hour.
- It's an interesting medium for kids to explore.

Cons
- The unit needs to be plugged in to an outlet to work and the cord is short. Consequently, you can't really use it anywhere you want.
- You have to hold the dispenser straight for it to work properly. This was a little frustrating for my nieces, since they tended to hold it as an angle like a pencil.
- Needs Adult Supervision - Be prepared to supervise your children while using this crayon melter. This isn't a toy you want them using independently. If not used properly it can cause a big mess.
- The pen clogged after using a few crayons. We had to "push" the clogged crayon with a pen so that it would melt properly. Next time I will use a blow dryer to blow hot air into the crayon holder. Hopefully, this will melt any clogged pieces.
- Your kids will need to be mindful of how the hold the pen. If they hold it upside down, the melted crayon will seep out.
- The crayons are used up pretty quickly. I plan to purchase a cheap brand of crayons at the dollar store. Otherwise, the cost would be too high.
- The price of the unit is too high. Currently, the price is $31.95, plus shipping. This product is not worth that kind of money. I would say to try it if you can find it under $15.

For the record, some reviewers complained that you aren't able to make straight clean lines. That's correct. However, this wasn't an issue for us since this isn't a medium that I thought would provide perfect lines. There is a learning curve to using the pen. You must hold the pen straight and press gently. If you want thinner lines you need to move the pen quickly so the melted crayon doesn't pool into a big mess.

Takes coloring with crayons to a whole, new level!
by Terry (4 out of 5 stars)

This Crayon Melter from Crayola takes coloring with crayons to a whole, new level!

This is a chunky pen that, when loaded with crayon, melts the crayon so that it flows out of the pen as a liquid and puts down a thicker, more opaque color than when using crayons traditionally. In the box, you get the pen, a stand for the pen, a tool for removing the paper from crayons and for cleaning the pen, a power cord, 8 unwrapped crayons, an instruction page and a practice page for getting used to using the pen.

You just break off a bit of unwrapped crayon and load it into the top of the pen. Plug in the power cord and then place the pen in the stand til the light glows green - indicating the pen is ready for use. It melts the crayon in about 30 seconds so it's very fast.

Remove the pen from the stand, still plugged in, and begin drawing on paper, wood, fabric - all sorts of surfaces. Anywhere crayon will work, this pen will work.

The pen uses a roller ball in the tip and it produces a pretty wide line. It also has a tendency to blob a bit so you'll need to have paper towels on hand to wipe the tip pretty frequently. Because the line is so thick, you really can't produce intricate drawings unless your child is working on a large scale - like a big sheet of poster board. However, the resulting lines are thick, completely opaque, somewhat glossy and somewhat raised so it's a little dimensional and provides bolder color. It also dries very quickly once it exits the pen.

You should realize that just a tiny bit of crayon goes a long way and you need to use up what's in the pen before you change colors so just load a small piece of crayon at a time. Also, a tiny bit will still be inside so the next color will likely have small streaks of the previous color.

The pen and the stand is made of plastic so it likely won't handle a lot of rough use or being dropped repeatedly.

I got this for use when my 8 year old granddaughter visits but I can see many craft uses for it. I'm going to try using it as a resist when dyeing fabric. My granddaughter loves it and decorated a small wooden box and it looks wonderful.

Don't waist your money!

Doesn't work! We read the directions and tried everything! It is so messy and what it does produce looks nothing like the picture. I'm not sure if what I got was defective or if it just sucks in general. But I'm so frustrated with the results I'm not willing to try another one.

Doesn't work!

Bought this as a gift for my nephew. He was super excited to try it. It didn't work. Wouldn't melt the crayons. They messed with it for two hours trying to get it to work. I returned the item and got a different one assuming it was just a bad one. Nope. The second one doesn't work either. Nephew is so disappointed now. I have to find him a new present to make up for the crappy one I tried to give him twice.

Frustrating

My kids love arts and crafts but this one was a disappointment- you can't change colors easily you can only use the pen in a certain way the colors blend together - more frustrating than fun

Very frustrating
by H_Woodbury (3 out of 5 stars)

We got this for our 8 yo son because he would not stay out of my wax warmer! We thought this might curb his curiosity with melted wax. It started off well - he did the test sheet with no problems. Once the initial crayon ran out, though, is where the problems started. He put another piece of crayon in to melt (not Crayola). It seems like, for safety's sake, the warmer does not get warm enough to completely melt the crayons and they clog it up. I unplugged it and pushed a wooden skewer down and moved the unmelted pieces around, hoping to get them melted. It helped a little, but not enough to make it usable. We're going to exchange it and try again, but it seems from other reviews that this is the norm for this toy. It's a good concept but it needs word. VERY frustrating for an 8 year old boy who has asked for this toy for Christmas every time he's seen it in the store.

I had not seen this product and someone brought it to my attention when I needed a Birthday Gift for an 8 year old. It was delivered quickly. The Child was thrilled when she opened it and used it right away without any issues.

Fun and easy to use.

I got this for my kids for Christmas. I got it out of the box to figure it out and I had a hard time handing it over to the kids. It's fun and easy to use. My 4 year old loves to doodle and he had fun with this new tool. I may need buy one or two more since I have a few Art loving kiddos. My only complaint so far is that the cord is too short. But I still feel it deserves 5 stars.

Great boredom buster
by Faith Ann (5 out of 5 stars)
February 15, 2019

I got this for my 9-year-old daughter for Christmas and she has done every craft kit known to man so this was out of the ordinary and when it came up as a Lightening Deal, I jumped on it and I'm so glad I did!

It is a great way to use up that bin of broken crayons and it is an unusual way to make art as opposed to markers, paint, etc. Also, I think it smells phenomenal because hello, warm crayons!

It comes with a great little stand and the whole unit is safe to touch so if your little artist is clumsy and drops it or grabs it without thinking, they aren't going to burn themselves like they would with a hot glue gun!
