A master of improvisation, Haynes is renowned for his highly expressive style and quick-fire snare technique, which earned him the nickname Snap Crackle. His adaptability to style, and skilful arrangement, led to him playing in just about every subgenre of jazz, including swing, bop, jazz fusion and avant-garde, and his name has appeared on the records of Miles Davis, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Sonny Rollins, Sarah Vaughan, Stan Getz, Bud Powell, Oliver Nelson, McCoy Tyner and Chick Corea, among many others. His finest albums however appeared in the early part of his recording career, often when fronting his own groups. This collection brings together nine of Roy Haynes' finest works from the early part of his career, including each of his releases as bandleader up to 1964.
