Beware poor customer service and unknown source of ingredients!

Beware of a company with poor customer service. I question the source and quality of this product's ingredients. Their phone number doesn't work, you are on hold all day if you'd like. I sent 8 emails and even messaged them on Facebook all with a simple question, " Where are your ingredients sourced from?". They refuse to answer my question or acknowledge me at all. Since the cost is cheap buyer beware. They have yet to respond and I have been trying to get an answer to my question for 6 weeks. I recently found out that some companies source their HCL and Pepsin from Aspergillus Niger aka MOLD.

Aspergillus Niger can make a sensitive person sick!! There is not a lot of info out there on this, but it's extremely horrible for a persons heslth to ingest. Also as a side note, lots of pet companies foods and supplements are full of Aspergillus Niger. My advice : avoid this at all costs. I started out strong w this supplement but after a couple of weeks started to become beyond lethargic after taking this. I don't know if it's due to the poor ingredients,such as Aspergillus Niger, or if I have a sensitivity to Pepsin...and since the company won't respond I do not know for sure. I just ordered HCL from Douglas Laboratories. It's pricey but they are a reputable company. I plan on contacting them tomorrow to find out where they source their ingredients from. Will update when I have. I'm not sure if I am sensitive to Pepsin- my muscle

testing says that I am- so I will be trying out Douglas Lab HCL with no Pepsin tomorrow. I gave this product one star because as a small business owner myself I absolutely pride myself in excellent customer service and find it extremely annoying that this company has such a great label "gmo

Free" " gluten free" and such poor customer service. None of their labeling and claims matter much to me if they source their product from mold ( Aspergillus Niger). FYI NOW brand HCL w Pepsin comes from Aspergillus Niger. Good luck to everyone out there, need to watch what products you ingest. Knowledge is power.

Strong toxic smell!

This is my second time buying this product. First time I bought it in April and was preparing to restock the supply, since the first bottle was almost over. Looks like I bought it with my husband's amazon account. And this time the transaction was made from my account. So, I can't tell for sure whether it's the same seller or not.

The second bottle arrived fast, wasn't any different from the first one. When I opened it and took the first pill, I felt a very strong synthetic smell of plastic. I thought that maybe I didn't wash my cup well and forgot about the case. Later in the day I was taking another pill before eating my lunch and the same smell and very strong taste was felt in my mouth so that I immediately felt nauseous about it. Since it was in my mouth and I was already drinking water, I just swallowed it. Next , I opened the bottle cap and sniffed inside of it. A strong overwhelming toxic smell came to me. I got scared that the outer shell of the capsule might have been made of toxic material.

I inspected the bottles, they were absolutely the same excluding the number on the bottom of it. On the attached picture the left bottle with black color inscription had this toxic smell. I suppose it's a different batch from the factory , since the first bottle was bought in April, or another guess is that I just received a counterfeit product.

Please, be aware , don't put yourself under the risk of intoxication by cheap materials!

I'm returning this bottle immediately.

Bad side effects = Acute Respiratory distress

I have used several brands of Betaine HCl with pepsin... with varying degrees of benefits... However this was the first time that I experienced any actual negative side effects...

Let alone serious side effects: my chest became tight - like inside my lungs, and I was having a difficult time breathing, coughing, at times I thought I was having the start of bronchitis, it would become bad enough that I began to wonder if I was going to need an inhaler... there were a few times between 15 and 30 years ago that my health was bad enough in some situations that I had been helped that way...but looking back the symptoms started the same day I received & began using the Nutricost Betaine HCl + pepsin... and got worse everytime... I finally realized/woke upwhen symptoms started aggresively & acutely about halfway through a meal taking them in between portions of meal as I have done for the past several years ( I have a Achlorhydria / very severe Hypochlorhydria, so I take anywhere from 24 to 60 depending on size of meal and amount of protein, sounds like a lot, but I suffered ever since I was a child and never knew, all the while getting worse, HCl & Pepsin was almost half the cause, symptoms were everything everything = blood work was always good, doctors always said "you're healthy" despite always being sick - I've outlived three of them, really began to question their intent 30 years ago, mostly stopped taking there advice & prescriptions about 20 years ago = began seeking knowledge and understanding to be a better doctor to myself effort is worth it, you are your own best or worst physician, no one else can care for this body but you period! = so being able to live & be alive with only supplements and not taking any prescriptions, and have relatively good health while everyone else is slipping away drugged into mindlessness is worth every step taken to be present & to wake up breathe = another glorious day)

The ingredients "listed" are "almost" the same as the NOW brand which Ialways take and never have issues with ...
...however the supplement facts label strength/amount reference of:

Nutricost brand says: Pepsin (1:10,000) 140 mg

vs.

NOW brand says: Acid Stabile Protease (150 SAPU) (Fungal Pepsin from Aspergillus niger) 150mg

Look into products that fully disclose their ingredients & processes, avoid those that do not... the SAPU rating is about functional actual bioavailable active components...

other than that, I really wonder if the Nutricost is contaminated or maybe manufactured in a way that other species of molds grow as well, or something... I ordered like 20 or 30 of them because they were like half price thinking well they, I can save, considering how many I use to keep my system running smooth = wow, not what I was expecting... word of caution would be: No two products are the same, a bad reaction with one brand or even one version is not mean that it is all bad. ... I had a powdered version of an amino acid that caused me all kinds of side effects... but the same dosage&same brand but just in capsule form was no problem... don't be too quick to judge... I have also read many comments on people who took a few or six or nine capsules of Betaine HCl with pepsin and never experienced the warmth or hunger pains, so they stopped taking them leaving comments that they didn't think they were effective/waste of money = I used to think the same thing for years too, eventaking as many as 15 or 16 being scared that I might "take too many" ... fear ! ...your stomach is supposed to be a pH of less than 3 at a minimum just to get your esophageal(cardiac) sphincter to close so that you don't suffer acid-reflux/herd...and to actually digest anything a pH of between 1 and 2 generally... and a decent can of soda is 2.5 if it is any good...ever wonder why so many people settle a meal with soda? ...well that and caffeine stimulates smooth muscle contraction and moves things along out of stomach quicker keeping the risk of reflux minimal = pop doesn't help you digest the proteins though & it is too easily un-buffered so enzymes, which need acid to work are not effectively utilized, so don't go off thinking pop is a better solution, sure it'll help some symptoms, but down the road chronic malnutrition will manifest in so many ways as "other" diagnoses...

Game changer for digestion!! I had no idea that I had low HCL until having tried several different brands of enzymes with little relief. These pills are good quality and do what they say they will. Decreased gas and no more gurgling stomach!!
