Product Description

Want to restrain your dog in the car but worried they will chew through a standard webbing seat belt? Our pet seat belt car restraint is made of vinyl coated steel rope - the same material used in dog tie-outs. We designed this product to help dog owners keep their dogs restrained in a car without worrying about chewing.

Our dog restraint attaches to your cars latch bars which are standard on ALL vehicles. These bars are designed for child car seats and are welded directly to your cars frame.

PLEASE MEASURE from your dog's normal height to the LATCH bar at a 45 degree angle before ordering to ensure the right size is ordered.
Length of restraint represents clip to clip distance.

SIZING ESTIMATES based on distance from LATCH bar to dog car harness with clip on dog's back.
16 Inches - Small Dogs - 0-20 lbs
21 Inches - Medium Dogs - 20-40 lbs
26 Inches - Large Dogs - 40-60 lbs
31 Inches - X-Large Dogs - 60-80 lbs
36 Inches - XX-Large Dogs - 80+ lbs

TIPS FOR MEASURING - Please take a moment to put your dog in the car with a tape measure, and measure from dog's clip attachment point to LATCH bar in standing and sitting position. If this is not possible, measure from your pet's clip attachment point to the floor at 45 degree angle to determine best size. Save hassle and headache of returns/exchanges by measuring first. When in doubt, please order a size up.

Unsafe to Use as Shipped; Easy to Mod

I urge anyone not to purchase this product unless they're able to replace the clip that's supposed to attach the restraint to the seat belt. That clip is absolutely flimsy, and my dog simply jumped into the front seat as though he'd never been clipped. It's only a super thin piece of 1/4" wide spring metal that's supposed to protect my dog. It's frightening that someone - anyone - might have thought this clip was a good choice. In an accident, he'd be right out there, panicked, in traffic.

That said, the cable itself is so excellent, so well made, that it's worth buying this device, and replacing the seat belt clip. I used a steel locking carabiner, also called a quick link chain connector to grab the nylon part of the belt just behind the receiver, and through the loop of this restraint. Twist the nut closed, and your pooch will be as safe as can be. He can't bite through this one to get up front, and he can't step on the seat belt release, freeing himself from the standard seat belt pet restraints.

Tested it out picking him up to come home for the weekend. It went really well and he did not mind it at all. He is doing rehab after having two TPLO surgeries from a not at fault car accident. I have noticed since our car accident I have been more focused on him and his safety when I come to stops and when taking off. So, this has really helped with my anxiety and putting me at ease so I can focus on the road.
**Pitbull 87lbs stands at 27inches tall from top of head/ears to floor. Sits at 29inches tall from top of head/ears to floor. So, I brought the XXL for weight requirement and for the *extra length so he can to sit comfortable, turn around, not get tangled, and lay down. Perfect size and length. Worked out perfectly.

My Rogue has tie-down metal clips in the cargo area which is what I connected the seatbelt to. The weight of each individual clip can hold up to 150lbs.

Good even for the giant breeds

These are the best dog car seat teether. I have a Leonberger, and started him on this when he was 8 weeks old, at that time he only needed the shortest one. But as he grew, this was way too short, so I bought the medium one, this worked for a while, but soon it was also too short. Putting the two together made it too long and my boy had access to the whole seat, which I didn't want. So I was very happy when I saw that a 31" teether was now available, I was so excited. My leonberger is 31" at the shoulder and this teether is just the answer to keeping him secure in the back seat. He has room to seat and put his head out the window and he is able to lie down without difficulty. A request would be to make a 36" teether, as I'm sure he will be outgrowing this one too. Thank you for thinking of the giant breeds.

Great leash!
by T.P. (5 out of 5 stars)
March 23, 2017

This is a great leash and it's working very well for my dog. He has gotten it in his mouth once or twice, but after realizing he can't chew it, he doesn't bother it anymore. It is sturdy and well-made, and I don't think it would be too heavy for even small dogs. As others have stated, the size guide is an issue. I read reviews that said the leash was short, so I ordered a large even though I have a 25 lb. cocker spaniel. And I'm glad I did. This size allows him to both sit and stand in the back seat. But even with a large, I wasn't able to tether to the top latch, which was my preference, and still have him be able to sit comfortably, so I have to use an under-seat latch. This slightly compromises the room available for anyone sitting in that seat, but the seat can still be used when the dog is tethered, and overall I'm very happy with my purchase. It solves the problem I intended to solve, which was my dog chewing through the restraint. Just as with the sizing of some clothing lines, my advice would be to "order up." And maybe also consider not just the size of your dog, but the height of your back seats, if you intend to use the top latch.

Anchor tether is a strong way to attach the cable. I feel confident my dog is safe!
by Sandra (4 out of 5 stars)

I like this, it seems very secure. I had a difficult time finding the tether bar (it is not the anchor) in my 2005 gmc envoy. I almost have up because I thought maybe my suv didn't have it, after a lot of looking, etc I did find it. I am going to add pics to explain where it is incase others need to understand. The product is nice, strong quality except for the plastic part near the end, my dog chewed that off within a week but, I doesn't hinder leash. I've used the buckle type only to have my dog step on the release, I like that I do not need to worry about that happening with this product. I also feel that if there were an accident my dog would not go flying. I often stop short and now I know my dog is safe! I deducted a star because of the plastic part that got chewed up and also because of the difficulty with finding the installation location. It was not explained easily for me and that's also why I am including info to help others.

It isn't perfect, but it still earns five stars ...
by USbookworm (5 out of 5 stars)

This is my first experience with a dog restraint, so my basis for comparison is limited to the research I performed before choosing this one. Aside from its positive reviews, my choice was made in large part due to its material strength and mode of connection ... I wasn't disappointed.

The restraint is very well constructed, and the price is ultra reasonable for such high quality components. One of the two I purchased, however, did not escape superficial damage by my three-month-old, chew-happy puppy, as the rubber coverings located at each end of the tether are torn to expose the metal underneath; still, the function of the tether is intact.

Other restraints secure the dog to the car via the seat belt mechanism ... this one anchors the dog via the metal latches built into the car frame which are deeply embedded and accessed between the rear of the car's seat and lumbar cushions. Since a seat belt can accidentally become unhooked or dislodged, the latch connection is much more heavy-duty and secure. Release or restraint of the dog during travel then is as simple as unhooking or hooking the harness-end of the restraint from or to the dog's harness ... the latch-end of the tether remains hooked to the car.

Both dogs for which these were purchased are less than 20 lb; therefore I ordered Small. However, the dogs are slightly long in body, so I wish that I had ordered at least one with a 21" length. The larger of the two dogs can barely move with the 16" restraint, and she cannot lie down (keep in mind ... some of the tether length is lost behind the seat). The smaller of the two dogs, which happens to be the chew-happy puppy, at least for now is best with the 16" restraint since a longer length would likely destabilize her by allowing her to extend beyond the front edge of the car seat.

Finally ... a product is only as good as the people behind it ... and Leashboss' customer service is top-notch. They are prompt, courteous, and stand by their product guarantee. I'd love to see an updated version with true chew-proof entities from top to bottom, but this restraint is close. I'm very pleased with my purchase, I highly recommend Leashboss, and I wouldn't hesitate to order again.

Chew proof, strong, well made, amazing customer svc!
by Kari Jo,Top Contributor: Pets (4 out of 5 stars)

Bought two. Completely resisted any nibbling from my Belgian Malinois and German Shepherds as we drove across the country. Very durable cables, strong, easy to use (note: never attach restraints to your dog's collar, always use a harness designed for car restraint; never allow your dog to sit in the front seat). The 21" length was the perfect length to attach their K9 harnesses to the rings in the back of my Ford Escape. For some reason after 3 months and the clip that attaches to the car broke on one. The little thin metal piece (tongue?) popped out of the clip. About a month or 2 later, the same metal clip on the second one popped out too. Not sure if I got a funky batch, because nobody else has had this issue, or if the flat shape of the rings in my SUV caused the problem (the rings on the dog harness have a rounded edge, the rings on the car have a flat/squared edge - maybe caused the tongue to get stuck and pop out?), but the customer service was amazing!

I emailed them and right away they sent me 2 replacements - we went with the longer length of 26" to see if that makes any difference. Overall the clips are great, though. I absolutely recommend these over other chewable options.

must have for car rides!
by trevor (5 out of 5 stars)

I am so happy that I found this item! it works so well! We have 2 dogs: a 75 lb staffy and a 50 lb hound mix. I have a large suv and they are constantly running around in the back trying to get over the seats to me, so I would have to keep my arm up the whole car ride. by purchasing these restraints I no longer have to worry about the jumping around or having to keep them from the drivers seat. I ordered the xl 31 inch rope for both dogs. if I lay my back seats down and clip them in their heads just barely come up to the front seats. unless you have a silly pup like our staffy who decided that's okay, I will keep my head between the seats and shove my butt through the opening and pretend im sitting in the front HAHA. because I plan to keep my seats down for them I do wish I would have gotten the next size down, but if you are planning to keep your sits in the upright position and have the rope go through where the seatbelt is, I would def get this size so its not choking the dog. love this product! ive read a lot of reviews on leashboss as well and they seem to have all around great products, so I look forward to shopping with them again!

Perfect for all sizes
by TechCraver (5 out of 5 stars)

The size is hard to gauge because all cars vary. You must use a harness with this product to avoid possible choking. Mine clips to the top of the back seat and my dog can sit and lay down (just barely enough length). I would measure how much you need and where you are going to latch it before purchasing. Quality is great and has a nice hard coating to protect both the cable and car.

Not crash tested
by Jane D. (5 out of 5 stars)
July 18, 2018

I purchased the x-large/31" for my 60 lb dog who ate my nylon restraint. This product does its job re: prevents nibbling but... I've owned dogs for 30+ years & only recently started to get more safety conscious. When looking for products I found the Pet Safety Council's page & there, to my shock and horror, watched product after product fail on test dummies. I then had a long conversation w/the founder of the council - a 1 woman show - & gleaned even more info. To my dismay, and once again, shock - there are no governmental/manufacturing standards for car pet safety as there are for child seats. The woman, bless her heart, has been fighting the battle that we all should be fighting - but to no avail -and it's been years(!) She has partnered with Suburu at this writing, but has struggled getting funding for the very expensive testing. Manufacturers lie w/claim that they are "safety testing" or "crash testing." To develop a product, including testing, it is too expensive for manufacturers. The founder of the Pet Safety Council received various negative responses when seeking interest in vehicle safety standards. Seems to be that no one is interested in funding because it isn't for "people." But, of course, pet safety in the vehicle IS people safety - a dog flying around in a crash is like a missile. Dogs can and do fly out of windows - causing potential harm to other motorists in addition to the vehicle's occupants. Of course we pet owners worry as well about our pets' safety, but if we are going to make the argument for improved vehicle pet safety it looks like we have to make the argument from the potential human risk. Center for Pet Safety dot org is the website for more info. I hope that we owners can band together and make changes in manufacturing for our fur babies and families.
