size chart
by Sheltie Lover (4 out of 5 stars)

It does not mention sizes in the description. So I guessed on a size. I ordered smalls which luckily fit my two shelties. Their neck sizes are 11" and 13". The size chart it came with says: petite (5"-8") small (8"-12") medium (10"-16") large (14"-20"). I'm just glad I ordered a small. Mediums would have been way too big. So when ordering order a size smaller than what the chart says. Hope that helps. :)

Beware of sizing!
by Secondhand Limbs (3 out of 5 stars)

There is WAY too much confusion about sizing on this item. Hopefully this helps!

I bought my 40 lb AmStaff/Heeler mix a medium based on other reviews, which is too large. Here's the issue- the sizes the manufacturer gives don't include the extra length of the tension band! The tag that came with it gives these lengths: Petite 7-9", Small 9-11", Medium 11-15", Large 13-20". All wrong! The tension band on the medium adds another 3.5" when relaxed.

My dog measures 13.5" directly behind her ears where a martingale is designed to sit, but even at the smallest size the collar will adjust to it's still 15.5" when there's no tension. This makes it large enough to slip off her head, or slide down to the base of her neck where tension correction chokes your dog. It also means you have to keep moving the collar to the correct position. Not safe!

Martingales are designed to sit high and only use tension for quick corrections, otherwise you can injure or kill your dog. The reviews that say these collars can kill are right, but it's because they were being used irresponsibly; when ONLY used for walks and other leash training exercises- and fit properly- they're very safe and effective. They aren't meant to be worn without supervision! CAN I STRESS THAT ENOUGH?

For the annoyance and lack of safety and sizing info on here this gets a lower rating, but the product is great, if you have the right size. My dog has her regular collar for tags and knows this collar is all business.

When life hands you lemons, and 16 wheelers get this.
by Katrina (5 out of 5 stars)

My crazy dog is the love of my life, only problem is she loves squirrels, hates public buses, and large trucks especially 16 wheelers. Unfortunately for me , she's a very strong 62 pound German Shepard/lab/pitbull hybrid. When any of these things come nearby she will pull and pull. We have even had various incidences including her leash popping right off from her tugging, and she's a part-time escape artist from any harness or normal collar.

This collar saves my arms, and her life. After she ran into a busy intersection running from a 16 wheeler and scared me to death, I knew something had to change. I found this collar. My life and hers has become so much easier. She's still tries to pull and the collar GENTLY tightens and she relaxes. I can finally run with her without any worries. Squirrels don't stand a chance.

My only wish is if it were a little thicker, for her anxiety. Going on three months and still no problems.

Sizing:

She's a medium size dog, 59-62 pounds. A medium works just fine for her.

Buy a size down
by Rott boy (5 out of 5 stars)

Our Goldendoodle measures 11" and at 5 months got the medium size which the sizing chart says its to be good for 10" - 16". IT'S TOO BIG!!! Thank goodness she'll grow bigger and this should fit properly in the coming months.

Ordered a SMALL which should fit and perform it's job correctly.

Would have given 5 stars if the size was right from the onset. Would rather use this martingale collar for this gentler breed. Our Rottweilers use choke chains (Made in Germany). Should've followed the advise of the other reviews that recommended to buy one size smaller. At "full pull" this size collar compresses to just a regular collar with still enough clearance for two fingers.

With other future dogs to enter our household, no problem having different collar stock for future use. The positives are: strong plastic snap that most martingales don't have, quality vinyl straps, thick chromed metal rings. Will do another review once the Small arrives.

Update:

The Small arrived and fits snuggly with enough leeway to last for our dog's neck to grow another inch. Am so pleased, now that it's the right size, we ordered a second in purple to expand her wardrobe!!!

UPDATE: The Small size arrived and the collar works as it should. With our standard sized Goldendoodle approaching 6 months old, this collar should be good til she's a year old, then the originally ordered Medium, should them be as effective. First pic is Medium, Second is Small wherein at "full pull" compression is felt with no space for any fingers. Wife wishes they would make a small in 1" as she finds the wider collar makes her dog cuter! I'm happy enough with the 3/4". Will look to get purple color for Xmas with a matching leash. Am getting a kick of giving the wife her doggie surprises. For the same amount of happiness she gets, it's way cheaper on my pocket than a handbag, clothes or shoes!!!!

Great martingale, LOVE the quick release feature!
by Belinda. (5 out of 5 stars)
January 15, 2017

The first time my dog slipped his collar on the 3rd day after we rescuedo him, we went immediately to a martingale as I was not about to risk his life and couldnt live with myself if I allowed something to happen to him. This is the one we picked up at a local big box pet store specifically because of the quick release feature. That was over 3.5 yrs ago. I had grabbed a "just in case" extra at this great price about 2 months ago. I'm glad I did as one side of the plastic clip broke off last night. Mind you...that is after nearly 4 yrs of constant use....several times daily. Our family is SO pleased with this product, hoping the replacement is just as trusty as the first one! (PS: do NOT use this product as a regular collar. Martingales are NOT meant for that. The martingale stays attached to the leash at all times, all pertinent doggie ID is attached to a separate, regular collar that our dog is always wearing. When used properly, this martingale is fantastic!

Good collar - SIZING CHART IS OFF
by anywhere but here (4 out of 5 stars)
April 23, 2019

I love Martingale collars, and have purchased several over the years. Material wise this is a solid and affordable collar, but to echo other reviews, the size chart is quite misleading. I purchased a large for my 55 lb pitbull mix. His neck is about 16.5 inches, and the large is definitely too big. In the photo the collar is adjusted to it's smallest possible circumference, and I have my finger very loosely hooked underneath. Fortunately, I have another larger dog who can make use of it, otherwise I would have returned it. One feature of a martingale is that a dog is unable to back up out of the collar. I can't walk him with this collar because i think he just might be able to. I took off one star because an inaccurate size chart results in having to return and/or exchange an item purchased online for the express purpose of saving time. It's also not as though his neck size is on the cusp between a medium and large. According to the chart he's a large.

Larger than specs indicate
by John Folk (3 out of 5 stars)

Well constructed. Would be a five star except that it is larger than described , so large that the part that draws closed when they pull on the lead hung down and my dog got his paw caught in it. Tightest position is supposed to be 13". The one I received was a little over 15 in the tightest position.

Thumbs up for the quick snap!
by BrieCam (5 out of 5 stars)

The quick snap makes all the difference! Our pup came to us with a martingale sans quick snap, and it was a pain - especially when he was so squirmy! It also has a small plastic loop for attaching a tag - a subtle but appreciated touch.

Note: In natural light, the red color appears pinker than you'd expect. If you see this in stores, the florescent lighting makes the red appear darker than it is. Still a cute color for our almost 4 month old, 22 lb rescue! He wears the small, 3/4 in collar.

Great collar for a puller
by Heather (5 out of 5 stars)
January 26, 2016

This collar works well for my 6 month old Boston. I'm trying to train him not to pull on the leash and he's gotten much better since wearing this collar. It clips on easily and feels very secure. For sizing, I went with Small 3/4 inch.... My pups neck is 12 inches but the length of collar is adjustable so I'd choose size based on what thickness you want. He wears a harness for longer walks but this is perfect for our shorter daily walks.

Beware of the sizing
by Nick (4 out of 5 stars)
April 9, 2015

Ordered a medium who's tag states it's size as 10"-16". Measuring my dog's old collars, they're set at 14-15" and they're fairly snug. This collar had to be adjusted to the smallest size to fit properly, leaving about an inch between the rings when it tightens as the dog pulls. On a smaller dog, the rings would touch, which isn't how a martingale should fit. If you're dog wears a collar between 10-14", consider the small.

That aside, it's a great collar that does what it's supposed to. There aren't many martingales with the buckle and it's a nice feature so you don't have to slide it over their head and adjust it every time. My dog has a slender neck and head and we went to a martingale after a near escape at a very bad time.
