For what "Faster" is, it's a 5-star affair.

"Faster" is the perfect example of how to turn a simple premise and bad script into an extremely entertaining flick, an action flick in this example.

Mr. Johnson does a phenomenal job at being intimidating without saying a word, and bringing a very real sense of emotional gravity and turmoil into his role as "Driver." The plot is so thin that if it where an object you'd have to weigh it in microns. "Driver" gets out of prison and immediately goes on a violence-soaked warpath seeking revenge on the people who killed his brother. Along the way, he is hounded by the police, as well as hunted by a hitman who turned to contract murder because he'd already perfected everything else he sought to do in life and perceives the dynamic nature and adrenaline rush of hunting men down to kill them as all that's left to challenge him on this planet. The men "Driver" is targeting are all of varied personalities and activities. Bouncers, pedophiles, dealers, insurance brokers, and even a preacher. The characters are all sufficiently alive with personality, no matter how short their tenure in the film is. Billy Bob Thornton blends into this fast-paced murder ride seamlessly as the grizzled detective with a drug problem and possibly some serious skeletons in his closet.

The snub-nosed Ruger Alaskan that "Driver" uses is the perfect "no-nonsense" weapon for his character, while the Chevelle practically personifies the powerful driving force behind our protagonist's crusade for vengeance. The cinematography is fantastic for a movie that wreaks of midling budget issues, and the actors are all perfect for their roles.

This is one of those movies, if there was any hair out of place in this wig, it wouldn't be fit for a pig. However, everything is perfectly in order, and as such, it makes it extremely entertaining for what it is. I've watched it many times, never shut it off after I put it on.

No, it's not a deep, introspective movie, or an emotionally eviscerating drama about the holocaust, no you're not going to have your humanity or intellect checked anywhere along the ride. It's not the same kind of 5-star movie heavyweight piece of thematic art are, it is however a perfect, succinct, action and revenge movie.

Not a deep move, just a good revenge movie

It was entertaining. This is not a deep movie that makes you want to understand the characters and the motivations even more. It's kind of like "Kill Bill" - but without all the fun and whimsy (to go along with all that blood and killing).

Pure revenge movie, lots of interesting action - good stuff built on guns, cars, and "justice". The movie has many, many flaws - don't look for them, just immerse yourself in a crazy ride. The storyline itself gets distracted by a couple of things:
1/ The movie tries to take itself a little too seriously by sharing things about characters that could make an interesting sub-plot ... but these tangents actually go nowhere. For example, at one point we see Dwayne Johnson's former lover. There really wasn't much point to that....
2/ The story gradually unfolds, sharing bits and pieces at a time. Again, it's a bit like Kill Bill, where we basically pick up on the action right away, then the movie starts to fill in the blanks, relying on flashbacks, for instance. Same thing here. For the most part, it works well - my only issue is that it goes a bit too far in trying to build some drama with a bit of a twist. It was a nice tough - but perhaps a tad overused in this action movie.

None of those are deal-killers. It's worth watching when you just want to see a revenge movie with interesting characters, cars, and guns. And not have to think too much.

Pleasant surprise

It has Dwayne Johnson's best match of a role besides the Fast and Furious films. The plot was a surprise ,his best one yet. Usually majority of action films have exaggerated parts in the plot that despite entertaining once the film concludes we realize it was highly unlikely this would happen once your entertained part of the brain starts shunting to the fully intellectual reflective part. This was the unexpected magic of this film at the end it was involving,believable, and the plot carried through from the beginning without the common explosions or computer effects. The editing was superb giving the necessary amount of information to bring in multiple character development and retrospections. Acting was excellent and contrary to the majority of the masses who believe acting is strictly measured through the capacity of the actors amount of spoken lines i tell them rent the Artist who would have thought a silent movie would have made it in this era. It is about facial expressions and body language about connecting with the audience. It is about reality of life where in many instances you will see both good and evil in most everyone and at the end it is the amount and or severity that makes us judge wether the end or the means are justifiable. This movie brings this dilemma with several of its characters and these are the movies we find questioning ourselves who we truly believe should succeed.

Give it a buy!

Such an amazing piece done by Dwayne Johnson and never heard a single person i know talk about it, such a shame! I've seen some films most actors star in at the beginning of their careers, most films actors star in when they're at rock bottom looking for a quick buck just because, but i can assure you this is Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson acting at his best; furious, driven, and pure momentum coming from his performance, Every time the movie cut back to him it was like an intermission i was waiting for to end so badly because his parts in the movie compared to the other actors meant sh*t was ABOUT-TO-GO-DOWN, and you wouldn't want to blink and miss it. You might not see this movie in most stores at all, and its just $5 for DVD or $7.50 for BluRay right now (my purchase around March 2016), it's worth the purchase if you had plans to watch an action packed film .

I loved this movie. Strong cast members skilled and well appreciated: Carla Gugino, Dwayne Johnson Bill Bob Thornton, Oliver Jackson-Cohen and Maggie Grace to start with. Good Director and Crew. I was sucked into the story right away. Dwayne Johnson did a great job. Carla Gugino and Dwayne Johnson have great on screen chemistry. No matter what the relationship between characters they bring it and deliver..... Carla is a supreme actor no matter the type of character her performances are steller and memorable. This movie was worth the watch for me. Kept me on my toes for sure.

How the Rock got his groove back

Ten years behind bars, and he's so antsy. You see the Rock's character - anonymously labeled "Driver" - as he restlessly paces in his prison cell, waiting out his last morning in stir, and you know something festers on his mind. Any musings as to whether he's truly been rehabilitated is put to rest when he erupts out the penitentiary and straight away visits an office and guns down a telemarketer. That's cold-blooded. That's one name off his list (yes, there is a list).

It's good to see the Rock straying from those sappy family friendly Disney flicks. Good to see him return to his roots and bolstering his action hero street creds. FASTER works off the conventions of a B-movie revenge thriller, and good performances from Dwayne Johnson and Billy Bob Thornton elevate this thing. There are moments of pure cool cinema, like that point of view perspective from the other side of the car's speedometer which allows us a peek out at the seething face of the Rock. I don't think I've seen a revenge thriller this lean and raw and entertaining since Mel Gibson's PAYBACK more than a decade ago.

FASTER is told mainly from three perspectives: the Driver, the Killer, and the drug junkie Cop, with the latter two trying to catch up to the Driver as he continues to eliminate those what done him wrong, those what murdered his brother. Just about every character here is one-dimensional, but Johnson manages to lend nuance to his laconic role. Billy Bob Thornton, as he usually does, adds a little somethin' somethin' to his scruffy, 10-days-to-retirement police detective.

One peculiar choice is the film's decision to devote so much camera time and back story to Oliver Jackson-Cohen's elegant contract hit man. He sees in Driver that one challenge he's been looking for, the one guy who may be faster than he is and that gets his competitive juices flowing. But, frankly, ultimately, I didn't think this hit man was all that interesting. He's what passes for shallow glitter. I did get a laugh though that Jackson-Cohen's biggest peeve there at the end seems to be that he's just not getting the professional courtesy he feels he deserves from the Rock. Jackson-Cohen certainly adds an element of quirk, and it doesn't hurt that his personal arc presents the stunning Maggie Grace as eye candy. Grace, Carla Gugino, and Moon Bloodgood somewhat take the edge off the testosterone level, never mind that Gugino herself plays a tough cop detective.

Dwayne Johnson strides across the screen as a simmering, single-minded force of nature. He relentlessly drives the film, ratcheting up the pace of the story, and maybe it's a good thing after all that Jackson-Cohen's posh assassin gets his moments because this allows the viewing audience to breathe a bit. I did feel that the film backed away a bit from completely portraying Driver as the hard-bitten ex-convict out for vengeance come hell or high water. That one drawn out sequence with Driver and the pastor sort of killed the buzz. Dang that Bible-thumping. Still, FASTER satisfies your jonesing for taut, hard-core anti-hero revenge flicks. And, look at that, the Rock's suddenly got his swagger back. At least until he stars in TOOTH FAIRY 2 or something.

The DVD's extras ain't much: an Alternate Ending (which was the original ending) and 5 Deleted Scenes with optional Director's introductions (except for the "Killer Takes A Picture" scene).

THE ROCK, GREAT AS EVER.

I only looked at this movies because of 'THE ROCK'. I LOVE this man's acting and he is soooooo fine.

I don't like prison pictures, but it was a short view of that, and it went to the real action.

I had never heard of this movie or seen it before, but I sure love that Amazon had it on the Black (AA) movie list that I searched. I've seen so many I never heard of and have a list of more movies to see.

The Rock was fierce in this movie, and he did not care who saw him killing all the people that 'killed his brother'. That was his focus when he got out of jail from a setup by friends, for 10 yrs. He got them back and he had no mercy. I don't like violence in movies but this was well played and I loved it.

Saw it for $.99 cents. Can you believe that. Bye, bye Comcast. Hello Amazon. I'm a fan for life, just keep the good movies coming. I love the rental.

You will not be disappointed in renting or buying this movie. Guys you will really love this...it's all manly and macho for you. LOL

Buy, rent. Just see it. You will not be disappointed. Tell others about it so they can see this movie also on Amazon. No I'm not getting paid to advertise Amazon. When a good thing comes along, I like to pass it on, share. DON'T YOU?

A revelation of sorts

Pretentiousness is something I absolutely can't stand in movies. For me, pretentious films, like Never Let Me Go, Sucker Punch, or Meek's Cutoff are much, much harder to sit through than bottom-of-the-barrel BS like Bucky Larson: Born To Be A Star, The Roommate, or Vampires Suck. Why? While the BS makes you feel sorry for yourself for ever having sat through it, pretentious flicks just make you mad, because their overinflated egos are right in your face.

So, where am I going with this?

Because, in the movie-going world, Faster is a revelation of sorts. It is gracefully not BS and thankfully not pretentious.

Now, that's not to say it is awards material (although I'd argue the Cinematography is), but in a cinema plagued with trash, Faster is the kind of film you're glad to see because it knows what it is, knows what it isn't, and just tries to make the most out of its B-movie story.

Yeah, this is a B-movie. You're not going to stare at the screen and 90 minutes later learn something profound about Humanity's place in the universe. This ain't that kind of movie. From the first shot of The Rock's built up pecs, you're going to see a man's kind of movie with guns, chases, and blood with a neat little throwback to Film Noir and the revenge flicks of the 1970s in between. It is all style and practically no substance.

This is the kind of movie you either like or you don't, and there isn't much more to say than that. If what you want in a movie is something the Oscars would fawn all over, this ain't really for you unless you appreciate Cinematography most in a movie. If what you want in a movie is something modest, this is one great way to spend an afternoon.

Now, regarding the Blu Ray, the manufacturers did a hell of a job here. The picture is pristine, with a fine layer of grain (the film was shot on 35mm). Colors and Shadows are dead on, with no digital noise and no weird-ass DNR. The sound is a kick to the woofers, with dialogue perfectly audible and sound effects perfectly triumphant and full of oomph!. A bang-up presentation. Regarding Special Features, the main mini-docs on the cast and crew and cars are practically promos, so they're skippable. What you want to see is the deleted scenes. While they're not merely filler or beats that are take-it-or-leave-it like most deleted scenes, these scenes are so terrible you have to see them to believe them (the alternate ending in particular).

However, I must put out something of particular note. While I can't say this is a film I love, it is one I like, and a movie I've managed to have seen more than 10 times. The Blu Ray I received is different than the DVD, almost like a different, more rougher cut of the film. A hymn plays during the opening music number where once there was none. The guards now have dialogue when they didn't before and the prisoners now are audibly clear, where once they were but intimidating and muffled growls and shouts behind glass. Some of the cuts seem more stilted, with the music cues being almost out of place. With the Private Investigator, there are different shots used. This is all within the first 20 minutes. While I didn't see the movie in theaters, this is something I couldn't help but notice in comparison to how I've typically seen the movie before on a DVD. A great presentation still, but one I couldn't help but notice the differences with.

I love this movie.

This is a fantastic throwback (modern) 70's flick. This means fairly violent, decent action, very little nuance in the plot, and very little dialogue (only to move the story forward). For the most part there are no surprises because characters act the way you'd suspect they would act; also there is no real "good guy" in this movie.

It's a great movie if you're into these kinds of movies and can deal with a modern "gloss" (as in it looks (is filmed) better than 70's movies of the same genre). This isn't art it's a popcorn flick. There are lots of these types of movies being made currently (most of which are awful) however, this is great because it maintains the spirit of the genre.

Action With Depth and Heart!

Great action flick with a lot of heart. Well scripted and brilliantly executed. Everything fits together remarkably well in spite of the 'loose ground' that is the action-genre. The easiest films to screw up are all action or suspense films. 'Faster' fits together pretty well.
