Short chain fatty acids (SCFAs) acetate, propionate, and butyrate are the end products of anaerobic bacteria break down of carbohydrates in the colon. They may be paying us back, like rent, for providing them with a secure haven in the colon by producing butyrate. The process is basically fermentation and is an important function of the large bowel. Butyrate is manufactured by many of the normal microflora out of fully digested vegetable fiber and appears to be the number one fuel for the cells that line the colon.
