Product Description
This set contains some of the hottest JATP sessions from 1944 through 1953, and the sound is more than adequate. Consider the cost vs. what you get (over nine hours of great music) and you will see why I tagged this as an amazing deal. Here is what's on the discs in the set (I am not going to include the track list, but if you have a specific question ask it in comments and I will respond): Disc 1: 1944. features J.J. Johnson and is from 1944. It also contains some excellent playing by Nat King Cole who went under the pseudonym of Shorty Nadine for contractual reasons. Time 52:34. Disc 2: First three tracks 1944, next three 1945 and the remaining two 1946. Features Shorty Sherlock and Dizzy Gillespie. Time 52:35. Disc 3: 1946. Features Dizzy Gillespie, Al Killan and Buck Clayton. Time 63:06. Disc 4: 1946. Features Buck Clayton. Time 71:36. Disc 5: First five tracks 1946, remaining seven 1947. Feature Billie Holiday. Time 65:17. Disc 6: 1948. Features Roy Eldridge. Time 46.25. Disc 7: 1950. Features Harry "Sweets" Edison and Charlie Parker. Time 53:00. Disc 8: First four tracks 1950, remaining three 1952. Features Oscar Peterson and Coleman Hawkins. Time 56.42. Disc 9: 1952. Features Oscar Peterson and Gene Krupa. Time 60:53. Disc 10: 1953. Features Roy Eldridge. Time 56:40. Interestingly any 1949 and 1951 JATP performances are missing from this set. I will say that the last disc contains one of my favorite tracks: a 25:36 long performance of Cool Blues that was performed at Carnegie Hall with Roy Eldridge and Charlie Shavers on trumpet, Ben Webster and Flip Phillips on tenor saxophone, Willie Smith and Benny Carter on alto saxophone, Bill Harris on trombone, and a great rhythm section comprised of J. C. Heard on drums, Ray Brown on bass, Herb Ellis on guitar, and Oscar Peterson on piano.
