Drop in quality for extra small size. Small size is still okay.

This review is for the extra small size only.

I have been buying this balls for almost 2 years and recently started to notice a change in the quality, which is so sad since these are one of my dog's favorite toys! Everything was great until about 6 months ago. The balls now arrive with a very strong plastic smell, which was not present before. Also, now my dog can break open the ball much faster. He can easily get through it in a week, whereas before it would take him several weeks to destroy it. At first I thought I may have just received a bad batch, so I kept ordering them. After a few more orders came with the horrible smell and weaker quality, I stopped and switched to the small size. The small size appears to be of the same quality as I original had. No funny smell and my dog doesn't immediately break in and get the squeaker. It's too bad since I prefer the extra small size, but at least there are no problems to date with the small size and my dog still can have one of his favorite toys - although a little bigger.

For reference, my dog is 13lbs Jack Russell/Chihuahua/Mutt mix. He has pretty baby teeth and a small mouth. He is not much of a chewer, but loves to squeak all day long. The small size is not too big for his mouth, although the extra small size is better.

My dog doesn't like them, but my cat loves them!

I know these are meant for dogs, but my dog doesn't like tennis balls. I bought these for my cat, who loves them. They're the perfect size for him. He drops them down the basement stairs, racing after them, hunting for them when they bounce in a direction he wasn't expecting, and then brings them back upstairs to start the process over. It keeps him entertained for hours... My only complaint would be he does this after we've gone to bed, and he's quite noisy. But that's not a reflection of these balls at all!

Perfect toy for dogs! My dog's favorite toy!

I have a 9 going on 10 month old, 100 lb German Shepherd. Very active and in shape, huge puppy. He would normally DESTROY a tennis ball within a few hours to a day with his constant chewing and playing with the ball. I considered this and decided to buy it. I bought the Medium size because I still wanted him to be able to chew it. The large size is definitely big (I went to petsmart to check out the sizes but purchased here, price is waaay better!). I tested which size he'd like and he played with the Medium size more since he was able to chew it. He can't choke on it since its not too small for him. He's been playing with it for a few months now and its still intact. Less bouncy than when we first got it, still bouncy of course, but he is a huge puppy and chews on it ALOT. It is the only toy he has not gotten tired of! I also gave the same size ball to my boyfriend's new dog (Husky 2 months old) and he loves it chews on it as well and it squeaks the same way as with my GSD. For our dogs, its the perfect option and the Medium is the perfect sizing. Its a little smaller than a traditional tennis ball, but the closest size out of all the other size of the Kong Squeakier Balls.

Don't Buy These

Again, another failed ball. I'm not sure if it is the tennis ball material, but my dogs have successfully destroyed all 3 of them in 24 hours. There is little green pieces of material all over my house and probably ingested by my dogs. The interior ball stayed intact but they are removing all the green fur. These are going to the garbage. Waste of money.

Dachshund Approved.

People complain that the Kong balls can be torn apart, but with our dog that is part of the process. First, she "kills" the squeaker after she feels she's broken her new ball in enough. Then, she slowly defuzzes the ball. Eventually, it is bald. When she feels it is time to retire it, she takes it apart. Between the fetching and the ball deconstruction, these toys keep her busy-- and they are definitely her favorite type of ball. She has a little dragon horde of Kong balls in her bed.

Nasty, terrible smell! Don't buy!

Don't waste your money. They are inexpensive balls, but that's not the point. They gave me a splitting headache when they arrived. They have mothball like odor that won't go away. I aired them for two weeks, I washed and scrubbed them, but the smell is still there. If you can give your dog mothballs to eat, go ahead and let him/her play with them. I wouldn't think of letting my baby play with these balls. They may kill him, like many made-in-China kids toys or dog foods did. Awful, awful smell!!

Quality vs. Durability divided by Price = ?
by Waker (4 out of 5 stars)

We thought these were the same ones we usually get (the 5 pack) from Target; with the red card & Cartwheel, the deals have been best compared to local pet stores. However these are more like the "Outlet" store version.

Pros:

More durable felt--out dogs can usually "skin" the Target version within a few hours of dedicated chewing even with a good amount of missing teeth at their senior ages.

Stiffer rubber--If you've got a strong jawed beasty, these ought to last a good long while.

Stronger squeaker retention--The Target version's squeaker is usually dislodged in the same amount of time as the felt (few hours of play). Very dangerous for the little ones and requires a keen awareness by the owner.

Cons:

Stiffer rubber-- For my older dogs this is a drawback and if given the choice, they always go for the softer Target version. These also don't squeak or bounce as easily because of the stiffness. Some of the second hands have a pronounced seam that sends them rolling at odd angles.

Poorer Quality Control--We purchased about 36 of these second hand balls and at least 12 of them at unusable for our Poms. We'll donate those to the local shelter for dogs with stronger jaws.

Overall, these were an okay purchase but we are sticking with the Target version despite the squeaker issue. Price is comparable so you'll need to decide which attributes are more appealing for your pooch.

Great for picky pups!
by Samantha (5 out of 5 stars)

Pros:
- Holds my dog's attention like nothing else. She is not interested in regular tennis balls at all but will fetch for HOURS with these balls.
- Squeak is LOUD. Can be heard from pretty far off so they are great for calling my dog back when off leash at a park because they are like puppy crack.
- The medium is a standard tennis ball size which is good for my 55lbs lab
- Come in a multipack because they can get gross (like any tennis ball) at the park

Cons:
- They are stolen 100% of the time at the dog park. My dog isn't the fastest and is quite submissive so if there are other dogs at the park they become fixated on the squeakair ball because it squeaks and inevitably they beat her to it. Since my dog isn't interested in other balls, we usually bring two and the other one is stolen. So we buy a lot of them.
- They don't handle getting wet well. If they are dropped in a water bowl or the lake/ocean/pool or large puddle they don't squeak anymore or if they do it sounds pretty pathetic. They essentially become wet standard tennis balls which aren't as fun.

Great idea, major durability issues
by Adam P.,Top Contributor: Pets (2 out of 5 stars)

Positives: throws great like a regular tennis ball, softer on the teeth for the dogs, fits into the Chuck-It thrower, border collie absolutely loves this (must be a combination of squeaking, texture, smell?)

Negatives: squeaker is intermittent and/or doesn't squeak after just a few chomps by the dogs, all three lasted my border collies only to be destroyed within 10 minutes (of just chewing) by a husky puppy. Once the toy is ruptured you really have to throw it away given the risk of the dog ingesting the interiors (i.e., the squeaker).

The sad part is my border collie loves the squeaker tennis balls and the market for these type of dog toys are mainly monopolized by the KONG brand. I will try MotionPets next to see if I can get an improvement on lifetime of these toys.

Affordable, rugged toys that are great for small dogs like a toy Aussies
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)

These are perfect for little dogs but big dogs could swallow them whole if you are not careful. We have four dogs, all Australian Shepherds. Two of them, our daughter's dogs, are toy Aussies; think 10-11 pounds. One of them really likes to play with toys but it is hard to find rugged ones that are small enough to fit in his mouth. Enter the Kong Squeakair Tennis Balls, known around here as "cheesies." Pudgie plays with his "cheesy" hours on end. One ball will last 6-8 months as long as it doesn't roll under something we can't reach. One of the big dogs will occasionally steal it but loses interest after I get him one of his Hugglehound HuggleHounds Plush Corduroy Durable Knotties Moose Dog Toy, Large toys.

I highly recommend these tennis balls for toy-sized dogs.
