Flawed design, get the superior old C-40 version if you can find it.by R Hernandez (1 out of 5 stars)

This thing is designed all wrong! Yeah, it looks nice, but the plastic sticks out too far from the blade which makes the tape stick to the bottom below the blade when you're trying to cut it! The thing is also too light! It constantly moves when you use it which is annoying. This really defeats the purpose of buying this thing. I actually took off the blade, shaved off some plastic near the bottom and now it works a lot better! Also I cracked this thing open, took the sand out and added some nuts, bolts, and stripped hex wrenches, then I put the sand back in. It's WAY better now! If you can, get the old c-40 version, that one is way superior! That one is designed right and weighed 1lb 9oz. I didn't weigh this new one but I got it up to a comparable 1lb 8oz which fixed the problem. I hate newly designed garbage! Stick to what works!
A must buy!

I had very low expectations when I ordered this $5.99 dispenser - was I ever surprised. The unit is quite well constructed, heavy enough to allow one hand use, and it looks great. It also has a feature that I love, the tape spindle is permanently fixed to the unit. I have an older dispenser with a missing spindle, it simply disappeared, so the old unit is worthless. A replacement spindle is nearly as expensive as this entire unit.
The spindle on this flips up on a hinge, slip the tape on the spindle and return it to the normal position. I highly recommend this dispenser.
Definitely as expected.

I've been using this in my office- and my coworkers steal it often haha Its weighted well enough to sit (somewhat) still when I use one hand to grab tape. The only thing I'd change is being able to 'lock' the dispenser roll into place. I have a standard roll of tape on the dispenser, but when I (often) use one hand to grab some tape, the dispenser roll lifts the way it does when I refill it. I lift the tape and the roll lifts with me, then when I pull to draw more tape, it pulls the entire desktop tape dispenser. Not a big deal, but its not as secure or easy to grab tape as if it could snap the dispenser roll into place.
Poor design

Don't waste your money. This is a poor design. While the dispenser is nice and heavy and also has a slip resistant rubber mat on the bottom, it has a design flaw. The plastic sticks out further than the cutting edge leaving a small portion available to cut the tape. I bought this for ease of use and have found it more difficult to use than the disposable tape from Walmart.
Won't stay in place

I bought this thinking it would help while wrapping Christmas presents by allowing me to cut off the amount of tape needed while using one hand. It would have worked if the dispenser would stay in one place. It has a gripping material on the bottom to keep it from sliding but I had to use one hand to hold the dispenser and one hand to pull and cut the tape. The part that cut the tape is also a pain in the rear. It isn't sharp enough or positioned in the right place to cut the tape with ease. I guess in this case I got what I paid for. Sometimes the price does reflect the quality of the product. I'd had better luck just buying tape that was already in those handheld dispensers. Not a great purchase for me.
Heavyweight- Great Quality

Really nice tape dispenser. Heavyweight and easy to place the tape on it. You simply raise the roll holder and slide on your tape. I just bought a scotch roll of tape for it and it worked fine. I'm sure any brand of tape would work on it. This dispenser doesn't include tape - so make sure you buy some. Looks really nice - highly recommend this product.

Before I took this tape dispenser out of its box that it came in, it was leaking a fine sand. At first I thought it may just be some dust or manufacturing residuals. However, once I removed the dispenser from the box, it sat in a loosely wrapped plastic bag, filled with fine sand. I had to proceed to dump out all of the sand that is used to give the product weight for tearing tape. Long story short, poorly designed and manufactured, may just be a fluke but, definitely dissatisfied, spend your money on another tape dispenser.
Get what you pay for

Does exactly what it's supposed to. My only complaint is it does not cut the tape evenly. Usually its tiny little teeth marks, mine cuts very jagged unless you place one finger top of the cutting blade, then gently tear. Personally I dont mind but if you need for a presentation and the tape to look nice then it could be a problem
Heavy and sharp enough to do the job

I wanted a double roll dispenser like I purchased here 4 years ago since there are jobs for which a re-positionable (aka Magic) tape is better. I settled for this model for my computer desk drawer since I use tape more in the kitchen where I keep my larger, heavier Officemate OIC Recycled 2-In-1 Heavy Duty Tape Dispenser, Black (96690) that holds wider tape for sealing packages along with a narrower tape that's good for attaching return labels.
I looked for a desk model because of my continuing frustration using two older specialty plastic hand-held dispensers with tape that is obviously lighter in weight today than the "Scotch tape" I grew up using. Lighter weight tape is especially frustrating in the winter when static can grab and fold it back on itself. But what is completely "crazy-making" is to have a length meant to tape down the longer side of an Amazon return label twist instead of tearing off cleanly and leaving me with that twisted length, plus a few more inches, stuck to my hand. For that very reason I do not buy "bargain" tape, so it's doubly disappointing when I end up with tape stuck to my fingers.
This dispenser's metal "teeth" keep the tape from twisting and sticking to the wrong target; and its weight is heavy enough to keep it from sliding should I have it on top of my desk instead of down in the drawer with invoices and such. So I feel confident in recommending it. Just be sure to fully press the roll down into the dispenser to keep it from lifting when you begin to tear off tape.
♫ The things, it tapes; It's so Indispensible! ♫

I'll admit, other than when I need to tape up something, I rarely give thought to the design of a tape dispenser. If I do, it is usually because A) the tape won't tear off properly, or B) the dispenser isn't heavy/balanced enough and falls on my foot when I just want to tape a dang letter shut. Oh, and I forgot, the biggest one: when your drop-in roll dispenser somehow comes out along with the ribbon of tape that you wanted!
So, my search began.
I will try to keep this simple because, lets be honest, who wants to read the "Moby Dick" of reviews about a tape dispenser? Thus, the highlights:
* The price. $2.99 for this thing is a steal! I removed one star though; it certainly weighs enough to ship on its own, so I have no idea why this needs to be an add-on item for Amazon to include it with free shipping.
* The base is fairly heavy and has two large, textured rubber pads that cover nearly the entire surface. Thus, between the weight of the dispenser itself, as well as the resistance from the pads, it stays put when you pull a length of tape and tear it off. The added bonus: the padding on the bottom will protect your desk surface and also enable you to use this dispenser on a glass-topped desk/table with no worries.
* Okay folks, this is the coolest part and what makes the Silvertech better than the standard drop-in style desktop dispensers. In order to load the Silvertech, you hook your finger under the spool that holds the tape roll and gently tug upward. This pulls out an entire side panel where you can feed the tape onto the spool, press it back against the plastic panel (kind of like fitting a tire onto its mount within the wheel well of a car), and then push the entire assembly back down into the body of the tape dispenser until your hear it click. The roll of tape is now locked securely within the Silvertech with no possibility of it slipping loose!
Conclusion
While it stunk having to wait until I had $25 worth of items to order, it was definitely worth it. I am currently using 3/4" Scotch Transparency tape and having no issues in regard to the performance of the dispenser. The cutting blade is sharp and the tape dispenses smoothly with no snags. With the weight and rubber guards I have been able to just pull of the tape that I wanted without having to hold the tape dispenser to prevent it from moving (such a wonderful change from what I had), and without the fear of my desktop being scratched.
In the end, if you are looking for an attractive tape dispenser that keeps the tape in the dispenser, is heavy enough to remain in place but has padding to protect your desktop surfaces, can accommodate both 1/2" and 3/4" tape widths, and gets the job done, all while only costing $3? I'd call that one heck of a deal.
