I am horrible at reading dimensions

5 stars - It is a KONG and it does exactly what you would think.

But....

I am horrible at reading dimensions, just like I'm sure 99% of you are. So here is a picture of the small KONG for puppies. (If you have a larger puppy, do NOT get the small, he will choke on it). I have attached pictures with a regular sized gift card for comparison.

Great durable puppy toy but I wish that you were able to choose the color. Also, I included a picture of the kong guide from their website because it gives more detailed information about what size is right for your breed, size and age of your dog. This guide was included with my purchase but not on the amazon page (a lesser guide was shown on amazon). If I was able to see this prior to making my original purchase, I would have gotten a larger size.

Watch out to see that your dog's jaw doesn't get stuck in it!
by jjmcubed (3 out of 5 stars)

Have used KONG products for years with no problem. We purchased a Puppy KONG for our new rescue. She was approx six months old when we gave it to her. Everything was fine for the first couple of times she played with it. We packed it with treats, and she would enjoy it for twenty to forty-five minutes. After about two weeks of having her, and a week after we first gave it to her, the KONG got stuck on her bottom jaw. It took 30 minutes of me chasing her around the house, calming her down, then cutting the KONG off since it wouldn't budge. I would be able to cut for 30 seconds, then she would run off scared out of her mind thinking I was trying to kill her. Not sure what I would have done if I didn't have really sharp, short curved hobby scissors. I couldn't tell if she was hurt as she was crying/screaming, I would approach her calmly, then I would be able to cut another half inch of the KONG off. Thankfully I was able to get it off after multiple tries. She wasn't hurt, but she didn't trust me for a couple weeks after this happened. Be careful that this isn't too large for your dog. Our girl is approx 35 lbs, but she does have a narrow face.

Also, be careful of any balls/toys that only have one hole. Dogs can get their tongue stuck in the ball, and it can create a suction effect that doesn't allow the dog to get their tongue out. KONG did have one product that caused this(a ball on a rope) called KONG Beast TUG-CHEW-FETCH that I no longer see on their website.

This review isn't to blame KONG for what happened. This is to warn others about dangers of these types of toys. Please make sure your dog can NOT get their jaw into the KONG.

Amazing!

Our 17-week old puppy has never loved a toy so much! We adopted her from the Humane Society at 8-weeks old and her teething/mouthiness (biting our hands, clothing and feet) was a nightmare. I should have caved in and bought this KONG toy then instead of waiting until now.

The pics show a good estimate of the size of the toy--I purchased the medium puppy toy size. Our pup's breed is Catahoula Leopard Dog mix--according to the Humane Society wherewe adopted her. She should grow to about 40lbs. At her age now, (a little over 4 months old) the medium puppy size is perfect.

Overall, it's a great product! I only wish I could have requested a color preference.

Thank god for Kong toys! Really, nothing else needs to be said, but I will in case there are other clueless puppy parents like me. My little one is a Maltese and was 7.5 wks and 1.5 lb when I started using the puppy Kong in the extra-small size and he did great with it. He's tiny so he's pretty easy to handle, but every now and then he gets the puppy "crazies": zooming around, unable to focus because he's so excited, playing too hard and unruly...and he's smart: puppies are like sponges so it's important to teach good habits. I'm currently using the Kongs to help calm him down. I fill it with the softened kibble we're transitioning him over to (and eventually to dry kibble) and place him in his kennel with a Kong. It forces him to calm down as he focuses on getting all the kibble out (sometimes he gets it all, sometimes he doesn't...and sometimes, he squeaks a little bit if he can't get everything, but he keeps at it!). In about 15 min, I have a calm puppy that's ready for the next activity or for sleep. I do plan on keeping Kongs in my arsenal for his lifetime--there are so many methods and fillers (easy internet search to find options). I know he's a prissy breed, but prissy breeds need to learn settle down and be able to have focused, independent play just as much as more robust breeds, so I'm thankful to have some Kongs to help him do that.

Greatest dog toy of all time
by Kim,Top Contributor: Pets (5 out of 5 stars)

The puppy Kong and classic Kong are the greatest dog toys of all time. If you don't have one, I don't know how you survive the puppy days! I have 8 of the various Kong toys in my freezer and give one to my puppy every time I leave the house or need a moment's peace. You can use them as snacks or feed all of their meals in them. There are YouTube videos and online instructions with endless possibilities for filling these. If you are in a hurry, plug the small end with peanut butter, fill it with kibble, add a little water or broth, then plug the big end with peanut butter and freeze it! It will keep your puppy busy for 30 minutes. I like to use chicken and canned 100% pumpkin for a lower calorie treat. Oatmeal, mashed sweet potatoes, lean beef, carrots, bananas, strawberries, anything that is safe for dogs to eat will work. If you don't have time to freeze it, just put a few treats in and let the puppy work on that. It's one of the only toys I will leave with my puppy when I can't supervise her. She even likes to play with it empty. Just a great toy. Every puppy should have at least one!

Dog loves it, but it's smelly; get a Sumo instead
by AMG (3 out of 5 stars)
January 28, 2017

My dog loves his kong toy, especially when I stuff it with cheddar cheese and freeze it. I've been giving it to him as a special treat for when I'm going out (he doesn't like to be home alone!).

I received a blue kong, but note that you cannot choose the color. I'm a woman with a male dog and I've often debated in my mind whether my dog's stuff should match my gender or his. I've come to the following conclusion: I promise you that your dog will not care what color kong you got it. Dogs know little, if anything, of symbolic gender binaries. This is especially the case for dogs that are spayed or neutered. Also, dogs can't see color. If somebody on the street mistakes your dog's masculinity or femininity based on the color kong he/she is holding, your dog will not be traumatized.

Okay now on to the product itself. Here's the reason it only gets 3 stars. It smells. Bad. From day 1. It's hard to describe the smell: I'd say like a combo of sweaty and metallic. If I touch it even with the tips of my fingers I have to use dish soap to get the smell off of my hands.

It's not because it isn't clean. I've tried scrubbing it, soaking it in dish soap, soaking it in hot water with baking soda, soaking it in a vinegar solution. It's gross. But it's worth it, I guess, because my dog doesn't freak out when I leave because he gets his kong. I wonder if others have this problem.

Update: I have since replaced this with a Sumo Sumo Mini XS Soft Rubber Dog Toy by SUMO chew toy, which basically looks and works the same way. It doesn't smell. Get that one instead.

it sounded like air being let out of a balloon

Puppy chewed the top of this kong ball off and swallowed it...it got stuck near her rear and she started farting thru the tiny hole in the top...it sounded like air being let out of a balloon, I WAS VERY WORRIED. But after consulting the vet and giving the dog some laxatives it finally..."popped out" Maybe this was to small of a toy for my Puggle puppy.

KNOCK OFF KONG
by Roksana (1 out of 5 stars)
July 12, 2017

The package came really quick. It was nicely packaged. However, this KONG is not an authentic KONG. It's definitely a knockoff product that smells like chemicals/tires. If you love your animals you would keep this product away from them. I have tried everything to wash the smell off and to no avail. I have read similar reviews, it sucks to know that I'm not the only one that has this issue. I'm going to do myself and my puppy a favor by spending a few extra bucks on a real KONG. You can even feel the difference in the rubber quality , It's quite flimsy and definitely a choking hazard. Not even trying to be dramatic, but it is what it is .
