It works but needs little of your help to work 100%

I've been battling Diatoms (brown algae) for almost a year and was getting extremely frustrated. My plants, substrate, glass, equipment and driftwood was all covered in nasty diatoms. Tap water we get from the city is liquid rock. Extremely high in silicates and phosphates. So I decided to give phosguard a try. I have two of these, one in hob filter and the other in my canister filter. Ever since I added this media I've noticed a huge difference in diatoms. To help phosguard I've added some otocinclus catfish as a clean up crew in both my tanks.

Btw this is not gonna completely remove diatoms. It's just a band aid to prevent the tank having a outburst. There're still quite a bit of diatoms but with the help of my clean up crew and phosguard I can manage. Do keep in mind that regular maintenance and cleaning diatoms from plants with a toothbrush will di finitely help. I do that every week.

Make sure you place the individual packs (yes, they come in nice small 100ml mesh bags) in the filter where you have good water flow. When I do water changes I use one of the phosguard packs with some fiter floss and let the tap water run through it to fill 5 gallon buckets. This helps a whole bunch to pre filter some silicates.

Goodbye Diatoms!

This has saved my tank! I was having SUCH a bad time with brown algae (diatoms) taking over EVERYTHING. After almost giving up on my planted tank, I tried this and everything cleared up. My local water is super high is phosphates apparently. At first I tried following the directions and removing it after 3-4 days, but the algae came back. Now I just leave it in my HOB filter full-time. I tested my water after 1 week of leaving it in there, and again after 2 weeks, and I still have enough phosphates to feed my plants, but not the ridiculously high amount my untreated tap water contains. Basically, it was this or an RO system, and this is WAY cheaper!

Awesome!!!

What an amazing product. I was having a major green algae outbreak in my 55 gal reef tank. I bought 2 of these bags and put them in my HOB filter and 48 hrs later, the green algae was gone. You will have to scrape the algae off the glass but it's dead or dying at that point. Highly recommend.

This stuff really works

This is great stuff! My phosphate level was so far over the top I couldn't take a reading for over three weeks! I change this out every four days, and after another couple of weeks I was actually able to get a reading on the api the phosphate test. It's expensive to buy in the ready to go pouch if you're in the same situation that I was. My last purchase was for the 1 L container and then I've just been measuring it and putting it into a little mesh bag. I will always have this in my tank just to keep my phosphate levels down to zero or almost 0. My plants are doing a lot better because the LG level has gone down

Great filter media but make sure it has good water flow over it
by James Z. (4 out of 5 stars)

This product works as described, and I recommend it to others.

I was having a phosphates problem for a while in my salt water tank at work because some of my macro algae had broken down in a spot I couldn't reach and was decaying there. I also, unbeknownst to me for a while, had an reverse osmosis/de-ionization filter system that wasn't pulling all the phosphates out of my top-off water. Bottom line, I was able to get the problem in better control using PhosGuard. That's good because the excess phosphates were really feeding some hair algae that had sprung up in my tank.

The one thing that you have to note about this product is that it really needs to be in a place where it gets good water circulation over the media. I haven't had much luck in applications where there isn't much flow going directly over the PhosGuard.

Additionally, depending on the prices at the time of purchase, you may be able to save money by buying a bag for the PhosGuard and buying the larger quantities of PhosGuard. Once when I did the math, it was about the same price to just keep buying these 100 mL bags, but the next time I needed some it was cheaper to buy the bag and the larger bottle of PhosGuard. Apparently the price of these fluctuate a bit.

Other than that, I recommend this to others trying to keep phosphates under control.

Works gradually over time which is a good thing

Slow acting but helps you regain control of Phosphte levels. I was seeing levels over 2 on a visual comparison scale. Started applying PhosGuard and quickly realized I needed a better way to measure. So I bought a ppb range ultra low reader and have been using it once my levels went under 200 ppb. After about 6 weeks using two pouches per week, levels have stabilized around 60 ppb without massive water changes. Tank is 125 gal. reef with a 40 gal sump. Perhaps using three pouches might speed things up, but someone once taught me that nothing good happens quickly in a reef tank. The entire process has helped me tweek feeding levels to get a better balance and control.

Works great!

Have been using this for years when I had had a problem with black brush/beard algae and cyanobacteria/blue green algae. This works great and I've been using it ever since. The mesh bag makes this super easy to use. You just drop the pre filled, sealed bag into your filter without the mess of bagging loose product. It is very efficient at removing phosphates from your water and claims not to re-release removed phosphates back into your tank. I use it in a freshwater tank in a small canister filter. One of those things that make life a bit easier!

it seems like the price of this bag fluctuates a lot so ...

This product worked exactly as described. Within the first several hours, my phosphate levels dropped to 0 and I no longer had to worry about my phosphate levels. According to lots of people online as well as the package description, you shouldn't let it sit inside your filter for too long so I only let it sit for about 4 days and removed it afterwards. I believe this bag is also not regeneratable so it's a one time use. Also, it seems like the price of this bag fluctuates a lot so at times, it may be really cheap and other times it may be $9+. That would probably be my only complaint because I just checked and the price has dropped by a couple dollars since the last time I bought it. For that, I would have to dock it one star. But the functionality of the product is 100% and there's no complaints with the product itself.

Diatom Cure
by Meghan Buckley (5 out of 5 stars)

I had a major problem with diatoms in my new freshwater tank that persisted well after cycling had ended. An internet search suggested that silicate was my problem, and that I should get something to filter it out of the water.

I bought PhosGuard, and simply tossed the bag in my filter with the other media. The problem cleared up in a week and hasn't come back. I love Seachem products in general, and would definitely recommend this product to anyone with a diatom problem.

Perfect size for my 47 gallon bow front tank
by DonB368 (5 out of 5 stars)
September 2, 2017

Perfect size for my 47 gallon bow front tank, and convenient to lay in the media tray of my canister filter. I was starting to see small patches of algae, and had my water tested for phosphates (which indicated a low level). After adding PhosGuard, the water is perfectly clear and tests negative for phosphates. I also decrease the number of hours per day my lights are on, and added some Marimo moss balls. All of these actions combined, seems to have eliminated any algae problems I had.
