This is a novel of the men of the 27th Infantry Regiment, the Wolfhounds. It depicts in accurate detail the daily life as a Grunt in Vietnam. The anti war movement was at it's height creating a feeling of abandonment for those left to fight and die in the jungle.These boys did not fight out of a sense of patriotism and in fact, scoffed at the idea of anthems and the flag waving patriots at home. They fought to protect their brothers in arms and would gladly endanger their own lives to ensure the safety of their friends. They truly became brothers in every sense of the word. Race and color had no meaning in combat. They lived and died in the isolation of a primeval jungle so dense that sunlight was a luxury. To the Generals, they fought for body count, a term and strategy developed by rear echelon officers, that dehumanized both the enemy and themselves. They became numbers in an equitation calculated by office bound warriors who never experienced the fear, death, and blood of jungle combat. They fought to perpetuate the lies in daily briefings that measured the success of the war in ratios and statistics.This is a story that relates to every Infantry Grunt who served in Vietnam. It may bring back painful memories but it is a story that should be told. These memories exist today. They haunt us daily. Those that served in Vietnam were the best America had. They served their country and did what was asked of them. They never expected a hero's welcome when they returned but they never expected to be shunned and reviled by the very public they took an oath to protect.
