Product Description
This unit is part of the Contexts for Learning Mathematics series, a k-5 series used primarily in the U.S., but also around the world. It is designed as a grade 2 unit to be used after a prior grade one unit, The Timekeepers. If that unit was not used prior and your students do not have a well-developed sense of the measurement of time regarding hours and half hours, you can combine the two units into one and use them together to make a 10 day unit. The Timekeepers was designed to develop an understanding of the need for standard units and an external timekeeping device to compare durations. Seconds and minutes were introduced with simple timers to allow students to experience measurement of short durations, and then hours were introduced with digital and analog clocks, ultimately supporting students to read hours and half hours. This unit, Time and Money, extends the previous work by fostering students’ ability to prioritize chunks of five minutes to develop more facility with reading the minute hand on the analog clock. The prioritizing of fives is supported by building a connection to coins, in particular pennies, nickels, and dimes. The teaching of time has often been misconstrued as the “telling of time.” Being able to read and recite time from the face of the clock does not mean that children understand time, the passing of it, or the mathematics involved in the measuring or marking of it. This unit is part 2 of a series that is crafted and sequenced carefully to foster those understandings.
