OK, but significantly less content that the Uncle John's books
by i1patrick (4 out of 5 stars)
August 25, 2018

You can tell from the content and writing style this book is from the Uncle John's Bathroom Reader publisher. And that's a good thing. Strange History's content is OK. There there just isn't very much of it.

A large percentage of the stories in it are very short - barely five or six paragraphs. Plus, there's a TON of white space on every page (extremely wide margins all around) and the title fonts for articles are so huge they seem to take up 20% of the page a lot of times. Between the short articles and abundance of white space, I found myself flying through this book.

I'm giving this a four-star review because it was overall entertaining and it cost a lot less than the regular Uncle John books. Had they laid out the typography better, this book could have (should have?) been half as many pages. So my summary is you are getting what you pay for, just don't expect it to last you more than a few "sittings".

great for the reluctant reader
by MJ Poppyseed (5 out of 5 stars)

My 12 year old son is not a consistent reader, as he prefers sports and other physical activities. But we all know that reading is essential for kids and although he gets straight As, I still want him building his vocabulary and imagination through reading. Enter this book and my son can't put it down... he even brings it in the car with us and regales us with the weird historical facts contained within it. And yes, some of the stuff is majorly strange which is what basically keeps his interest. There are tons of pages, too, so lots of info for him to pour over, and much of it is humorous which completely keeps his interest. A great gift for any upper elementary/ middle schooler!

Worth Reading in Any Room
by Kindle Customer (5 out of 5 stars)
October 29, 2018

This was a delightful romp into the weird, the silly and the really interesting. I ended up reading about half of them out loud to a friend just to share how interesting their individual facts were. I found out the origins of at least a dozen things I'd never known before from other places. For example, when I saw the musical, "Cats," on verse of a song mentioned Duck Whittington. Not being British, I had no clue who he was. Now I know he was the mayor of London who was thought to have a magic cat who was responsible for using magic to get Whittington his job. What a cool story from history! Or how about learning that the first Thanksgiving actually happened in Texas in May of 1541, not November 1692 in Plymouth, Massachusetts. It's terrific to know I'd be the same kind of problem parent my father was, telling my kid facts that contradict the teachers right and left! (LOL)

This is a very handy book to keep around.

Strange history
by S. Winn (4 out of 5 stars)

This is a fun book to read. It's a great book to have around when you need something to occupy a few minutes. Most stories are only a page or less in length and are not complex or in-depth. The stories are interesting and put a fun view on many things from the past. This book is written to be lite hearted and to make most readers raise an occasional eye brow and go "Really".

Terrible Print Quality
by Kim (1 out of 5 stars)
October 21, 2018

Horrible print quality. Front cover is on the back, upside down and not lined up properly. In addition to the issues with the cover several pages are double printed. This was supposed to be a gift but because of this it makes it look cheap and now I have to come up with something else.

Strange History
by Delta High School Library (4 out of 5 stars)
September 13, 2016

Thanks to NetGalley and Portable Press for the digital download of Strange History by Bathroom Readers Institute! This incredible book kept me reading from beginning to end and I finished it in one sitting because of its entertainment value! Strange History is a fact driven world history of slang, fads, quotes that stand the test of time, boring parts of history, historical food facts, styles and trends by decades, almost assassinations, misconceptions, freaky facts, made-up languages, obsolete words, real life Frankensteins and a bunch of other historical fact categories. I want to use this book for a jigsaw lesson to teach what facts can be found in the 000's section of the DEWEY Decimal System. Great entertainment

I gifted this to the History nerd in my life, and he loved it. It's not a "story" book, but has little history tidbits like trivia.
