Product Description
A 2018 Caldecott Honor Book that Kirkus Reviews calls "a must-read for our times," A Different Pond is an unforgettable story about a simple event - a long-ago fishing trip. Graphic novelist Thi Bui and acclaimed poet Bao Phi deliver a powerful, honest glimpse into a relationship between father and son - and between cultures, old and new. As a young boy, Bao and his father awoke early, hours before his father's long workday began, to fish on the shores of a small pond in Minneapolis. Unlike many other anglers, Bao and his father fished for food, not recreation. A successful catch meant a fed family. Between hope-filled casts, Bao's father told him about a different pond in their homeland of Vietnam. Thi Bui's striking, evocative art paired with Phi's expertly crafted prose has earned this powerful picture books six starred reviews and numerous awards.Top Reviews
Lovely language, story and illustrationsby M Howard (5 out of 5 stars)

I love the way this book interweaves issues around diversity, culture and immigration throughout the story without grabbing onto platitudes or morals. While I think the latter is necessary and can be found in many other works, this work adheres to a personal story where we absorb many positive messages about family values, acceptance and equality without being told to do so. Phi tackles his story with such poetic, truthful language, my very verbal toddler and I are longing for more and I know this story will grow with us for several more years.
Great Thinking Book

This is a great book for discussion for kids of all ages. It's a bit of a quiet story, but there's a lot to think about while reading. For my students, going fishing is typically seen as a fun activity, so seeing this father and son fish so their family can have food to eat will be an eye-opening experience. I often use the discussion prompts: What's in the book?, What's in your head?, and What's in your heart? from the book Disrupting Thinking by Kylene Beers and Robert Probst. A Different Pond is a wonderful book to use for this type of discussion.

A DIFFERENT POND is one of the most poignant picture books I have ever read. Beautifully told, the story is engrossing. While simple in terms of plot, it is so deeply layered in complexity and inference. The illustrations were rendered with depth and a quiet, moving emotion. A must read. As child ages, reading this story year after year, his/her understanding of what this book is about will only deepen and grow.

This is a beautiful book that follows a boy and his father on an early-morning fishing trip. Though the trip is a bonding experience, it is also a multi-layered journey where the boy gains insight into what his father has lost as a Vietnamese refugee and his struggles as a man working two jobs to support his family in Minneapolis. It's a quiet yet powerful book with beautiful illustrations.

This most beautifully illustrated book tenderly tells the story of a father and son's early morning fishing expedition with gentle reminders--both visual and written--to the struggles of immigrant life. It is a memorable book that you will read over and over. Buy several copies for the children in your life.
Great Book but Defective

The original book sent and the replacement both have defects. The first one had several pages that were not cut at the top & two pages that seemed to be glued together. The replacement had two pages glued together. Originally this was to be a gift, but I'm not going for #3, so I"ll just keep the book to read to children in my family. I will now think twice before ordering any ore books from Amazon.

This is a quiet and thoughtful book from the point of view of a hard-working, confident child showing his vulnerability and being totally accepted for it by his immigrant family. The illustrations are lit like photographs and have a really cool nostalgic feel for their city in the 80's. Lake Street plays a cameo... Our family loves it and our 18 month old brings it to my lap regularly. I look forward to the day that we can really talk about it!
