Vegan Recipes That Won't Break Your Budget or Run Out The Clockby Andris Mitt (5 out of 5 stars)

This book is an arguably indispensable help not only to anyone yearning to adopt a vegan life style, but also for those who do not have the time or income to spend hours preparing vegan meals. It offers recipes for every important meal of the day. These include everything from breakfast parfaits, jicama and guacamole for snacks, ruby grapefruit and radicchio salads, Italian eggplant sandwiches, various soups, and main courses like rigatoni with roasted tomatoes and arugula. Perhaps, most importantly, all of the dishes presented can be cooked within ten to thirty minutes and have ingredients that are affordable. In addition, to offering enticing recipes this book also gives detailed histories of veganism, its doctrines, outlines a seven day plan one can make when first becoming a vegan, and shows how he or she can do so without possessing immense wealth. Therefore, if you are interested in turning to veganism, but always thought that it would be too expensive and time consuming to do so, pick this up. It will change your thinking.

Vegan Recipes in 30 Minutes opened my eyes to the value of considering a vegen or vegetarian lifestyle. The chapter defining
veganism was specific and informative, and the places where I had questions was addressed as well, all within the first fifteen pages! I liked the fact that the preparation of the meals was kept to around thirty minutes, that the ingredients for the menu's didn't require a trip to specialty stores and at the back of the book there was reminder list of foods to use vs. foods to avoid. A simple comparison that showed it's worth thinking about what we eat. I appreciated that.
Each meal was complete; breakfast, lunch and dinner with recipes both mouth-watering and good for you. On pages 16 and 17 the shopping list provided offered variety and availability of many grocery items, plus options for freezing food was useful, too. I really liked the spice list and the notion that cooks only need a small amount to add punch and interest to their recipes. The concept of fresh came through time and again, as well as the distinction between prepared and processed. After reading the book I felt I now had the chance to expand my own collection of recipes and offer my family truly tasty alternatives to tried and true, but not too "health conscious" meals. It's a great cookbook to have on the shelf.
Great Recipes and Much, Much More...

When all is said and done, the title "Vegan Recipes in 30 Minutes" by Shasta Press is, in fact, quite misleading... and, that's a good thing! The book contains dozens of recipes for making quick, simple, and affordable vegan dishes - but the recipes are just a small part of what you'll take away from the text.
The first few chapters thoroughly explain how to make conscientious choices in terms of shopping, stocking your pantry, and snacking and provide invaluable insight on how to monitor/supplement your food intake to ensure that your nutritional needs are consistently being met. What's more, the recipes themselves teach vegan cooking skills and considerations that can be applied not just to the delicious dishes discussed, but also to other meals and snacks, including your own culinary creations.
If you've ever thought about shifting into the vegan lifestyle, "Vegan Recipes in 30 Minutes" is definitely the book for you - it supports a gradual incorporation of vegan principles into your life and will equip you with the tools you need to set your gears in motion.

Pretty decent starter

This is a pretty decent starter cook book for those exploring a vegan diet. I'm not vegan (although I spent over a decade as a vegetarian), but I prefer to cook fresh, healthy and with variety. I'm excited to use many of the recipes here. They are simple but not boring, easy but not simplistic. There is a wide range of cultural influences, including Indian (and other Asian cuisines), Mediterranean and Eastern European, as well as more familiar dishes.
The beginning of the book starts off with a primer on being vegan, including reasons one chooses to follow the strict diet, potential obstacles, and useful tips on getting started. They don't suggest you jump in with two feet, but ease in and slowly eliminate animal products so you don't jar your senses. I would imaging this approach would lend to greater success with the new lifestyle.
I do wish there were photos of each recipe. The sparse images included in the book are very appetizing, but there are far too few of them. It's always helpful to have a visual to guide you - not to mention a photo's ability to entice you to try a new recipe.
I'm looking forward to using many recipes on an ongoing basis.
Recipes are not tried and true. Beware.

Worst recipe I've made in maybe 30 years! My loss for today: 30 minutes sourcing ingredients, 30 minutes cooking this crap, 15 minutes cleaning my kitchen, 4 minutes dumping it in the compost pile and $20.

A fresh little book of recipes to try
by Maximill (3 out of 5 stars)

Flipping through, this book is a great resource if you are a casual vegan or are looking to integrate some non dairy and meat dishes into your repertoire. The recipes are fresh and fun, and seem very tasty overall. Flipping through there's enough here that would please both vegans and non vegans if you live in a non-vegan/vegan household. A lot of these recipes can additionally most likely be tailored to fit vegetarians and non vegans by adding cheese or grilled chicken and the like. As other people have mentioned and I noticed, nutritional information is missing, which when you consider vegan diets you need in order to calculate the nutritional supplements you may need or to make sure you're getting enough of x and y. It's that little detail which hurts the book from being really great but if you want a great little recipe book to consult, this will surely do.
"Veganism starts with vegetarianism and carries it through to its logical conclusion."

This book is much more than recipes. The beginning of the book explains veganism, talk about why people might choose this way of life, guidelines to avoid deficiencies, what to eat (and NOT to eat), meal plans, and only then do the 106 recipes begin. They are organized in sections (Breakfasts, Snacks, Sandwiches, Beans/Grains, International, Desserts, etc.).
The book is written in an easygoing manner, like one friend talking to another. The knowledge it provides about veganism is very basic, but it's enough for the uninitiated, like me. It's not so dogmatic that I feel like I have to turn my life upside down right now and become a vegan. I will certainly incorporate some of the recipes into my current lifestyle.
Non-vegans can also glean important information about certain food choices.

The title implies that this is a cookbook for vegans; however non-vegans can also benefit from the informative tips that cover everything from label reading-some would be surprised to learn what's really in their favorite alcohol beverages, candy, and even cakes and cake mixes-to how to handle nutrient deficiencies that may contribute to depression.
I like that as a cookbook, it doesn't overwhelm with too many competing choices. It's narrowed down to ten food categories, with approximately ten recipes each. The Vegetable Dishes category is the longest, containing a mix of interesting recipes with a variety of ingredients being utilized.
The book did not include color photos of the prepared dishes, which I felt would have added value to the many appetizing recipes that were presented.
Don't have time to eat your vegetables?

Don't have time to eat your vegetables? Now you do! Growing up on huge, traditional Southern Cooking, my veggies consisted of the "potatoes" in the cliché meat & potatoes. I have grown to enjoy them but the concept of replacing all my meals with roots and stems did not sound very appealing. This easy read opened my eyes to a wide array of surprisingly tasty options of vegetation that does not leave you feeling like the Easter Bunny! I have a new respect for the discipline that comes with a vegan lifestyle. Imagine preparing economical, healthy and delicious meals in just minutes with prep time indicated before the start and with the option of utilizing items readily found at the grocers or local farmers market. I challenge the carnivores of the World to give this book a try. The life saving benefits, variety of meal options and even for reasons of protecting our environment could be a rewarding pay off.
