Popup construction is a wonder, but the print quality was lacking
by Muskiecat (3 out of 5 stars)

I am amazed at the popup construction - it really is a wonder to behold, but I have issues with the execution of the cover, which I felt took away from the magnificence of the interior, and made the book seem cheap. The print quality is really lacking. Nothing looks professional, in fact most of the art looks as if they've grabbed images off the HBO website. In an effort to pretty it up they added raised areas that look like stickers. If you wanted this to look like an old book you don't use drawn artwork for hinges or buckles on the right hand side, or at least find a way to make them look more realistic. If you're going to raise some of the areas you should have also raised the laced stitches around the edge. It would be one thing if everything was raised, but only half of the elements are raised - the rest is flat. I think HBO should have hired Bantam to oversee the production of this book, because I feel they would have created a higher quality cover.

Engineering Marvel In Pop-Up Book Design
by benjamin bannister,Top Contributor: Cooking (5 out of 5 stars)

If you're a pop-up book fan, get this. If you're a Game of Thrones fan, get this. The artistry and engineering of paper in this pop-up book is near magic.

From the start, the front and back cover sets your expectations for this book. The faux leather, the raised textures, the design of it all-it looks and feels like it was printed right in Westeros. You open it up and it's like you're a kid again being transported into another world, the world of George R.R. Marting and his Game of Thrones series. We start off with Winterfell and King's Landing in the opening pages. We discover small little tidbits of information that fills in what we already know. It's written in a way that makes each place seem like it's real, that they are describing a place that currently exists, further realizing the world George has created.

Pop-up books have come a long way since I was a kid. Pop-up book engineers are now a job title, and this was created with the hands of someone that wanted to push pop-up books further than they've gone before. Now, I'm waiting for a second book featuring the cities of Essos; I hope they make it.

This book is a work of art. It can be used as a coffee table book, or completely opened up for display on a table. Recommended.

Damaged
by Grant (3 out of 5 stars)

My copy arrived damaged. The first few pages and the first big pop-up were all ripped and broken and appeared to have been from a library or somewhere where it was available to the public. It's not what I expected, however I can understand how an even mildly "used" copy of this book can become damaged because the artwork and pop-ups are extremely intricate and complex. The book itself is absolutely brilliant and is a great buy for any fans of Game of Thrones or any fans/collectors of pop-up or paper art.

GOT Fans! check it out.

It's a wonderful book and contraption that appeals to both the GOT fan and the inner child. First you turn the pages and reveal the kingdoms. There are additional pop up on the corners and pull tabs that reveal giants and dragons.i waited a week to unfold it all into the continent Westeros. The directions provided are impt for this endeavor. You have to unfold it all in a specific order, but that's what appeals to the inner a child- it's like a puzzle. And the real test is folding it back into a book. Saying it's the directions in reverse is a bit of an understatement. Having said that it's all wonderful and fun and amazing. How someone figured out how to create the kingdoms as pop ups is intriguing. But then to have the whole book fold out to revel all of the locations in a spacious panoramic view ? MIND BLOWING!!!

And finally, it costs $65 in book stores and I got it on Amazon for $38.00. Awesome.

Wow - this is an amazing pop-up book!

This is one of the largest & most intricate pop-up books I have come across. The engineering is exceptional and there is a lot to look at. Regrettably, it is so complex that stress and damage is inevitable. If you're OCD and want to keep it pristine, don't open it more than once. I don't mind a few bruises simply because it's been so much fun to show people. Note: It may take you a while to figure out how to put it all back together into a shelf-sized book!

Amazing Engineering!
by Ray Feighery (5 out of 5 stars)

I have always been a fan of Po-Up books! The engineering involved alone is astounding. So when a GoT Pop-Up was announced it was a no-brainer!

As stated in other reviews the magnitude of some of the Pop-Ups are immense and when you fold it out (carefully) into the Map of Westeros it is breathtaking! (Which I could safely leave it out displayed)

Mine did arrive with a slight dent in the Kings Landing fold out. This is not uncommon with Pop-Up Books so I wasn't upset and I knew that Amazon would quickly issue a replacement which they did and it arrived in perfect condition!

I would HIGHLY recommend this to any SoIaF Fan!

Best Pop-Up I've Ever Seen!
by Amazon Customer (5 out of 5 stars)
March 15, 2014

The book is just beautiful! Start with the cover--It just looks impressive; I am absolutely amazed at the detail work that went into this book. The paper engineering is absolutely top notch, so kudos to Matthew Reinhart, for that part of it. The engineering is as good as any of Robert Sabuda's books.

I just finished thoroughly reading all the pull-out's and information provided about the world of Westeros--one word, "wonderful!" For those who don't realize it, it is a Pop-Up book, not a novel. While a lot of information is given, it will never be what a full book could provide, so if you're looking for info. either go to the novel, itself, or a Game of Thrones Guide. Personally, I enjoyed--especially--the information provided about the various houses and some of the history of the land. I was impressed.

And then...the BIG reveal! The spine of the book unhinges and you can open up all the pages of the book into one huge pop-up. Yes, all of the pop-ups displayed at one time. The publishers have thoughtfully provided an insert sheet with a diagram and instructions as how to (carefully) open your book so you don't damage it in handling. I've opened mine all the way up a couple of times, now, and if you follow the instructions, no damage results.

I am amazed at the size of some of the pop-ups. Some are quite large and oh, so very impressive! Even some of the more moderately sized pop-ups are beautiful. I loved the raven, dire wolf and dragon! "The Wall" had to be my favorite, though for its impressiveness, intricacy in detail and beauty. I have a rather sizeable collection of pop-up books (Sabuda and Reinhart are my favorite paper engineers), and I've seen many, many pop-ups. This is by far, the most impressive, most beautiful, and most well engineered book I have ever seen. But please remember, this book is not one that should be given to a child: First, because Game of Thrones is not a kids story, and second, because of the intricacies of the pop-ups, a child could easily damage the expensive book.

For those people who might receive a book damaged during shipping, I say, send it back and get it replaced. Authors/engineers who work to create a beautiful work, such as, Game of Thrones: A Pop-Up Guide to Westeros, do not deserve to be downgraded for something that happened to damage a book during shipping--the authors have no control over that. Give the packagers/shippers a bad mark, the authors deserve better. Care and love went into the creation of this pop-up book--you can see it just be reading and looking at this beautiful book. My book arrived in pristine condition and undamaged. Yes, you paid for it and you deserve to get an undamaged book, but if it arrives damaged, use some sense--SEND IT BACK and request an undamaged book. The authors shouldn't be penalized by knocking of 1 1/2 stars.

Finally, to all Game of Thrones fans, I think you will be favorably impressed by the quality of this book. Read it, open it, enjoy it. One person seeing the book opened up all the way told me that they could see fans of the series watching it on tv/dvd, snacking on Westeros food, and the pop-up book opened up all the way on a nearby table. Sounds like fun to me. I'll come.

By the way...take a look at the "Related Media" at the bottom of the book's page. Watch the video. I think you could get a good idea from looking at that. My best to you all. I hope you all enjoy your new pop-up book.

Don't See How They Could Have Done Better
by Catherine B. (5 out of 5 stars)
May 6, 2014

This is a gorgeous thing. I'm a long time collector of pop-up books and a big GoT addict too; it's hard to imagine how they could have done this better. We all love the moving map of the Thrones world at the start of each show and this is as close as you could possibly get with a mass produced book. Definitely NOT for little kids because of the complexity of the design, but you'll find yourself giggling like a kid as you open the "pages". An EXCELLENT gift for the Game of Thrones fan! Two cautions though - when you open the large fold-out, be warned, you need a table size space, and don't even think about trying it if you're as impaired as Tyrion after a night out with Bronn; channel your inner Littlefinger -being deliberate and calculating works best.
