Supplementary sections discuss relevant scientific issues as well as the mystery language of myths, symbols, and allegories, helping the reader decipher the often abstruse imagery of the world's sacred literature. This edition is a character-for-character, line-for-line reproduction of the two-volume 1888 first edition. It is set in new type which closely matches the Miller & Richard Old Style font used in the original. The Index at the end of Volume II is the version revised in 1925.

Recommended only to serious students of occultism

It's been more than a month since I've started studying the Secret Doctrine, and I've only scratched the surface of this mammoth study. The knowledge it contains is deep, and it requires patience and insight to truly grasp and understand its teachings. It was not designed to be a easy read, so I won't recommend it to those that tire quickly when reading and those who wish to read through a book within weeks. However if you are a serious student of occultism, this is a must have. I've heard a lot of criticism of Blavatsky and The SD before purchasing this (as well as Isis Unveiled), my mind was made up after reading Manly Hall's "Words to the Wise" where both Isis Unveiled and The Secret Doctrine was highly recommended for any serious student of Occult Philosophy. It only when I read Isis Unveiled and in my current pursue of the Secret Doctrine, I realized that those statements were only made by those who lacked understanding of the knowledge within. Read it for yourself, and you make your own conclusions.

There are already many good reviews about the SD, so I wont reiterate what others have said.

What I do want to add is the quality of the book, The hard cover addition is decently priced for the books size, and they are cloth bound hardcover, with sewn bindings super well put together and durable and you will get many years of good use out of them.

This is always an important thing to me when I'm buying hardcovers that I know I'm going to be opening over and over again. So for those of you like me there you go.

oh, one important thing. The editions I am specifically talking about are those published by the Theosophical University Press.

Not a comment on the content, as it is very professionally and well-printed. The book is smaller than I expected (thank goodness!). Was pleasantly surprised when I unboxed it. It's easy to read, flip through and the print quality is wonderful. Text is not too small for me, but it may be an effort to make out the words for those with poorer eyesight.

I have not read through the entire book yet but my perspective about whatever I have read so far is that Helena Blavatsky's figurative language with not much literal explanation, constantly requires the reader to analyze the context further deep and the contexts different facets from different angels, for which I believe the book is a little too lengthy. Figurative language can make the context sound more interesting but works better in the characterization of the short texts and stories. The book can be used as a mind jogger though to give some boost to the brain, to sharpen and enhance brain activity through constant reading and analyzing.

For anyone pondering or searching, the books of Madame Blavatsky are a must. Do not take the opinion or word of one suggesting that this woman has nothing to offer an open, inquiring mind. Research her writings yourself. A wealth of information on a myriad of topics. The breath and depth of knowledge she was able to put forward through her writings was/is quite staggering! A must-have for any researcher of history or someone just looking for a better explanation of our past then the one we've been given.
