Product Description
This language learner reader, while providing a compelling story of a young girl with big problems, highlights the struggles of Latinos living in the U.S. and shows that U.S. Latinos have a variety of experiences. Although it is written for late level 1 or early level 2, you can read this book with no previous knowledge of Spanish, as all words are defined in the glossary at the end. It contains around 120 unique words (not including recognizable cognates but including all dissimilar forms of each word) and around 5000 total words. It is highly comprehensible, told all in the present tense, and is composed almost exclusively of high-frequency words and cognates. Words that are not high-frequency are footnoted. This story is a product of years of doctoral research on U.S. Latino issues and my own personal experiences as a friend, teacher, wife, and mother of incredible U.S. Latinos. Natalia is 18 and has a big decision to make. It seems she will have to choose between her family and her friends and make a choice that will determine who exactly she is. She combats rude teachers and lying friends, has a run-in with the police, and discovers a shocking family secret…all while struggling with her own identity.
