Pain is an appetite for protectionby Bryan Ausinheiler DPT,OCS,CSCS,FNS (5 out of 5 stars)

A paradigm shift in the conceptualization of pain. Pain is a response that the brain creates when it interprets the stimuli it receives as dangerous. Pain is an appetite for protection. The brain includes a variety of information sources when weighing the safety and danger signals in the environment. This workbook helps you identify all the danger signals that contribute to feeling pain. Knowledge of pain neuroscience alone has a small but meaningfully positive effect on pain levels. This book guides you through a new understanding of pain that is based on the current research evidence with practical application to real life without weighing you down with too much science. As a physical therapist I work with people in pain on a daily basis, helping them understand what pain is and what it isn't has been crucial to helping some of my patients recover.
Explain Pain and the Protectometer has produced hope for me

I bought this book after being introduced to the noi group by a physical therapist and after going to their website and watching a lot of the videos on YouTube by the authors. So I had learned the concepts and found the Explain Pain concepts a new and hope-producing way to approach a chronic and persistent pain problem. I respect that they teach the biology of pain first and then address their process in how to treat pain. I chose to purchase this book as it is geared toward the person with pain. So it does not give a lot of theory but really you can get that from their website and videos... This is a workbook and I have found it extremely useful. It gave me tools and a language to use when working with my pain and my medical professionals. This concept acknowledges that pain is real and teaches how to retrain your body and brain to address pain. They do NOT say it is all psychological but address the brain and neural system as part of our biology.
overpriced and not very helpful

I gave this book two stars instead of one only because it does contain some helpful information, but not very much of it. It's supposed to be a workbook. The main feature is a bunch of very small sticky notes that you put in the middle section, but the sticky notes don't stick to the book and every time I try and use it, they fall all over the place. I abandoned that pretty quickly and just made a list on a piece of paper.
Also, no offense to the artists, but the illustrations are just creepy and I almost didn't buy the book because I didn't want to look at them.
This book is ridiculously expensive, as is the authors' main work Explain Pain. They are priced more like academic textbooks rather than books for the general public. I suspect what I paid for is the illustrations that I hate, and the sticky note thing that didn't work. Really disappointing. I decided to get this book because Explain Pain was twice the cost, and I hoped I could get enough of the same information. This book left me with a lot of questions unanswered. Just not enough content. I'm sure you're supposed to read Explain Pain first and then get this workbook. And now they have a new one out that is twice as expensive as Explain Pain!
This book is brillant!

If you suffer from chronic pain, this book is for you! Dr Moseley has studied chronic pain / chronic fatigue for most of his life. This book is easy to understand. Sometimes it may feel simple, but the work is solid. I am a chronic pain patient. I have found this book to help me in so many ways. I ask you as a chronic pain / fatigue suffer to give this a chance.
Fabulous Resource that actually works!

Given the field I'm in, I should know all of this but it came as a complete surprise. I've had chronic pain for 20 years and every treatment under the sun (unsuccessful), or so I thought until I read this. Worth every penny and more. Can't say enough good thing about this book. If you can, get the companion book too.
very helpful information

I found this to be enormously helpful. I like the Explain Pain book, but it was lengthy. This was easier to read.

I'm a physical therapist and this book has helped my patients with chronic pain. It's a good workbook that helps people to systematically identify and deal with origins of chronic pain - very helpful for migraines and phantom pain.

Dr. Butler is too notch-the go to guy in his field. I absolutely reccomend this book to any and all who are studying or experiencing issues surrounding chronic pain. This is extremely easy to follow and a wealth of knowledge. Further interest in the topic should refer to Butler's text books. Delivered on time and very well constructed.

I'm going through pain related to a herniated lumbar disc that is taking forever to heal. My nervous system has always been turned up too high, and I also suffer from chronic anxiety. The book has really helped me understand my pain better. I use the protectometer daily and it has helped me get back to moving more. I have less pain now than I did a month ago but I still have more pain than I'd like. The book especially helps me get through bad days and gives me hope that I'll get through this.

learning about and understanding our pain is the single most important thing we can do to start on the road to recovery (a quote from the book). I have lived with severe chronic pain for over 31 years and, with the help of this book and the NOI group, am learning how to retrain my brain in how it receives signals and 'reads' pain. And it is working!
