AAAARRRRRGGGGGGHHHH!by TDBoze (2 out of 5 stars)

Had to endure this overwritten, bloated, redundant boat anchor for a promotional test. This book actually weighs over six pounds!
There are two situations that I would recommend reading this text. They are as follows;
1. Because you have to for promotional testing
2. If your department has no training requirements and you only want to have one textbook to utilize for company officers and or Battalions/Divisions.
It does cover a wide array of information, a large percentage of which is irrelevant to paid professional department company officers.
It has a lot of information that would be appropriate for Battalion Commanders/Division Chiefs and a lot of information that is irrelevant to any line personnel.
NOOOO!!! anything but IFSTA

IFSTA has a purpose and I am glad they are out there, but these books are so brutal to read and study. The thing is like 800 pages and trying to get through it is painful. I find that as I read each chapter I think "They could have said this in 8-10 pages, but they did it in 25-30. Cut the fluff and stick to the good stuff." It will give you information that an officer should know but I find that there are many other places to get the information and probably find it in a medium that is useful and applicable to your situation. This info is very general and puts you to sleep in 5 minutes. I recently had to study it for a state fire officer certification and after pouring over it for 5 weeks straight I wanted to shoot myself, it is like hitting your thumb with a hammer over and over.
Full of great information, but very dry.

This book provided me with almost everything I needed to know for the Fire Officer I & II tests, but the reading of it was extremely dry. If I had to retake the courses and had the option of what book to use, just for the sake of not boring myself to death while reading I'd use the other popular book. I used the other book for Fire Officer I and had no problems, but I can't say whether or not the other book is adequate for Fire Officer II, which this IFSTA manual was.

I needed this book to study for a promotional exam. Book was in good shape except the binding was starting to come loose in the center of the book. Test went great. Saved me a lot of money for a book I will not need anymore.

I read this book studying for promotion, not for pleasure or education purposes. It served that purpose well enough. I felt that it covered many topics and oversimplified some very serious topics, but as I said, it wasn't really intended to be overly educational. The Fire Officer book that I read for the last promotion test was similar, but better written. Unfortunately the name of that book escapes me at this moment.
My biggest gripe about the book was that its binding is subpar. After about 4 readings, the pages in the middle are separating and falling out. It is poor quality and not worth the approximately $65 in my opinion.

All my pages are falling out

This book worked fine for the first two weeks of use. I am very careful with my books and I have never had a problem with binding conditions before this. However, this book was very poorly put together. First one page came unbound, then one after another continue to fall out. I can't even tape the pages back in because whenever I turn the page, the next one falls out. I am afraid that all the pages are going to eventually fall out.

3 Ring Binder needed.

While some of the information in this book is excellent, there are many chapters that are lacking quality information. You will need a 3 ring binder and a trip to Kinko's... This book will fall apart on you in about 2 weeks! Pages are not well secured in the book. I have several friends that purchased the book at the same time and they have all said the same. Maybe a bad run at IFSTA?
