Product Description
Kelly and Kai love to play on the gnarled old tree trunk outside their cottage in the woods: sometimes it becomes a horse, sometimes a crocodile and sometimes even a dragon.
One day a mischievous gnome makes the tree trunk come to life, and the children are whisked off to the Land of Long Ago on the back of the old tree dragon. On their incredible journey Kelly and Kai meet a princess, rescue a knight and trick the king of the trolls. But will the old tree dragon stay alive long enough to bring them home again?
A delightful fairy tale from Elsa Beskow, with beautiful illustrations in her unique, classic style.

Imaginative, magical old world charmby Francesca (5 out of 5 stars)

We love this book being fans of Beksow generally but this one is especially neat. The old tree dragon, an old lot that magically turns into a dragon with umbrella wings is straight out of a child's imagination. I highly recommend. My 7 year old boy also loves this book.
Fantastic illustration!

My children adore this book and ask me to read it to them at least once a day. I have to say I am always happy to read it. The illustrations are beautiful and imaginative and the writing of this author is a joy to read. I love the imagination her books incite in my children and this story does not disappoint. My boys are 3 and 5 yr old. My 5 yr old always sits through this story with no problem and often wants it read again as soon as we're finished. My 3 yr old can even manage to sit through the entire story but will occasionally sit on the floor and play quietly while I read, only coming back up to see the new pictures as the pages are turned. I would recommend this book to any parent that isn't afraid to include a little healthy fantasy and imagination into their childs life.

I just love this author, and as always, she delivers beauty and simplicity, not only suggesting a return to more wonderful and imaginative times but a revolution of fantastical worlds to come.

Pure delight! Elsa Beskow was a gem of a writer! I won't deliver spoilers about the story...let me only say that the cover of this tale is successfully followed by more similar fantastic action featuring these children.
Our four year old's favorite dragon story
by Marti2500 (5 out of 5 stars)

This story has it all. Imagination, magic, gnomes, dragons (both good and evil), a princess in distress, a prince, trolls, kindness with a little sprinkling of evil-vanquishing-violence - my 4 year old boy is really into dragons right now and this story is his current favorite. The illustrations are beautiful and it is just the right length. What a wonderful vintage storybook....
Drags on... but a hit
by C. Clark (5 out of 5 stars)

I would personally rate this a 4ish because it is long and drags on a bit toward the middle-end. My kids are NUTS over this story though so for that reason I will give it a 5. Kai and Kelly go on a magical adventure to the land of long ago. They meet a princess and save a knight from a Troll King. Things go awry when they ended up stranded in the land of long ago but they thankfully make it back home!
Wonderful Book!

This book is definitely a hit! The kids (2 and 4) have read it over and over and over. Then we told the story using some of their dollhouse characters and props. This is easily a classic and just awesome in so many ways! Highly recommend it! The pictures are stunning and story is so gentle and sweet.
Creepy, but my child likes it

The part where the little girl strokes the head of a giant troll and sings him a song at his request is a bit unsettling. Regardless, my 3 year old really likes this story.

It's no Peter in Blueberry Land...

I had really high expectations for this book. We have a lot of other books by Elsa Beskow and we love them dearly. Dragons and knights and a princess! I thought it could only be wonderful. Don't get me wrong, it was alright, but I didn't find it as enchanting as her other stories. That being said, my 4.5 and 2.5 year old children LOVE it and have been asking to read it every night at bedtime. They are the real critics here anyway. I give it 3 stars, they'd probably rate it 5 stars, so I'm rounding out to four stars.
There is a dragon who is slain in this book. His head is chopped off by a knight. My 4 year old has been running around pretending to chop off his toy animal's heads.
