Product Description

Handpicked by Amazon kids’ books editor, Seira Wilson, for Prime Book Box – a children’s subscription that inspires a love of reading.

A #1 New York Times bestseller, this innovative and wildly funny read-aloud by award-winning humorist/actor B.J. Novak will turn any reader into a comedian.
You might think a book with no pictures seems boring and serious. Except . . . here’s how books work. Everything written on the page has to be said by the person reading it aloud. Even if the words say . . .

BLORK. Or BLUURF.

Even if the words are a preposterous song about eating ants for breakfast, or just a list of astonishingly goofy sounds like BLAGGITY BLAGGITY and GLIBBITY GLOBBITY.

Cleverly irreverent and irresistibly silly, The Book with No Pictures is one that kids will beg to hear again and again. (And parents will be happy to oblige.)

A surprise hit with my two 3-year-olds
by Jen Brown (5 out of 5 stars)
December 26, 2018

I flipped through this book before wrapping it up for Christmas, and I was a little skeptical that my kids would dig it. When I pulled it out at bedtime tonight and said "This is a Book With No Pictures," my son whined, as if on cue. However, to my great surprise, they both started giggling hysterically from the very first "BLORK," and did not stop until the book was finished. It was like magic!

You will notice that many of the one-star reviews are from adults who determined that the book was stupid without field-testing it on an actual kid. Big mistake.

A lot of the other one-star reviews are from people who object to speaking of a hippo named "Boo Boo Butt." Tough crowd...

Beyond me how this could ever be a fun book for kids
by Steven Capps (1 out of 5 stars)
December 20, 2018

I'm just appalled that this book has so many raving reviews. I bought it to give as a gift to friends kid but I just can't. It's just incredibly stupid idea and reads as though an excuse letter written to adults trying to explain why it's so stupid... And there are only 3 or 4 places where the book actually has adult say something supposedly funny (because of non-existing gibberish sounds)... My thought on this book is that no parent needs to spend this or any kind of money in order to make silly noises at their kids. This is just stupid and it's beyond me how it's possible that kids love this book. It makes me wonder what other interests kids are exposed to or what other books they are being read, and the type of interaction they get from their adults if they love this type of book so much.

As if we need another five star review
by Customer1 (5 out of 5 stars)
June 6, 2015

I almost didn't write a review for this one because so many people have already expressed the same opinions...BUT then I realized the book deserves a million five star reviews. I watched a five-year-old transition from saying he did not want to hear the book because it had no pictures to laughing hysterically and trying to read the whole thing by himself.

Content: It is basically silly with some nonsense words and absurd statements. There is no question that this is a fun book. It is meant to make the kids laugh and enjoy reading. If it has any sort of moral teaching point it would be to avoid making assumptions. ( Sort of the proverbial, " don't judge a book by it's cover" message) I have heard some say they don't like the hippo being named BooBooButt. It's a personal thing. I thought it was funny. I think that is the only mildly controversial line in the book.

Font, length, vocabulary: I love the bold black letters. They are easy to read for beginning readers as well as old tired eyes. The length was perfect for young readers who might not have a long attention span. The wording choice was great. The author chose mostly simple words that are very easy to understand. There were a few isolated phrases that were trickier and great for building vocabulary skills. (ie. utterly preposterous).

Price, value: More than fair

Overall: I would definitely recommend this book to anyone with children.

Genius!

I first saw The Book with No Pictures on a Facebook post and I thought it was so cool I just had to get it for my daughter. At first when I started reading it to her, she is almost 4, I thought that she may not like it as much as I had hoped. But once I got the hang of reading it, and was able to really get into it emotionally and use different voices and such, she really really enjoyed it! By the end of the book she was super excited and ran to tell daddy all bout the silly book with no pictures! I think this book is an awesome book to get kids to realize that books can be fun no matter if you have something to look at or not. Definitely a cute little book and I love that we added it to our book collection!
~Thanx!~

Parents: BEWARE OF THIS BOOK!

This book is the worst. What a scam. My kids tricked me into reading it to them at bedtime - TWICE - and they had so much fun and laughed so hard that I have no idea how I will ever get them to fall asleep. Well played, Mr. Novak.

Great way to show kids that you don't have to have pictures in every book.

I bought this book for a Christmas present for my son who just turned 4 y/o a few weeks before Christmas. I thought it was a goofy/fun read, but wasn't sure how he'd feel about it not having any pictures. When I first told him the book didn't have any pictures his reaction was exactly what you'd expect from a newly 4 y/o.... "I don't want to read that"... But I had half expected this and calmly sat down on the couch and started reading it out loud. It didn't take long at all before he was jumping up and down laughing his head off as I read the book out loud giving the pages the over the top voice it deserves. Immediately after I finished reading my son requested that I read it again. That's actually been his response every time it's been read to him. He just can't get enough of this book. It's a great book to read to kids, but it does require it to be read out loud to achieve the true brilliance of this book. I strongly recommend reading it with some of your own nuances put into it as opposed to doing it dry. You'll have a lot more fun reading it that way and your kid(s) will be roaring with laughter as you seem to have a crisis in reading the parts of the book that (as a "responsible adult") the book 'makes' you read.

Definitely a great purchase and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys hearing their kid(s) laugh.

Instant Favorite
by MJ (5 out of 5 stars)
October 24, 2014

I saw a video clip of B. J. Novak reading this to children my son's age and ordered it the same day. We received it just after his 6th birthday. I thought he would like it. I was wrong. He absolutely LOVES it. He is practically obsessed with it. After the first few misleadingly boring lines, his face fell and I could see his eyes begin to glaze over. Then the funny words began and he was hooked. This is now his favorite book. He even reads it to himself and likes to change volume and emphasis each time, laughing hysterically when a new funny sound is created. Overall, awesome.

I'm so glad I came across this book
by Swim mom (5 out of 5 stars)
October 14, 2016

I ordered this book for my kindergarten nephews after reading a few recommendations on it. I must say, I'm so glad I came across this book. I did read it myself as well as to my own kids before giving it to my nephews. My kids ages 2, 7, and 11 thought it was funny to hear Mom read all kinds of funny words. They all kept giggling the whole way through this book. I think this is a great book to read to get a child interested in books who is not showing much interest on his/her own. It is also great to encourage your child to branch out and give different types of books a try. This book shows that not only traditional picture books are interesting, but hey, the actual words in the book are too!

Made even my 2 year old laugh and laugh
by EAA (5 out of 5 stars)
September 20, 2017

I wasn't sure if my 2.5 year old would get it, but he LOVES it and laughed so hard. Sometimes we'll find him "reading" it aloud, which was extra cute since there's no pictures for him to remember which words go on which page. He gets the words right, but not on the correct page. I had to warn daycare about exuberant expressions of "BOO BOO BUTT" and "BA-DONGEY-FACE!" I like having visiting adults read it to him too, just for extra laughs.

I don't think my kid ever laughed so hard
by Micah Metheny (5 out of 5 stars)
December 16, 2018

I was a little nervous that my 3 year old would be too young for this book. I got it for him for his third birthday. He immediately set it aside upon opening the package. He was not impressed at all. I read it to him before bed tonight for the first time. Huge mistake. He was laughing so hard and he asked me to read it three times. He was amped up by the time we were done so I picked up another book to help him wind down. I kept randomly replacing the name of characters with "boo boo butt" and he'd start dying laughing all over again. I want to buy a copy for every kid I know so they can share the joy we had tonight at bedtime.
