This textbook proscribes using the authors' templates for writing essays ...by PrblyNoteWorthy (1 out of 5 stars)

This textbook proscribes using the authors' templates for writing essays and making arguments. Many of the templates are not only cliche but faulty; advising introducing counter arguments with "some say" (who say?) hook & use of first person. The textbook also advises & uses contractions; one chapter is titled "But Don't Get Me Wrong." On the other hand, the selection of literary texts is interesting, except for Gerald Graff's ridiculous ego vehicle titled "Hidden Intellectualism," which seems targeted to a 1950's teen reader. I have used this textbook in three separate English classes, all of which the professors thoroughly disavowed for the incorrect forms it advocates & swore to never use again.
Poor Print Quality

I purchased this book as a guide to becoming a better writer and to help me with my writing assignments for my English college course. The examples provided in the book were very helpful; however, the print on some of the pages were blurry. Most of the pages in the book are printed on semi-gloss paper and the quality is either dull and hard to read or very blurred. It is just upsetting to purchase this small reference book for about $30 and end up with a subpar product. Maybe if the cost would have been a fraction of the price I could have overlooked the poor quality of the print.

Did not come with a code & I purchased it brand new, that being said it looked used when I opened it. Ordered it a 2nd time and still did not come with a code. Very disappointed!
Training wheels for teen writers

I find the book incredibly useful for my homeschooled high schoolers. It helps them learn how to word their essay arguments and commentary in an academic tone. I consider the sentence templates a type of training wheel as high schoolers enter the world of rhetorical thinking and learn how to express that thinking for academic purposes.
Not worth the money

Lots of teachers recommended this book to teach students how to write commentary. I completely disagree. There's nothing new. The book's setup and style makes it hard to read. It was a complete waste of money.

I teach freshman English at a community college and this book has been invaluable for my students. It demystifies academic writing, and presents the skills needed for essays in a straightforward and gently humorous way. The templates are useful and give students a solid framework on which to hang their ideas. I would highly recommend this book for high school students or freshman college students who may not have had a solid background in formal essay writing.
Useful aid for writing papers

One advantage of this guide is that it provides a lot of small, clear tips that should be helpful to writers of all levels. It's not specifically geared to beginners or experienced writers. The chapters are organized intelligently and include plenty of examples and fill-in templates a reader can practice with. It's also in a pleasing, easy-to-read typeface. I don't know how much spread there is between the rental and purchase price now, but I'd advise buying if it's not too great and you expect to have writing projects for many more semesters or to go into a career that will involve writing.

I am renting this book for school but when I received it it was pretty damaged. I had to peel pages apart because of the water damage. There is also writing in the book.. not a huge deal but I was expecting a clean and neat book.
