Product Description

Anthony Bourdain is a man of many appetites. And for many years, first as a chef, later as a world-traveling chronicler of food and culture on his CNN series Parts Unknown, he has made a profession of understanding the appetites of others. These days, however, if he’s cooking, it’s for family and friends.

Appetites, his first cookbook in more than ten years, boils down forty-plus years of professional cooking and globe-trotting to a tight repertoire of personal favorites—dishes that everyone should (at least in Mr. Bourdain’s opinion) know how to cook. Once the supposed "bad boy" of cooking, Mr. Bourdain has, in recent years, become the father of a little girl—a role he has embraced with enthusiasm. After years of traveling more than 200 days a year, he now enjoys entertaining at home. Years of prep lists and the hyper-organization necessary for a restaurant kitchen, however, have caused him, in his words, to have "morphed into a psychotic, anally retentive, bad-tempered Ina Garten."

The result is a home-cooking, home-entertaining cookbook like no other, with personal favorites from his own kitchen and from his travels, translated into an effective battle plan that will help you terrify your guests with your breathtaking efficiency.

funny, and sometimes serious
by Raechel Sykes (5 out of 5 stars)

Written in 2016, my Appetites a cookbook by Anthony Bourdain first edition is a treasure. It's gorgeous, the pictures are neat, funny, and sometimes serious. This cookbook isn't for you if you don't like his style of narrative (peppered with curses). I find it informative, tasty, and funny. It's so him. I'm still amazed how broken hearted I am at his death. I didn't know him personally. But through his books (especially Medium Raw) and his string of different TV shows... He actually let us know him. Sometimes more than we know our friends in real life. Bourdain only made 2 cookbooks : Anthony Bourdain's Les Halles Cookbook and this one. The first is more serious. I love them both.

Great read and great food

Best cook book ever. I am doing a Julie and Julia thing with it going through and making many of the recipes. It is very informative as a cook book as well as irreverant in a perfect Bourdain way. I thought I had the perfect chicken pot pie recipe-Bourdain's is better. Many simple dishes-but plenty of complex dishes as well. Something for everyone and unique photos.

5+ stars for Tony! Beware of poor packaging.

I don't often splurge on a brand new hardcover book but because of my deep respect and affection for the late Chef Tony Bourdain I decided to treat myself. If you are a fan all you have to do is take advantage of the "look inside" option on the Amazon page and you'll see what a treat this book is. You can literally hear his voice in your head as you read the text. It is rich with a ridiculous number of photos and the paper quality is excellent. It screams Bourdain from cover to cover. I will keep this book for the rest of my life. Now the bad news. I order frequently from Amazon, a wide variety of items, and rarely do I receive anything that has not been carefully and thoughtfully packaged to prevent harm. Sometimes even ridiculously so. But when I picked up this box and felt the book thud against the inside my heart sank. When I opened the box I found that not a shred of bubble wrap or cushioning of any kind had been placed in the box to protect this outstanding first edition. Only 1 of the 8 corners failed to receive some kind of damage and the white border on the front cover has black scuff marks. I could cry. Who ships a beautiful book with no protection? I am not a negative-rater and always try to give a fair review. I can't bear to associate a low rating with Tony ( I'm sure he would smirk and say I got what I paid for -free shipping) but I will seriously rethink the types of items I buy here from now on.

LOVE LOVE LOVE!! My staple, my go-to!
by JJSerge (5 out of 5 stars)

In true Anthony Bourdain fashion, this book is "delicious," approachable and ground-level (as in, not pretentiously written or with ingredients insanely beyond our daily reach). I like that it's full of recipes that are good ole' classics, yet explained 'right,' with cool photos (an engaging editorial layout). This is my new go-to cookbook, for both entertaining and just-at-home meals. If you're looking for some crazy exotic recipes, this is not the book, but if you're looking for a categorical resource for delicious eats you could imagine Anthony Bourdain himself eating during his regular routine in NYC (New England clam chowder, sausage & pepper hero, gaufrette potato with smoked salmon, shrimp bisque, clams with chorizo, etc.) this book is for you. Also, there are whole sections on Party 101, Thanksgiving recipes, and more!

One of the best cookbooks!

I can understand some users' comments regarding the occasionally inappropriate language in this book, but for a person who is not bothered by that, this is one of the best cookbooks I have come across. It is funny, excellently written, beautifully illustrated, and combines the most basic with the most complex recipes. If you are a fan of Anthony Bourdain and his style of writing and being, you will really enjoy this book. It is honestly just a pleasure to read, even if I don't make any of the recipes.

Best cookbook directions ever.
by NancyMehagian (5 out of 5 stars)

Like thousands of others I adore Anthony Bourdain so I was thrilled to discover he has a new cookbook. Not only is this book a work of art, beautiful and irreverent at the same time, but out of the many great cookbooks I have collected in my life, nobody gives better directions. I am in love with this book.

Fun and fundamental (and a little mental)
by J. Roberts (5 out of 5 stars)
December 11, 2018

If Bourdain had written this book anonymously and toned down the language, this book would still be a seller because this book is the kind of cookbook we all *want* to write but were afraid to. As opposed to the usual set themes of types of food, areas they are from, a specific piece of equipment you're supposed to use, Tony's book reflects on stuff that has influenced him, no matter where it came from or how odd it would seem from the next recipe (Mac n' Cheese sharing the same book binding as Ma Po Tofu?). The straight-forward directions show he's serious about compelling you to make his food, not just look at them. This book would be a great starter for those looking to start cooking or expand their skills, but don't want to bury their nose in one subject only. It's well-rounded and worldly, giving you plenty of options that are familiar and ideas that get you out of your comfort zone. The rants (like on making scrambled eggs or toasting muffins) and the photos make the book just that much more entertaining, even if you're not into cooking. It has a little of everything, and that's what makes it great.

Fun, Big Hit Meals that aren't for the everyday
by Franimal (4 out of 5 stars)
December 19, 2017

A great, high-impact flavor cookbook that is charmingly illustrated and easy to use. Perfect for at home cooking (i.e. easy to find ingredients and recipes you don't have to dedicate a day to). Creamed spinach and the ragu have been the big hits so far, and the section dedicated to Thanksgiving is a godsend. Only complaint is that it isn't the most balanced cookbook, not the healthiest for the every day, but makes a fun special meal for occasions.

I enjoyed reading the book
by Seni (5 out of 5 stars)

I enjoyed reading the book. I especially loved reading about his family. You see the "softer" side of him. There are parts where you feel as though you are sharing a space with Anthony. He gives reasons why you should prepare an item a certain way which is invaluable. Some of the recipes are out of touch with the average Joe and we know he is anything but!

A must-read for any fan of Anthony Bourdain
by Brett J. Belau (5 out of 5 stars)
November 5, 2018

If you can't get enough of the raw, brutally-honest writing style of the late, great Anthony Bourdain, this cookbook is for you. I've been devouring Bourdain's words, insight, and humor since he wrote Kitchen Confidential, and though I deeply mourn the loss of my favorite chef, this cookbook has made me burst out laughing on several occasions. Appetites is a terrific parting shot, with casual recipes that Tony would actually to his family and friends. No-frills or B.S., but still with quality ingredients and common sense techniques. Easily one of my favorite cookbooks in my collection!
