Product Description
Brand New 4K Master! From Henry Hathaway, the renowned director of The Shepherd of the Hills, The House on 92nd Street, Kiss of Death, Rawhide, 23 Paces to Baker Street and True Grit, comes this action-packed adventure starring screen icon Gary Cooper (Bluebeard’s Eighth Wife, Beau Geste). The Lives of a Bengal Lancer is the thrilling tale of the heroic men who guarded the British Empire’s perilous Khyber Pass in India. Surly McGregor (Cooper) and wry, blue-blooded Forsythe (Franchot Tone, Phantom Lady) are officers in charge of newcomer Lieutenant Stone (Richard Cromwell, Baby Face Morgan), the commanding officer’s inexperienced son. Motivated by a grudge toward his father, Colonel Stone (Sir Guy Standing, Death Takes a Holiday), Lt. Stone allows himself to be captured by the enemy. Foiled in a daring rescue attempt, McGregor and Forsythe face ruthless torture for military secrets until they escape into the film’s most splendid battle, where Stone becomes an unlikely hero. Featuring stunning cinematography by the great Charles Lang (A Farewell to Arms) and a strong supporting cast that includes C. Aubrey Smith (The Hurricane), Akim Tamiroff (The General Died at Dawn) and J. Carrol Naish (Joan of Arc), The Lives of a Bengal Lancer won 2 separate Best Assistant Director Oscars for Clem Beauchamp and Paul Wing, and was nominated for 6 more Oscars, including Best Picture, Director, Screenplay and Editing.

- Reviewed in the United States on October 12, 2015Classic and very entertaining adventure film(starring Gary Cooper,Franchot Tone and Richard Cromwell and directed by Henry Hathaway) about British Empire building in India and the making of a boy into a soldier and a man. Cooper and Tone are buddies who are put in charge of Cromwell - the inexperienced son of the regimental commander(Sir Guy Standing). Cromwell gets himself captured by the enemy, and,in an unsuccessful attempt to rescue Cromwell,Cooper and Tone are also captured, tortured and imprisoned. The film's exciting climax focuses on the attempted escape of Cooper,Tone and Cromwell. It is sad to write here that superlative adventure films such as "The Lives of a Bengal Lancer" are no longer being made.In view of that fact,we should all be grateful that these wonderful(and, admittedly, some not so wonderful) films are available today via the various Vault Collection Series!
- Reviewed in the United States on March 19, 2019If you can get past the fact that this is not an accurate portrayal of War nor is it particularly politically correct in certain areas then you're going to enjoy this classic Adventure film. The Unbelievablebility of this film is what makes it so entertaining to watch.
Plot line is rather predictable but that hardly matters has the true story revolves around the relationships between the men in the unit and the regimental Commander and his newly arrived greenhorn son he hasn't seen since he was a baby.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 23, 2023Great story and plenty of action. Good cast.

- Reviewed in the United States on July 19, 2014One of my all time favorites, Henry Hathaway's classic adventure tale has just thrilled me again for the umpteenth time. I have been watching this film for a lifetime and it never loses its appeal. The story is tops, the acting sensational, and the photography (especially the shots of the Bengal Lancers doing their thing) is spectacular. Gary Cooper and Franchot Tone are great together and Sir Guy Standing is a standout as the salty old colonel. If I could only watch one film ever again, this would be on the short list.
- Reviewed in the United States on May 26, 2019If you like the ol' Classic's based on the Colonial period of Britain - this is surely one - and one that's rarely seen.
Universal did a great job in bringing this Gary Cooper/Franchot Tone movie to Video for home audiences
- Reviewed in the United States on June 24, 2013Five stars for the film itself. Truly one of the most enjoyable war films of all time. This import print is a little brighter than the one in Universal's Gary Cooper Collection, but it's also not restored, has Korean but no English subtitles and sound synchronization is noticeably off in many of the scenes. I may still have bought this dvd, if only to own its attractive case.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 29, 2021Good not great but certainly a fun to watch motion picture.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of the Kino Lorber Blu-ray
The Kino Lorber Blu-ray is a Region A disk, so you'll need a multi-region Blu-ray player. It was £23 when I bought it from Amazon in March 2024, and it already seems to have shot up in price. After looking at the other versions and reviews of them I went for this one. (I decided it was not worth buying a Korean DVD which may or may not have the sound in sync with the pictures.) It's a new 4K master produced in 2020. The picture quality is excellent and the ratio looks correct. The sound has been cleaned up, too, although it's a bit thin as are most early movies. There is an audio commentary by Eddy Von Mueller. I last saw this film as a teenager on BBC2 on Easter Saturday in 1974 (yep, I'm that sad) and thought it was great. I have never seen it since. I am unlikely to see it again on said channel - it doesn't seem to be available on streaming, either. It was a huge hit at the time, but it deals with the British Army on the north-west frontier of India at the height of the British Empire, which a modern viewer may or may not find problematic. The main drama deals with the interplay of the three chief characters, played by Gary Cooper, Franchot Tone, and Richard Cromwell, and the commanding officer, Guy Standing . Tone is easily the best, and his handling of all situations, from gentleness to derring-do, is masterful. Cooper was lucky to have Tone as a sparring partner, because it's Tone who brings those scenes alive. There's a lot of humour in the film, much of which Tone injects. He was a major star in the 30s and 40s, but most of those films have disappeared from view, along with the talents of actors such as Tone. Playwright Clifford Odets said the best two young actors he had ever seen were Tone and Brando. He rated Tone the better.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Fine Old Classic.
This film is a classic and should be watched for it"s own merit and not for the morbid reason that the most evil individual who ever walked our planet favoured it above all the many movies he spent 1939-1945 watching whilst millions died as a result of his psychopathic beliefs.
The movie takes us back to the era of the Raj and whilst that period evokes mixed emotions for many, particularly Indians nonetheless it has a good story line and entertains. And really, that"s what movies are for.

5.0 out of 5 stars 41st Bengal Lancers Tour Of Duty In Colonial Days Of The Rajah.
I Love This Film, I Remember Seeing This As A Child Many Years Ago On Television And As An Adult, I Find It Just As Good If Not Better, Because I Can Understand More Across The Board.
My Only Criticism is They Should Have Got The Sound Synchronisation With The Pictures Spot On This Its Slighty Out, Which Is Annoying Its A Koren In Port And I Wonder If The Technician Responceable May Not Have Spoken English Too Well
