I enjoyed reading Luannah's personal journey through her healing process. Perseverance and healing from trauma is not an easy task. Putting a personal story to paper; it takes courage to be so vulnerable.. I know I don't have that in me.

This memoir describes some painful and lonely episodes, also some madcap gallivanting around the northern hemisphere. The author tells us of her life until 25; like Lucy Rees, she dropped out of education (in Canada) and went to see Europe on a shoestring. Her mother had remarried and gone to live in Germany, so despite never pleasing either parent, the young lady went to Germany.

The introduction is lengthy and could be written a lot more tightly. The prologue which follows is also lengthy and should be the first chapter. I don't understand why it isn't, since the story starts here.

Several jobs in hospitality later, the author went to explore Southeast Asia, and rode buses with the locals, climbed trails and met friends on beaches. She stayed far too long with a boyfriend who was only interested in himself. Also: assume mushrooms are toxic. Don't eat them.

Later she put in an entire year of servitude with a boyfriend from a different culture who had her running the restaurant and serving in it while he cooked. Our narrator provides an extremely valuable lesson or three on personal safety when travelling alone. Men who pursued her, men who tried to split her off from the crowd, bags rifled, goods stolen and sold, etc.

Two main criticisms I have about this account. The author talks honestly and creditably about her experiences and how she grew stronger. But she brainwashed herself into a 'lifestyle' which saw her spending fortunes on crystals and chanting lessons everywhere she travelled. She kept seeking out people who were just like herself, and going to them for help. I would have liked if even once she could tell us how she helped somebody else. And being exploited by a boyfriend doesn't count. People gave her gifts, gave her free counselling and yoga classes. Did she pass on the help?

Secondly, the author talks a lot about loving Nature and gaining strength from sitting under a tree or beside a body of water. But she doesn't learn about nature.

The title reference to the art of showing up is not clear to me. We're not told what advantages showing up brings to anyone, while the emphasis is on travelling randomly, journaling and buying crystals, instead of strengthening oneself through achievement. The work is generally free of typos. I can recommend this memoir to young women who need to absorb the many life lessons.

I liked the honesty and vulnerability in this special book. The author tells us how she survived in many very challenging circumstances but you didn't get the feeling she was a victim. She came out the Victor. I appreciate that she told the story of her life from her heart, it was sincere and authentic. She showed us how resilient she is and gave us a look into our own lives through her honesty.
