Without Flesh: Why the Church Is Dying Even Though Jesus Is Still Alive Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 100 ratings

Church congregations all across the United States are searching for the magic bullet, the secret to attracting people, growing their membership and their cultural relevance. They are looking for the right program, or the right environment, or the right features to help bring people back into the pews. With all of this searching for the right answer, they're missing what's right in front of them: Word and Sacrament.

The ancient church saw martyrdom as an honor. Today, we cower in corners, bickering over the color of the carpet. The ancient church conquered the world by dying at its hands. Today, we are crushed in an overwhelming retreat of trying to fit in. The first Christians were not searching for anything. They were convinced that they had found the answer. They had the powerful message of a Savior. They were fearless. Could the magic bullet, the secret, be that simple?

In Without Flesh, author Jonathan Fisk encourages readers to focus on the unchanging Word of God, instead of searching for a new tool to bring people to church, and teaches them how to be fearless and confident in proclaiming the Word of God.

I think too often I have been told that Christ is present in the bread and the wine, but that we can't comprehend it. This book did a great job of going through the Biblical reasons why we should believe and know that Christ is in with and under the bread and the wine. He quotes and uses scripture it too reaffirm the Church's teachings. Thank you Pastor Fisk.
The one criticism I would have is the first 30 pages or so are a bit confusing, don't fit the rest of the book's theme and are for me unnecessary. If your really on a time crunch skip them and if want come back to it later. Either way it's a pretty quick read.

~I appreciate this book and the others Rev Fisk has written because they help me find ways to express my faith as God places others into my life. ~As a lifelong Lutheran, I would love meeting Rev Risk and his family, if not in this life, then surely in eternity. Thank you, "Shep Fisk,* as I personally call you; you are a Reverend and a Shepherd to me.

This is my body. This is my blood. Jesus’ words are trustworthy and can only be considered as symbolic if we let human reasoning stand as a judge.
Pastor Fisk elaborates, defends and explain Jesus’ words to the reader in an elegant manner. I especially enjoyed the part when he dug into the seven “I am” statements from the gospel of John.

Like another reviewer here, I flew through; I got the book Thursday afternoon and finished it Friday night. The book is a wonderful, thorough exploration into the true presence of Jesus in The Lord's Supper, and its implications for the church. It's a dense book full of arguments that, for me, take a while to get my head around. It sacrifices the easy read of a surface treatment for a more in-depth approach that takes its time to tackle the Supper from different angles. Another challenge for the would-be fast reader (who knows no Greek) is the regular referencing of Greek terms in key passages. I found myself forgetting which term was which as I sped through the chapters (Greek looks all the same to me). So in summary, it's awesome, but I need to read it again! Slower. And more than I've understood in the past, I really want to eat more Jesus.

I enjoyed this book a great deal, and it started off a bit slow for me, and I wasn't sure where the focus was going to land in the first 30 or so pages.

But once Fisk narrows in on the Body of Christ and Works, it does a masterful job working through the Letter to the Corinthians and the use of the language of Body there, and then the Lord's Supper. The emphasis is on believing the actual words of Jesus and believing that what the Lord's Supper is, is what Jesus actually says it is.

Also, the list of sources in the back is a wonderful collection of quotes from those Saints that have gone before us to show this teaching is nothing new, it is what the Church has believed since its beginning.

It took me a day and a half to read this book. It was fantastic. I belong to an LCMS church that was busting at the seams in '50s and 80s. We closed the day school after 100+ years due to low enrollment. Our average weekly attendance is now around 85 for three services. Rev. Fisk brings up very valid points. I think sometimes when the numbers don't reflect what we think they should, I don't think we are putting our trust and faith in Jesus. I think that all church leadership should read this, especially when we should be being "Disciples".
