Editorial Reviews

Johnny Mathis has recorded many romantic albums over the past seven decades, but none quite like The Island. Recorded in 1989 but unreleased for decades, The Island transported listeners to Brazil, with all of its mystique and magic. Producer Sergio Mendes of Brasil ’66 fame and arranger-guitarist Dori Caymmi joined Mathis to subtly modernize the classic sounds of bossa nova and samba. He delivered some of his most sensual vocals ever for ten smoldering songs by Caymmi, Mendes, Ivan Lins, Brenda Russell, Alan and Marilyn Bergman, and others. Featuring a small rhythm section including talents like Robbie Buchanan, Paulinho da Costa, and Toto’s Jeff Porcaro, The Island is one of Mathis’ most beautiful, intimate recordings. Among its many highlights, Johnny brought his singular style to shimmering interpretations of the Brasil ’66 classics “So Many Stars” and “Like a Lover.” His longtime friend (and fellow Brazil enthusiast) Dionne Warwick added her own sultry vocals to “Who’s Counting Heartaches.” Real Gone Music and Second Disc Records are proud to present the first-ever standalone CD release of The Island, in a deluxe edition featuring rare photographs and period design. And, as the case with all our Mathis reissues, Johnny sat down for a fresh interview with The Second Disc’s Joe Marchese for the liner notes (which also include some exclusive quotes from Dionne Warwick). Mike Piacentini remasters at Sony’s Battery Studios. With this “lost album” lost no more, it’s time to get off on The Island!. 1. The Island 2. Who’s in Love Here 3. Like a Lover 4. So Many Stars 5. Though originally recorded in the late 80's this is still "classsic" Johnny Mathis! Well worth owning if you are a fan of this classic vocalist

I love Johnny Mathis but this CD is weak. The songs themselves are just not the right material for his beautiful voice.

I have been a fan for almost as long as he has been singing and I have seen him live 19 times, so I feel like I do know something about his work. My husband bought this album for Valentines Day. I read that it was not produced after he recorded it years ago, I now agree that was a good decision.

I have been a huge Johnny Mathis fan since 1967 and literally own all his albums. I have seen him in concert at least 25 times so I regret posting this negative review. THE ISLAND was actually recorded 31 years ago but was never released by Columbia Records and I now know why. Although Johnny is in great voice the songs and especially the sparse, tinny instrumental accompaniment are just awful. It sounds as if Johnny is singing with a second rate lounge band. They should have kept this album in the vault.

3.0 out of 5 stars Long unreleased for a reason

Whilst Mr Mathis is on fine voice here - at or just beyond his vocal peak - two things let this album down. The first is a series of poor songs that he struggles to breathe life into. The second is a dreadful synthesised backing - it's almost like this was laid down as a temp track and the album was left unfinished, but the liner notes suggest this was the completed version. When you consider that this would have come between two stunning releases (1989's In The Still Of The Night and 1990's In A Sentimental Mood: Mathis Sings Ellington), it's easy to see why Sony thought, "No, Johnny Mathis can do better than this." The three best songs were culled for 1991's Better Together and 1993's The Music of Johnny Mathis: A Personal Collection. The rest of the album just sounds clinical and uninspired.
