Editorial Reviews

Driving anywhere in Texas can cost you half a day, easy. For example, it'll take you over four hours just to get from R&B singer Leon Bridges' hometown of Fort Worth down to Houston, where the psychedelic wanderers in Khruangbin hail from. The state is vast, crisscrossed with rugged expanses of road flanked by limestone cliffs and granite mountains, forests of pine and mesquite, miles of desert or acres of sprawling grassland, all depending on what part you're in. And it's all baking under the Texas Sun that lends it's name to Bridges and Khruangbin's new collaborative EP. "Big sky country, that's what they call Texas," Khruangbin bassist Laura Lee says. "The horizon line goes all the way from one side to another without interruption. There's something really comforting about that." On Texas Sun, these two members of the state's musical vanguard meet up somewhere in the middle of that scene, in the mythical nexus of Texas' past, present, and future-a dreamy badlands where genres blur as seamlessly as the terrain. It calls equally to the cowboys boot-scooting at Billy Bob's in Fort Worth, the chopped-and-screwed hip-hop fans rattling slabs on the southside of Houston, the art-school kids dropping acid in Austin, the cross-cultural progeny who grew up on listening to both mariachi and post-hardcore out on the Mexican borders of El Paso. All of these things, overlapping in a multicolored melange, purple hues as vivid and unpredictable as one of the state's rightfully celebrated sunsets. A journey through homesick reminiscences, backseat romances, and late-night contemplations, the kind of record made for listening with the windows down and the road humming softly beneath you. Like the highways that inspired it, Texas Sun is guaranteed to get you where you're going-especially if you're in no particular hurry to get there.

The cover came damaged and the record is a little warped. Luckily I have a decent player so not a huge issue.

Great album and delivered undamaged

The combination of Leon Bridges and Khruangbin really works for me, something cool and fresh with a little retro-funk-soul vibe. I was initially reluctant to pick this up for just four songs, but now that I have it I can say it is well worth getting but definitely left me wanting to hear these guys collaborate on something again. I checked this out because I dig Leon Bridge's other stuff, but I was unfamiliar with Khruangbin before hearing Texas Sun, really glad that this turned me on to those folks because their sound really hits the spot for me, picked up just about everything else of theirs that I could find.

I loved the laidback feel of this EP. It highlights Leon Bridge's voice, with minimal accompaniment and production. Just a band in a room with a singer. It's different from his other studio albums in that it's more stripped down, and I like that he worked with a small, local band. Good stuff.

This is a sweet little ep featuring the unlikely combination of the soulful Leon Bridges and the southwestern surfadelic stylings of Khruangbin. They accentuate each others strengths very well. The title track is great and the rest are fine as well. Maybe we will get an entire album in the future.

When Khruangbin emerged onto the music scene, most notable with a few selections from Con Todo El Mundo, they were ubiquitous anywhere indie music flourished, even if what counts as indie music is still mainstream compared even to genres like jazz, to say nothing of truly experimental genres. That said, while one may be hit by the overwhelming reverb of Mark Speer’s guitar, he is a skilled player, with almost impossibly precise drum work by Donald Johnson, and Laura Lee’s steady bass. Most importantly, they had an identifiable sound. If the reverb was overwhelming, such was the case, but even if that was the case, it was worth the effort to listen past a bit of production one notedness. A demonstration of the reward comes with something like the 20 minute EP, Texas Sun, featuring Leon Bridges handling vocals. The collaboration serves several purposes. First, while it stretches ever so slightly from the core aesthetic that made the band the indie darlings that they became, it is still identifiable. Yet it is not merely Bridges who changes the sound. The production drifts in a healthy direction, and appropriately, his vocals compliment without detracting from the mid-tempo R&B/funk/rock. There are a lot of singers who would have been absolutely wrong for the project, or would simply have overdone it. Or maybe even underdone it, finding the wrong balance. That’s the problem. Khruangbin have a distinctive mood, throughout whatever they play, even when their compositions meander, and that requires a singer who won’t treat it as a showboating exercise, but also won’t mumble ballads like the show ended an hour ago. How one reacts to Texas Sun will be how one reacts to the challenge of striking that balance. If it is Donny Hathaway or nothing, this will not be the album for you. If you just want to hear Mose Allison croon over the piano, this will likely not be the album for you. Obviously, that takes nothing away from either legend, but the point is that finding a balance is hard, and appreciating Texas Sun requires appreciation of that balance, because it is not a showy set, but then, neither was Con Todo El Mundo.

Have loved Khruaghin's trippy laid back vibe for a while now and always wondered about a vocalist that would enhance and/ or compliment their music, now I know, too bad it's only an EP, highly recommended for fans or both and for someone looking beyond the auto tune , multi team "musicians" out there.
