Product Description

The young town of Denver, CO, right before the outbreak of the Civil War, is the setting for this Western drama from acclaimed director Jacques Tourneur (Out of the Past, Stars in My Crown). Recently rescued from an Indian ambush, laconic Southern loner Owen Pentecost (Robert Stack) rides into town and into the hearts of saloon girl Boston (Ruth Roman) and frontier entrepreneur Ann Merry (a pants-wearing and liberated Virginia Mayo). With Boston's aid, Owen wins the deed to the local saloon in a card game against its menacing card-cheat owner, the aptly named Jumbo Means (Raymond Burr). With secession causing tensions to rise between Denver's Northerner majority and Southerner minority, Owen is pressured to support his Confederate brothers, but he remains firmly committed to his one true cause -- gold! And there's two million dollars' worth of it that needs to be smuggled out before the start of the war!

Beautiful and original Western finally on Blu ray!

Beautiful and original Western finally on Blu ray!
Movie fans who only know director Jacques Tourneur from his amazing black & white films like "Out of the Past" and "Curse of the Demon" will be pleasantly surprised when they lay their eyes on his color westerns. This blu ray is simply ravishing, the colors (interiors and exteriors) are like candy to the eye. The sound is good and crisp, the acting is solid and the plot really offbeat and entertaining, full of tangy story details. If, like me, you're a Raymond Burr fan he brings his usual hulking menace to this story. Sturdy Robert Stack is given a really complex character and pulls it off nicely. This was money well spent, I could NOT have enjoyed this film more. If you want a visually gorgeous western double feature, you should pair this with Tourneur's "Canyon Passage" which has a rare perfect rating on Amazon and is also on blu ray.

This was an interesting find! Somehow I had never seen this before! I have always liked Robert Stack and this is a unique story that he does some fine acting in! It is a western and civil war drama rolled in together as one! Stack's character is a bit of an enigma and keeps you guessing who he is and where he stands up until almost the end and he isn't the only one! There are some other characters that keep you guessing about their motives too! It will all become crystal clear though if you watch it! Grab this little jewel while it is available!

Raymond Burr bolting about with a bottle of bourbon at the ready, Robert Stack using a deadpan that would stop a clock and oh those lady's undergarments! How close they came to fitting on the bumper of Detroit Chrome Mountains® of the year this film came out. Seriously, if you want to see how far the release stock could go and how intense the color could be, this film brings it out. This film uses studio design and color like Hans Hoffman.

More character study than straightforward genre film, Great Day in the Morning boasts really good performances from Robert Stack, Virginia Mayo, Ruth Roman, and Raymond Burr. It's set in Denver just before the Civil War and provides a thoughtful study of divided loyalties and attitudes toward patriotism that is particularly relevant today. Not a great film but an intriguing and underappreciated one from director Jacques Tourneur, who always seems to pick unconventional stories and emphasize details of mood and character psychology over action. The plot even has a slight twist at the end! Highly recommended.

Until this wonderful Blu-Ray, I had only seen this film in wretched condition, with bad color. The film is so good that it overcame rotten presentations. Now restored with its Superscope ratio and beautiful colors restored, it is a joy to behold and own. A very provocative film, quite ahead of its time that deserves to be better known. Now that it has been given all this TLC, hopefully more people will discover this classic.

First, to confess: I am a big Robert Stack fan! You can see that in many of my other reviews. I had not ever seen this movie, and had put it on my wish list. My husband gave it to me for my birthday.

The story is set on the eve of the Civil War, in Colorado. Tensions are building between the Northern sympathizers in Denver and the smaller population of Southern sympathizers. Owen Pentecost (Robert Stack) is on his way to Denver, but has been waylaid by hostile Indians -- a cliche to be expected in a movie made in 1956, I'm afraid. He is rescued by two men and their boss -- a very independent woman, Ann, who is being wooed by one of the men, Kirby -- who is a Union Army captain on special assignment as a spy. Pentecost quickly establishes himself in the town, winning a gambling hall from a local power broker (Raymond Burr). Pentecost also wins the woman Burr considers his property, a brunette named Boston. Later, making the rounds of gold claims he also won from Raymond Burr, he is forced to kill one of the Northern men. He ends up taking the man's orphaned son under his wing.

To say more would be to expose potential viewers to spoilers. I will say that what I like about the film is that it takes some turns which avoid the usual pattern of these sorts of movies. While it doesn't get terribly deeply into characters other than Owen Pentecost -- and he is not always a likeable fellow -- it does avoid the more maudlin plot devices we find in movies of this period. And for once, the handsome hero does not get the girl. I find that rather refreshing.

3.0 out of 5 stars Starker Western mit hochklassiger Besetzung, jedoch mauer Bildqualität
