Product Description
In Ronald Neame’s Tunes of Glory, the incomparable Alec Guinness plays Jock Sinclair—a whiskey-drinking, up-by-the-bootstraps commanding officer of a peacetime Scottish battalion. A lifetime military man, Sinclair expects respect and loyalty from his men. But when Basil Barrow (John Mills)—an educated, by-the-book scion of a military family—enters the scene as Sinclair’s replacement, the two men engage in a fierce struggle for control of both the battalion and the hearts and minds of its men. Based on the novel by James Kennaway and featuring flawless performances by Guinness and Mills, Tunes of Glory uses the rigid stratification of military life to comment on the institutional contradictions and class hierarchies of English society, making for an unexpectedly moving drama. BLU-RAY SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • New 4K digital restoration, with uncompressed monaural soundtrack • Interview from 2003 with director Ronald Neame • Audio interview from 2002 with actor John Mills • Television interview from 1973 with actor Alec Guinness • Trailer • PLUS: An essay by film scholar Robert Murphy

- Reviewed in the United States on January 13, 2025One of those great classics that can get easily overlooked, but the film buffs know what quality is. This one is one of Alec Guinness' finest works.
- Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2024This is a wonderful character study, and showcases Alec Guinness in a unique role unlike any I've seen him before. A must have for any fan of the Highland Regiments. The Blu Ray quality seems very good.
- Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2021A taught drama illuminating the tensions of class in English society. Alec Guiness and John Mills elevate this drama to the highest order. As always Criterion treats this film with utmost respect

- Reviewed in the United States on March 2, 2020Two great british actors slightly playing against type. Dont let the quaint setting fool you. It has a sting in its tail.
- Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2021Truly explosive acting performances from Alec Guinness and John Mills, whose characters become bitter rivals in the story, raises this film to the level of greatness. Their rivalry unfolds in the deceptively peaceful setting of a brigade HQ in peacetime Scotland, and builds up to a crescendo as the two men, with strong, but very different personalities and outlooks on life, wrestle with their mental health. The trouble starts when Lieutenant Colonel Basil Barrow (John Mills) arrives at headquarters to replace Major Jock Sinclair (Alec Guinness), who deeply resents what is effectively a demotion. The former is austere and highly disciplined, while the latter is an overbearing extrovert and bully. Both are obsessed and stubborn, and the course is set for a showdown. Excellent film from Ronald Neame, drawing on all his vast experience as a screenwriter, cinematographer, producer and director, to stamp his authority on this 1960 landmark of British cinema. Neame would go on in 1972 to make what is perhaps one of the best adventure movies ever - The Poseidon Adventure, starring Gene Hackman in the lead role.

5.0 out of 5 stars A first class restoration.
Fans of this British classic can rejoice in the knowledge that Criterion have done a first class job with the restoration, at last the dark line on the right side of the picture in the last twenty minutes has been eliminated I will not bother to upgraded to Blu ray for this film as the DVD picture is a joy to behold on my 40inch Samsung.
