This kept our kids, ages 3, 5, 7, 8 busy! They worked on it for several days about half hour at a time. Only thing was it was messy but kept them occupied so wasn’t complaining. Cleaned up fine but it’s just that chalky mess from the egg material. They loved getting the dinosaurs out and still play w those. Great gift and they want another one. Maybe this spring when they can do it outside!

My niece loved this, although it ended up being waaaay messier than we expected and a bit difficult to actually chip away at the egg

I have bought many of the Mindware Dig it Up products over the last few years, especially all the dinosaur related ones since my 7 year old daughter loves all things dinosaurs. When I saw they'd come out with a jumbo egg, I bought it for her for Christmas. We just hatched the dinosaurs today and I was not as impressed as I've been with past Dig it Up eggs.
A few things to note, in the item photo, it showed a kid hatching the egg on a special Dig it Up mat, which I thought was included. It's not, so you'll need lots of newspaper to cover the table. You're also going to need a really big bowl - even a 4 Qt bowl was too small, so we had to soak half of it for a while then soak the other half. It says in the directions to soak for 5 minutes. Well yes, for the small Dig it Up eggs, but not for this one. We soaked each half for about 30 minutes a side and it was still very difficult to dig the clay.
The other problem with this egg is the tools they give you are the exact same chisels for the tiny Dig it Up eggs! They really needed to include large tools because this was nearly impossible to dig. My kid was getting very frustrated that she only got 1 dino out after 15 minutes of chiseling. We even soaked it again, but my husband ended up getting a screwdriver and hammer to chisel/break it apart more. The tools are inadequate that come with this.
Once they were finally able to get all the dinosaurs out, we were underwhelmed by the sizes. Definitely not a 7" dinosaur, more like 4" and they all have ridges in the skin, so you'll have to soak the 7 dinosaurs for a while to clean them up. Overall, not happy with this egg and wouldn't recommend it. Your kid will not be able to do it alone like the small Dig it Up dino eggs, so I'd recommend those over this one. And for the price, I feel ripped off for the cheap looking and small dinosaurs.

Wow is this thing tough to dig at. I guess it could last days of slow digging, but was too difficult for my 5 year old.
My hand hurt after chipping away for hours on Christmas day and we got 2 dinos out. My other older kids have spent timing digging as well. Could use a brush, I used a small wilton brush. If the chipping tools were nicer it would be a bit easier to use and higher rating

Woe to the parent whose child receives this cursed object. It takes absolutely forever to dig the dinos out, my kid didn't finish and it "saving" it for another day. Unless he's outside it's not happening. If you resoak the egg, be prepared for wet, slimy, clay to be flung about your house as your child digs.
This is a great gift for someone you genuinely dislike, and want them to have so much egg dust in their home the only way to be rid of it is to move.
Anyway avoid this egg entirely, get the smaller eggs which are much easier and more manageable for kids to actually get the dinosaurs out instead of giving up and leaving a wake of destruction for you to clean up.
