Editorial Reviews
October 1, 1969, in Augusta, GA, was a homecoming for James Brown. His and his band's smoking performance at the city's Bell Auditorium was captured on tape, with an intention to make an album of the show the cornerstone of a move back to his roots. Live at Home With His Bad Self was scheduled as a lucrative holiday release. But JB and that band broke up. Soul Brother No. 1 called in a new, young band, featuring Bootsy Collins, and within a few weeks they recorded the funk anthem "Sex Machine.

5.0 out of 5 stars THE GODFATHER OF SOUL
Señores, pasen, vean.....i DISFRUTEN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Utterly Fantastic!
Releasing live albums after an artists death is always looked upon as an obvious cash grab, normally because it is. However, the release of Live At Home With His Bad Self by James Brown is something that fans need to give their attention to. It's an hour long recording of Brown in his prime and an extension of a previously released album.
To hear the best music that James Brown ever put out, the first place you should always look is his massive collection of live albums. The man must have released a good hundred of the things in his life time and the odds of finding a bad performance on one of them is extremely slim. Live At Home With His Bad Self, is a very lively performance from James Brown recorded at the Bell Auditorium in Augusta on 1 October 1969. A chunk of the featured tracks were previously released on one of Brown's more common live albums, Sex Machine. The record was released as a double LP back in 1970 and features a number of the performance found on this record. Live At Home With His Bad Self, takes those tracks (all of which have been nicely remastered) and reinstates the large amount missing from the previous release.
For those wondering about the sound of the songs featured here, you've got no reason to worry. The band sound very natural on stage. There's no over compression and horrible use of loudness. This is an excellent sounding live album and one of James Browns better ones. The performance itself is absolutely stunning. The man himself puts on a performance that only he can match. His band play some incredible guitar, features some fierce drums and bass. One big highlight is the horn section, who take centre stage quite a lot during the entire performance. There's plenty of saxophone solos etc and they really know how to rip. It's utterly fantastic.
The only thing that I have to complain about is something that is so minor that I don't think it's worth really talking about, but I'll do so because I have no doubts someone will bring it up. After one song, there's a noticeable fade out. When the song goes quiet, there is a brief echo. This to me suggests that the echoing reverb found here is a little bit artificial. It didn't bother me too much but it created a weird eerie vibe for a couple of seconds that distracted from the overall vibe of the recording.
As a whole, Live At Home With His Bad Self is a live record that is without a doubt a priority buy for James Brown fans. The quality in terms of sound and performance is as good as you'll get. The fact it's from that period of time where Brown was literally untouchable is just the icing on the cake. If you're a fan, just buy it. There's nothing to worry about and absolutely nothing to regret.
