Product Description

When the easygoing would-be novelist Zorg (Jean-Hugues Anglade) meets the tempestuous Betty (Béatrice Dalle in a magnetic breakout performance) in a sunbaked French beach town, it’s the beginning of a whirlwind love affair that sees the pair turn their backs on conventional society in favor of the hedonistic pursuit of freedom, adventure, and carnal pleasure. But as the increasingly erratic Betty’s grip on reality begins to falter, Zorg finds himself willing to do things he never expected to protect both her fragile sanity and their tenuous existence. Adapted from the hit novel 37°2 le matin by Philippe Djian, Jean-Jacques Beineix’s art-house smash—presented here in its extended director’s cut—is a sexy, crazy, careening joyride of a romance that burns with the passion and beyond-all-reason fervor of all-consuming love. DIRECTOR-APPROVED TWO-DVD SPECIAL EDITION FEATURES • High-definition digital restoration, approved by director Jean-Jacques Beineix • Blue Notes and Bungalows, a sixty-minute documentary from 2013 featuring Beineix, actors Jean-Hugues Anglade and Béatrice Dalle, associate producer Claudie Ossard, cinematographer Jean-François Robin, and composer Gabriel Yared • Making of “Betty Blue,” a short video featuring Beineix and author Philippe Djian • Le chien de Monsieur Michel, a short film by Beineix from 1977 • French television interview from 1986 with Beineix and Dalle • Dalle screen test • Trailers • New English subtitle translation • PLUS: An essay by critic Chelsea Phillips-Carr

Warning: a few spoilers. Betty Blue (1986, directed by Jean-Jacques Beineix) is a complicated and tragic love story. In some ways, however, it’s really a simple story of unconditional love. Betty (Beatrice Dalle) is struggling with mental illness, and her mood swings often result in violent and impulsive behaviors, such as throwing things and even kidnapping a child. Her boyfriend, Zorg (Jean-Hugues Anglade) is there for her every step of the way. As the film progresses, one can see that he truly loves Betty, and will do anything for her in order to please her and distract her in the hopes of her behavior stabilizing. However, when Betty sees something that she’s interested in, she goes ‘all-in’ (in this case, discovering an unpublished book of Zorg’s), trying to get it published, even to the point of committing violent acts against the publishers who reject the book. Each time that Betty is ‘in trouble’ Zorg will concoct a plan to get her out of any potential repercussions. Betty and Zorg need each other throughout the film, but Zorg has the tough task of keeping Betty in check. The ending is a tragic one (I won’t spoil it), and depicts a message of unconditional love, in my opinion. Betty Blue is a film that has a lot of humor in it, despite it being a fairly challenging watch. There’s also a lot of nudity in it, with both characters nude a lot of the time. This sex-charged tragic love story also has a nice soundtrack that’s catchy and memorable. The Criterion Collection blu ray has some good special features as well. Betty Blue is essential to your French film collection.

I had never seen this movie, but I was aware of it's reputation as a somewhat explicit French import.

Well, I watched the new Criterion Blu-ray this weekend and it was amazing. Part romance, part comedy and somewhat dark concerning the issue of mental illness.

I was drawn in immediately and quickly became adjusted to the casual attitude towards nudity, sex and language. In other words, it was realistic with believable characters, story lines and dialogue. It never felt long with a running time just over 3 hours. I can't imagine what material was trimmed for the original theatrical version. Every scene and story arc contributed to the surprising conclusion. The story goes in directions one might not expect.

The Blu-ray transfer, approved by the director, is gorgeous with a striking color palette. The beach scenes are beautiful with deep blue skies and warm sunsets.

The mono sound is crisp which renders the music score, /by two composers, cleanly as it is practically a character unto itself. Despite being subtitled, the sound is essential in conveying the warmth and emotion of the story.

An informative interview with the director and principal actors is a nice bonus. Criterion offers their usual high quality effort for this release.

I found this film to be that "something different" we're often searching for as we scour through titles on video.

I was immensely satisfied with this film. The story was interesting and continued to develop, the characters were endearing and intriguing. The setting and cinematography was also very well presented. I don't want to delve too much into the plot as its best to go in with no expectations. From a technical standpoint the video/audio on the blu ray are great, and the supplemental features have some great documentaries as well.

The pro video sites are best read for a proper understanding of what you get. All I can say is that despite it being from an older transfer it looks really good and sounds perfectly fine. The film is hard to take and borders on insane. What really makes this set worth the purchase is the documentary. It's wonderful to have actors speaking so frankly about a project and their work on it.

I won't go into the story because the above description tells you what it is about. Nevertheless, this is one of the saddest films I've ever watched. I've seen a lot of foreign art films and many of them are pretentious. This has some elements of that but the love story is interesting. The leading couple are a bit strange, but it gets even stranger as their relationship goes on. Expect lots of nudity and bizarre behavior. Her increasingly erratic moods lead to a truly depressing ending. I saw this movie a long time ago but it is a film that stays with you regardless of whether you like it. I thought the couple were bonkers but I still actually cried at the end. I don't think I could ever watch the film again because it brings back memories of personal tragedy and my wife's death related to cancer even though the story isn't about that. It is very romantic but be prepared because it is a ride straight into sadness and depression. I still give it four stars with some reservations because of it's emotional impact on me.
