Editorial Reviews

Four time Grammy Award winner Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit reissue two of the group's earliest albums - 2009's self-titled Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit and 2011's Here We Rest - both remixed by Grammy Award-winning producer Dave Cobb and remastered by Pete Lyman. These records contain some of Isbell's most beloved fan favorites, including "Alabama Pines," "Codeine," "Cigarettes and Wine," "The Blue" and "Tour Of Duty". Here We Rest is the second album from Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit and follow-up to their acclaimed self-titled debut. An Alabama native, Isbell comes from a tradition of Southern music and proudly embraces his roots, which shines through in his songs and even in the title of the album. Here We Rest was Alabama's original motto. However, instead of resting comfortably within it's boundaries, Isbell, along with keyboardist Derry deBorja, guitarist Browan Lollar, drummer Chad Gamble and bassist Jimbo Hart transcend them. His thoughtful songwriting and warm, soulful voice are genuine, natural abilities that come through in the music.

I ordered Jason Isbell's album Here We Rest on vinyl. I received this album from what is apparently an "American experimental metal band". Not sure how that got mixed up.For the record, the album I did want is fantastic and if you are on the fence about buying it, don't hesitate! I know people point to Jason Isbell's stuff from Southeastern on (and don't get me wrong, that album and everything since have been great), but don't sleep on Here We Rest.

Just when I think I have found my favorite Jason Isbell album I find another just as good. Isbell's songwriting is second to none

Here We Rest came after Isbell's first two solo albums and 2 years before his breakthrough, Southeastern. His first two were good but not great, though they each contain some of his greatest songs such as "Dress Blues" and "Cigarette's And Wine". I think that Here We Rest really deserved to be the album that broke Isbell wide open, as Southeastern would do two years later. This record is full of great songs, some of which are not very well known and rarely if ever played live. Songs like "Save It For Sunday", "Stopping By", "We've Met", and "Daisy Mae" are all heartbreaking and beautiful songs. The album also contains some of Isbell's best tunes like "Alabama Pines", "Tour Of Duty", and "Codiene", and live favorite rocker "Go It Alone". Again, full of great tunes and I'm still not sure why this album wasn't more successful, though it was successful but nothing like what was to follow. While I can't rank it as high as Southeastern, largely because of the songs "Cover Me Up" and "Elephant", I actually place it higher than "Something More Than Free", which I rank his 3rd best. Just my 2 cents. Definitely worth buying if you like the 2 albums that followed it.

If your a fan of Jason Isbell and donot have this album then this album and vinyl pressing is very good. In fact all the other ones I own are orginal pressing and are ok. This pressing is by far the best sounding and very quiet. If you donot have any of his other albums this is a good overview of his singer songwriter abilities. He is one of the beter contemporaries at this time.

Jason Isbell is decidedly one of the most talented Americana active singer/songwriters. I first heard his music after chancing upon a Drive-By-Truckers song preloaded on a 2003 Dell computer (that we still have). Starting with his contributions on that album and then following his solo effort- and now with the formalized 400 Unit, he has truly refined his craft to a special level. This album is solid throughout and I will refrain from giving a song by song review, except to say that it is honestly my favorite album of the last 2 years. My wife and I have enjoyed this music enough to drive regionally to Ithaca NY to see their set, flown to New Orleans to see them play, driven to Charlottesville, VA, and are flying this weekend to Atlanta to see their performance. If you like Americana music, or Alt-Country, or Roots Rock, or whatever you choose to call good music that falls between genres, you are missing out if this album is not in your collection. Start here....and work back through his collection of work.

Very good music, very disappointing packaging.

I am a dinosaur. I have an iPhone with about 2500 songs on it and probably 2485 of these are songs I've downloaded from CDs that I own. I even have a Yep-Roc Records t-shirt that proclaims "I STILL BUY RECORDS". I like liner notes and printed lyrics. If I wonder who is playing saxaphone or singing background vocals on a track, for example, I like to pull out the CD case and look it up.

Having said that, DOWNLOAD THIS ALBUM, DON'T BUY THE CD for two reasons - One, it is very good and Two, the CD packaging offers virtually nothing other than the names of the songs (and they aren't even numbered). The band is listed but the instruments they play aren't. Obviously, I paid more for the CD than I would have if I downloaded it and, for the first time, I regret the decision.

If this is the future of CDs, I won't have to worry out running out of storage space in my home.

    One man's opinion.

If this is your first Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit purchase- BUY IT! You will be hooked, excellent music. They definitely get their style from Tom Petty and the Heartbreaker's. Rock on!

If you like Jason Isbell, this is one of his best albums.

I received a Drive by Truckers to review many years ago and I really liked the music, but I wasn't aware until a few eeks ago that Jason Isbell was the lead singer and then I watched a news broadcast featuring his latest album, The Nashville Sound. The piece described his struggles and successes and it intrigued me so I purchased this one after listening to the samples and the music on the news piece. It's a great album. It's soulful with meaningful lyrics and great instrumentation. Two thumbs up! (I bought Nashville Sound after listening to this one.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Keeps me happy
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 14, 2014
After "rediscovering" Jason Isbell via Live From Alabama and Southeastern, I decided I needed to rectify the oversight of not procuring Here We Rest when it was released back in 2011.

Sometimes it's difficult doing that for someone who, as I said in my review of Southeastern, is progressively getting better by the record, but this one does not disappoint.

One of Isbell's strengths is his ability to move between styles effortlessly and turn in a stellar performance each time. So it is he moves from the country of Alabama Pines to the folk of Daisy Mae (a beautiful song, without a doubt) and the soul of Candy Staton's Heart On A String, without missing a beat. The latter is such a fantastic evocation of the Muscle Shoals sound, appropriate as that was where it was recorded, that I half expected Otis Redding to join in.

In between there's some humour in We've Met, the slightly more rock-inflected Stopping By and the quirky insertion of harmonium-based The Ballad Of Nobeard.

The catchiest tune is probably that for Codeine, again imbued with a measure of sorrow, leavened with humour, and made even better by the violin of Amanda Pearl Shires, who I assume also provides the country backing vocals.

The set rounds off with the excellent Tour Of Duty, another of Isbell's tales of the soldier's life post-demobilisation.

Combined with the other two records mentioned at the top of the review, this is going to keep me happy for quite some time.
