A5 size is largest in lineup

The Cousin is the largest planner in the Hobonichi Techo lineup. At 148 mm x 210 mm (5.8" x 8.3"), the A5 size is twice the size of its A6 Original counterpart, so there’s plenty of room to use the Cousin for both business and pleasure.

Perfect planner paper

Perfect planner paper

The thin, light paper, called Tomoe River paper, is strong, resistant to bleeding, and allows ink to dispense smoothly across the paper — an ideal choice for a planner.

180-degree lay-flat binding

180-degree lay-flat binding

Special stitch-binding allows the planner to lay completely flat without having to hold it down.

Rounded corners

Rounded corners

The page corners are rounded to minimize creasing and damage to the edges when carried around or stored in a bag.

Serial number

Serial number

Serial numbers on the inside back cover give each planner a unique identity and make your planner your very own special book.

Cousin-exclusive weekly page

Cousin-exclusive weekly page

The weekly page is a special section only available in the Cousin edition. It contains one week per two-page spread, with 24-hour timetables labeled 0:00 to 24:00.

Yearly Calendar / Yearly Index / Monthly Calendar

Yearly calendar

Yearly calendar

A convenient double-page spread shows the yearly calendars for 2019, 2020 and 2021 at a glance for a useful reference when planning ahead.

Yearly index

Yearly index

Each 2-page spread contains 6 months, with a total of 12 months in the yearly index. The top of each monthly column includes 3 checkboxes for writing goals and to-do lists, and the bottom of the page has extra space for note-taking.

The yearly index spans January - December 2020

Monthly calendar

Monthly calendar

The monthly calendar is ideal for managing schedules. The graph paper design is lightly printed to make it easier to write in your plans and take notes in an even line. The blue gray and red print both allow for high visibility when writing in the calendar.

The monthly calendar spans December 2019 - March 2021

Daily box

Daily boxes

Each box is lightly printed with a graph design to make it easy to fill in a full day’s worth of plans. You can also take full advantage of the graph design by drawing out sections to allocate plans or entries visually.

Weekly Pages / Daily Pages

Weekly pages

Weekly pages

The Cousin contains weekly calendars that are useful for managing detailed schedules for the week. The timeline covers a full day from 5 AM to 4 AM the following day, allowing users to record any and all plans.

Time line

Time line

The weekly calendar contains a time line that begins at 5 AM and ends at 4 AM the next day. Each hour consists of two lines on the grid, making it easy to write in intervals of 30 minutes.

One day per page

One day per page

The planner features a format with a page devoted to each day. There’s lots of open space to plan the day ahead and enjoy recording your memories and activities. Think of the pages as containers for random ideas, with a clear record of the date. Paste magazine clippings, ticket stubs and photos to make the techo something completely unique ― your imagination is the only limit.

Old Japanese lunisolar calendar

Old Japanese lunisolar calendar

The date of the old Japanese lunisolar calendar is also included under the day’s date. This calendar was used in Japan until 1873, when Japan adopted the universal Gregorian calendar. Some days in this lunisolar calendar are specified as standard days signifying the changing of the seasons. We’ve also included solar terms based on this ancient calendar.

To-do list

To-do list

The to-do list is located at the top of the page with checkboxes for keeping track of your goals for the day.

The “Secret Line”

The “Secret Line”

There’s also something we call the “Secret Line”: a vertical line that runs parallel along the right of the timetable. This separates the schedule on the left from the open memo pad on the right. We’ve printed it lightly enough that you can ignore it when using the page as a whole.

Daily quotes

Daily quotes

From the heartfelt to the humorous to the whimsical, each page of the planner features a quote in Japanese, specially selected from the planner’s parent site, Hobo Nikkan Itoi Shinbun. Currently, the quotes for the Cousin version are only in Japanese. If you would like the quotes in English, please buy the A6 Hobonichi Techo Planner.

Remember This

Remember This

We’ve included a page at the beginning of each month for highlighting important dates, making to-do lists, and writing other notes to help in planning ahead. The page includes a Japanese-language quote from literature and poetry.

Informational Pages

Memo pages

Memo pages

The book includes blank pages in the back for capturing random thoughts, sketching or storing items of interest that aren’t time-sensitive. These pages are made with the same 3.7 millimeter graph paper design used in the daily pages. Number of memo pages: 5 pages

Time Table

Time Table

The book includes two timetables for writing in a recurring hourly schedule for each day of the week. These are useful, say, for filling in the broadcast times of favorite television shows, or splitting up house chores.

Graph Paper

Monthly Listing and Two Page Weekly Spread make this a Winner
I buy the Japanese A5 Techno Cousin due to the monthly listing with days in a column and the two page weekly spread (see pictures). It is only available with a Monday start and while it was confusing at first I’ve gotten used to it over time. It helps that Sunday is marked in Red everywhere. These two features alone are fabulous and I find I rarely use the individual days. The weekly 2 page layout is only found in the Japanese Cousin version. The monthly view with the days listed down in columns is great for tracking daily items. I put headers on each column and color in the box for each day/each item. When the row is filled I know I’ve completed all daily tasks for that day. You can see what layouts are included in each version on the website at 1101.com. The paper is unique and I have to make sure to leave time for ink to dry on almost all of my pens (Microns, Pentel Energel, Y&C Gel Xtreme and Zig Calligraphy) or it smears. I keep wax paper in it that is cut to fit and use it to keep the ink from smearing on the opposite page if I don’t allow drying time. It's not great with mixed media (buckling) but with a very light water touch it works (such as watercolor pencils). You cannot correct the watercolor though with additional water. I've had some bleed through mostly with heavy ink usage such as coloring in an area. Even with the mainly smearing issues I’ll buy one every year due to the layouts which I find perfect.

I want to love this planner. And I mostly do. But I feel a little overwhelmed by it.

POSITIVES: I can use it for all the things - tracking bills in the monthly pages, homeschool plans in the weekly pages, and schedules and tasks in the daily pages. It looks beautiful in my leather cover and there’s plenty of space for writing notes.

NEGATIVES: The pages are thin so pen choice is pretty important. There’s no bleed but if you use a dark pen you can see the writing from the previous page. It’s pretty pricey - but it should be noted that it replaced the three planners I used to use for all the things.

I had to really gird myself to spend this much money. I read reviews and looked at the product photos. I finally took the plunge and I’m so glad. I had to flip through a few times to appreciate all the subtle elegance of the sections and how easy they’ve made it (without page markers of any kind) to move among sections. The paper feels nice, the cream color and very fine lines in leather color are easy on the eyes. They’ve managed to cram in all the layouts and elements I usually have to cobble together by buying three different planners and dismantling, holepunching, and arranging in a binder - and this hobonichibis better than the best I can create by that inelegant method. So far I’m very happy with my indulgent purchase!

I’m usually a rings or happy planner kinda girl but decided to give the hobonichi cousins a try as this offered the option of daily, weekly and monthly all in one book with great paper quantity. This is pretty compact and allows me to do what I was doing in multiple planners in a single book. It requires a finer nip pen which I don’t mind. The perpetual calendar offers great forward planning. The only downside is I paid way too much for this planner and if I decide to do a hobonichi in 2021 I’ll definitely order from JetPens or a less some where other than amazon.

IF I do get my HOBONICHI Techno Cousin Book, this will be my third year using it and I LOVE IT. I do not know Japanese language but love the elegance of the calendar
ON the downside, delivery is difficult as the product arrives at different time than estimated and the seller sets up the mailing (USPS) to require a delivery signature which is almost impossible for me.
So, wonderful product , fun to use and I highly recommend. But , darn it, the seller should stop demanding signature on delivery of a calendar!

I plan my month in view and entire day in the weekly sections and I use the daily section for my bullet journal and notes. I index my notes in the yearly section. Is the best of all the planners I have ever used.

I just can’t say enough how pleasurable it is to write in gridded cream-colored tomoe river paper. This is the best planner ever, even if I can’t read the Japanese in here - the dates have enough info to get that part right - so who cares.

I love the three part layout of monthly, weekly and daily spreads. I’m a graduate student so I can ant to track assignment deadlines, meetings, and personal notes as well. The weekly spread is great for capturing the minutia of my week but having enough space to take Meeting notes daily is the biggest thing that’s making this my new favorite planner. Prior to this I settled for the Moleskine weekly because I loved the weekly/note spread, but this is superior. I do wish there was an English version and that it came with tabs or dividing cords and a back pocket, but I think this is my new planner of choice. I wish I hadn’t discovered it in my last semester but I think it will continue to be super useful in my work life.

Love this diary. I am a dyed in the wool fountain pen user so very picky about my paper. This is absolutely perfect. The Smythson diaries are similar quality but I prefer the Cousin form factor. And I love the page layouts as well. I bought the dedicated black leather cover from Hobonichi in Japan which turns a beautiful diary into an objet d’art.

I use this as my daily journal, basically writing a brief overview of my daily activities on each page, and including my thoughts and impressions. I have the 2019 version direct from Japan but living in Germany, I wondered if there was a seller who I could get the 2020 version from. Ordering directly from the company in Japan looked to be an expensive endeavor. The product was just as expected and arrived quickly and safely. No complaints at all :D
