Guitar Lacquer Toner Colors

Guitar Lacquer Toner Aerosols are used to add controllable, even color to the guitar. Made from fade resistant dyes, they apply transparent color so the beauty of the wood shows through, yet they are strong enough that several coats will create the dark sunburst effect that is so popular on guitars.

Starcast Amber applies the basic light tone colors of the guitar. Encore Brown is used to tone the body sides of acoustic guitars, which are typically darker than the soundboard. The Encore Brown is also used to create a sunburst effect around the edge of the body of a guitar, whether acoustic or solid bodied. Often Encore Brown is used at the edge and then Starcast Amber is sprayed over the Encore Brown, but in a wider pattern, to create a two-toned starburst.

  • High quality gloss lacquer
  • Specifically designed for wooden stringed instruments
  • Must be applied in very thin coats over Mohawk Vinyl Sealer

* Formerly Behlen B104-1201, B104-1202, B104-1203

Great product!

Great product!
I use this product for vintage coloring on maple guitar necks and also as the base/center color for both cherry and traditional sunburst finishes on guitar bodies. Not to give up trade secrets, but I also use a light coat over dark and dark stained woods before clear coating. I call it my "Midas Coat" as it gives a touch of golden warmth to the wood's highlights. This product is much better than ReRanch neck Amber which turns your wood banana yellow by the time you build up some color and does not go pumpkin orange under lacquer like some products. Also, the nozzles spray very fine droplets so you can "mist" it on from a distance and build your color gradually.

    While assembling a partscaster project, I wanted to try a spray lacquer for the neck instead on a wipe-on stain. While I practiced on scrap wood first, it was still a little darker than I would have liked, but it does provide a rich, vintage look on a maple neck. Sealed with a few quick coats of lacquer, the neck looks great and I have plenty left over for the next project. It arrived sooner than I was expecting. Wear your gloves and mask in a well ventilated area while using; I applied this outside on a warm, breezy day and I could still smell the fumes through an n95 respirator!

    Propellant ran out with over half the can still full. What I was able to use was great. Went on smooth and even. Very controllable, even tinting. Easily applied to new Warmoth bass neck. Just could not get half the product out of the can.

    Right, so I bought this because I didn’t want to pay StewMac $30 for a can of vintage amber lacquer. I figured hey, amber lacquer, may as well.

    I tested it on a Squier Bullet neck that has a small twist in it, since if I messed it up (which I did!) it wouldn’t be a big deal.

    I went way too heavy with it, so I’ve got a little more of an orange color than amber, but if I would have put maybe 2/3 as much on there it would have nailed the color I was looking for. I still might sand it all off and try it again, but that’s not the paint’s fault.

    Basically for half the price of StewMac, I’d say it’s great. Just go easy on it, really light coats, and it’ll give you what you’re looking for.
