From Hell: Alex Hunter 8 Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 1,320 ratings

Pompeii, present day: Archaeologist Maria Monti is working at a new dig site. Like hundreds before her she is investigating the night that Vesuvius erupted, consuming the ancient city with choking ash, scalding steam and rivers of lava.

But she has just unearthed something that shouldn't be there, something that makes her question everything she knows about the disappearances of that fateful event.

Several hundred miles away Alex Hunter's family is holidaying in southern Italy when Mount Etna begins to shake, and ash blankets the countryside. Hideous figures are moving about in the smoke, snatching people from the streets, and scans indicate they are being taken into the core of the erupting volcano.

Hell is rising and Alex Hunter must gather a team of his most battle hardened HAWCs to take on an adversary from the very depths of hell. Nothing will stop him from rescuing Aimee and Joshua, not even the devil itself.

If you haven't read the previous Alex Hunter books, then don't read this review (I don't want to spoil it for those that aren't up to speed ;-).

Like other readers/fans of Greig Beck, I have read everything he has put out. I have enjoyed everything I have read and get a big kick out of seeing how far he can take the Alex Hunter/Arcadian story. This story is even more wild than the previous stories. Some reviewers are getting nit picky about the "science". That is like going to the latest blockbuster movie and saying it it wasn't believable. Of course it isn't believable but it was fun. If you don't overthink the science and just try and roll with the story I am sure you will like/love this book as much as I did. There is action, suspense, horror, a combination of science and science fiction (perhaps even mythology) all wrapped up in one wild ride! If you liked the previous Alex Hunter books and are up to speed, you should enjoy this one!

    Happy Reading!

It's a good novel from the Arcadian Series. Greig Beck creates a new big bad pretty similar to his biggest success this far - the one under the antarctic ice. He also leaves room open for a sequel, letting a lot of things go unexplained. Only 4 stars because I almost never felt that the known characters are in any danger.

In the world still full of unexplained ancient mysteries,Greig Beck has wonderful ability of turning any of those mysteries into a fascinating tale.
Volcanic eruptions scared and devastated humanity for millions of years, but what comes out of Earth with smoke, ash and lava?
What kind of creatures come out as well, what drives them and who are their human slaves, who,as a cult, existed on Earth from the dawn of time?

Alex Hunter and his HAWCS attempt to understand that ancient mystery going into the depth of volcano, into incredible heat and meeting the Evil nobody ever encounted.
The strange and repulsive entity which has no name and whose origin cannot be explained lives in hot lava, where no man can ever venture, undisturbed from the time the Earth was born.
Can that entity be defeated or, at least, understood?

The book is hugely entertaining but also scary in the way phenomena defying explanations can scare us all.
And Greig Beck in From Hell tells us about one of so many secrets hidden under water,in the middle of a jungle and in the heart of the Earth.

I highly recommend From Hell to all lovers of mysteries.

Mr Beck is one of the most readable authors in print right now. His blend of Sci Fi and horror is unique in the field. The character of Alex Hunter is both engaging and believable as a super hero. That word is over used and has become trite within the context of comic book characters. But Mr Beck has created in Alex Hunter a uniquely flawed and human super-man.
I have read everything in the Alex Hunter cannon as fast as I could lay hands on it. That goes for everything G. B. has written except for his teen aged apocalyptic novels. Those tomes boast a double whammy to my personal interests. Teenagers are far too self absorbed to hold my adult interests and point of view. And the end of the world is not something I care to contemplate often. I don't see a lot to look forward to in that scenario. In fact, the heroics of Alex Hunter go a long way to preventing world ending disasters of one kind or another.
Everything about From Hell was spot on! I am just greedy enough to hope that he continues to expand the adventures of Alex Hunter for another decade or so, at least.

There are more things in heaven and earth than we can imagine and this book plunders the depths of human imagination....When even the Arcadian has to have assistance to prevail things are dire. However when a renegade lovelorn android takes Alex and his family captive, things become even more tangled and desperately deadly.... And now with Alex out of the loop and temporarily sidelined, who can "fix the unfixable"? Five stars plus and have the next in the series ready beside you to read!

I've ben reading Greig Beck since he burst onto the sci-fi/adventure scene with BENEATH THE DARK ICE and introduced "the Arcadian", supersoldier Alex Hunter in 2009. I've bought and read everything he's published since then. Many of the novels are terrific. They were well-researched, based on at least semi-plausible science and technology and really exciting. Many noteworthy characters in addition to Alex Hunter, including Matt Kearns and even a teen-aged native American, Arnold Singer, who starred in his own two book YA series.

But in the last few years, the science has grown more and more fantastical and unbelievable. Alex Hunter novels are now more like fantasy than sci-fi, and the research and even the writing seems to have become more and more sloppy. And now, with FROM HELL, all pretense of believable SF has flown out the window. Beck has turned Alex Hunter into a parody of a comic book superhero. He has gone from a wounded specialist ops guy who was on the verge of death when subjected to experimental treatment that not only cured him but made him very strong and very fast, to someone who is for all intents and purposes Superman without the cape. He can't fly, but has become able to lift many tons, heal super fast, possess super vision and other super senses. He's no fun anymore. And the tech that the his band of more human brother HAWCS possesses has far surpassed the wildest inventions of Ian Fleming's weapons master Q. And the carefully researched biology that many of the earlier novels was based on has, well, mostly evaporated. What a pity.

I give FROM HELL 3 stars, grudgingly, because Beck can sure as hell still plot with the best of them, and his pacing is still great, and I am curious where he is going to take the quickly developing superpowers of his son Joshua and their psychic link, but I sure miss the old Alex when he was still just a man and could be hurt or killed.

Recommended Only for Alex Hunter fans.

4.0 out of 5 stars Started off as good stories but getting silly now.
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on September 22, 2019
I liked Alex Hunter from the beginning but rather think Greig has reached the end. This is getting to the silly stage with red hot demons and other implausible aspects. I appreciate this is escapist fiction but I still want the story to have a ring of probability. These verging off that scale so I won't be buying anymore unless they come back to some semblance of reasonableness.
