Based on the thrilling real-life story of a socialite spy and astonishing woman who killed a Nazi with her bare hands and went on to become one of the most decorated women in WWIIfrom the New York Times bestselling author of I Was Anastasia and The Frozen River.

"Will fascinate readers of World War II history and thrill fans of fierce, brash, independent women." —Lisa Wingate, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Before We Were Yours

Told in interweaving timelines organized around the four code names Nancy used during the war,
Code Name Hélène is a spellbinding and moving story of enduring love, remarkable sacrifice and unfaltering resolve that chronicles the true exploits of a woman who deserves to be a household name.

It is 1936 and Nancy Wake is an intrepid Australian expat living in Paris who has bluffed her way into a reporting job for Hearst newspaper when she meets the wealthy French industrialist Henri Fiocca. No sooner does Henri sweep Nancy off her feet and convince her to become Mrs. Fiocca than the Germans invade France and she takes yet another name: a code name.

As Lucienne Carlier, Nancy smuggles people and documents across the border. Her success and her remarkable ability to evade capture  earns her the nickname The White Mouse from the Gestapo. With a five million franc bounty on her head, Nancy is forced to escape France and leave Henri behind. When she enters training with the Special Operations Executives in Britain, her new comrades are instructed to call her Helene. And finally, with mission in hand, Nancy is airdropped back into France as the deadly Madam Andree, where she claims her place as one of the most powerful leaders in the French Resistance, armed with a ferocious wit, her signature red lipstick, and the ability to summon weapons straight from the Allied Forces.

But no one can protect Nancy if the enemy finds out these four women are one and the same, and the closer to liberation France gets, the more exposed she
and the people she lovesbecome.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

An Amazon Best Book of April 2020: In 2015, a friend informed Ariel Lawhon, author of I Am Anastasia, that if she didn’t write about Nancy Wake, said friend would no longer speak to her. Lawhon resisted, and wrote I Am Anastasia instead. But she did start to read about Nancy Wake and her extraordinary life, fell in love with her, and realized that this was a woman whose name should be known. Her admiration for Wake comes through on every page of Code Name Hélène, so named for one of the four code names under which Wake operated as one of the most fearless and effective leaders of the French Resistance. With the same brio with which the Australian Wake talked her way into a job as a journalist for the Hearst Corporation, Lawhon interweaves four timelines, each one corresponding to the code name Nancy was using at the time. Armed with a code name, her signature red lipstick, an ability to negotiate arms deals over a bottle of brandy without ever losing out—or passing out—and a willingness to take to the battlefield while her husband held down the fort at home, Nancy Wake made the kinds of sacrifices that made heroes of other soldiers. That Code Name Hélène is also a wartime love story that can hold its own with such novels as The Nightingale is icing on a delicious gâteau. —Vannessa Cronin, Amazon Book Review

Review

"Ariel Lawhon delivers in Code Name Hélène. This fully animated portrait of Nancy Wake— underground operative, charmer in red lipstick, loving wife, and hard-hitting woman of her times, will fascinate readers of World War II history and thrill fans of fierce, brash, independent women, alike. A stark exploration of the remarkable difference one person, willing to rise in the face of fear, can make."—LISA WINGATE, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Before We Were Yours

"Fascinating."
NEW YORK POST "REQUIRED READING"

“A spellbinding work of historical fiction. . . [and] one of the most sensual romance novels you’ve ever read. . .
She is real, this really did happen is the mantra you may find yourself repeating, in awe of every page.”BOOKPAGE, *STARRED*

"A compulsively readable account of a little-known yet extraordinary historical figure—Lawhon's best book to date."
KIRKUS REVIEW, *STARRED*

“Magnificent. . . Lawhon carries us into the heart of the French resistance [and] into the mind of a badass heroine with uncanny instincts who takes on the Nazis and men’s arrogant sexism with uncommon bravado. . . Even long after the last page is turned, this astonishing story of Wake’s accomplishments will hold readers in its grip.”
BOOKLIST, *STARRED*

"Readers will be transfixed by the story of a woman who should be a household name."LIBRARY JOURNAL *STARRED*

“Riveting. . . [A] stunning, moving story.”—BOOKREPORTER.COM

“Masterful. . . Exhaustively researched and vividly woven. . . As much an epic love story as an engrossing narrative of an unlikely anti-Nazi combatant. . . Lawhon has proven herself a master at her craft, and she does readers a great service with Code Name Hélène.”CHAPTER16

“Captivating. . . [Lawhon] sweeps readers into Nancy’s wry, fast-talking, first-person account of her adventures. . . While Nancy cuts a vivid, stylish figure through the novel’s pages, her supporting case is also well drawn [and] Lawhon’s elegant plotting makes them shine. . .Lawhon’s gripping narrative gives ‘Hélène’ her due.”
SHELF AWARENESS

"Gripping…Lawhon throws readers into the middle of the action… Lawhon’s vivid, fast-paced narrative will keep readers turning the pages, and a detailed afterword makes plain how much of the account is factual. This entertaining tale does justice to Lawhon’s larger-than-life subject.”

Incredible! A must read!
One of the best historical fiction books I’ve read. It reads like a page turning thriller. This isn’t the typical WWII novel - it’s a fascinating account of a heroic real life female resistance leader in France.

Because I read so often, I guess I’m pretty judgmental about all the authors that are out there! I have to say that I love Ariel Lawhon’s writing! I think I’ve read almost all her books and I’m sure I’ll read the last one very soon. I’ve read books about Nancy Wake, written by different authors, but Code Name Helenne written by Lawson is outstanding! I’m not going to talk about the book itself, just that it’s such a joy to pick the book up each time and learn more about this outstanding person who was truly a heroine of World War II! I know the author took some liberties, which makes it all the more enjoyable. I love this author, and I am looking for anything that she writes. She’s truly an outstanding storyteller!

A totally riveting story based on a real person and her exploits. It’s hard to believe that one person could and did all the things that the main character did. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I really enjoyed this story I knew nothing about Nancy Wake before I read this book. She sounds like such an amazing woman. My only issue was with the end I feel like after the war was over and she finds out her husband is gone I lost interest in her lead up to her jump in to France. So I ended up skimming or skipping those chapters. But overall great story

Fantastic book! I loved every minute of reading it and am so sad to have finished it. The story of The White Mouse is amazing, awesome and seems beyond possibility. The story is peeled back layer by layer. Love this.

The Frozen River was so good that I expected a similar experience here. It is well written with interesting characters. However, the dualing time lines were so confusing and distracting, and the main character was so over the top and unbelievable that it seemed much closer to fiction than historical fiction.

Wow!!! A few too many later than intended nights reading this book because I wanted to know what happened next. Was inspired by the strength, tenacity, vulnerability and determination of the heroin, Nancy. While a fictional work, the connection to the real heroine; insight into the horrors faced by all at that time and the sacrifices made to stand up to evil has left a huge impression on me.
