- Reviewed in the United States on December 4, 2019This is not the easiest of reads.
Peter does not mince any words - this is not a "learn anything in 15 minutes" type of book.
Rather, this is a blueprint to effective, practical self-directed learning. It is not an easy fix, but it is thorough, practical, and completely doable.
I am a teacher myself, and I found a number of techniques I will be adding to my tool bag next semester. I am also a self directed student, and I am beginning to use these techniques myself.
His "five C's" of academic buoyancy were really good, and his description of how to use the Pomodoro Technique in elevating stages was very helpful. But his discussion and stress on how to use failure positively really helped - both for myself and as an additional insight to share with my students. And I appreciated his application of Bloom's Taxonomy.
Although Mr. Hollins is dealing in depth with many of the most current and effective modes of teaching and learning, I really enjoy his writing style. He manages to share the most academic methods and subjects in plain language, and even spiced with a bit of humor.
An excellent book, and one I will be using immediately for my own development as well as applying to my classroom.
- Reviewed in the United States on August 24, 2021Book is insightful, breaks down unhealthy learning mentalities and explains how to be efficient just like it said! Good mindset change and explains the steps needed to be efficient.
One con is completely unrelated to the product and more so delivery. I ordered it brand new and upon arrival the bag had seemed almost opened, and the book was damaged along with another I had ordered. The bottom of this book’s pages now has dents. The book itself is a good read!
- Reviewed in the United States on December 3, 2019This book does exactly what it says: it provides highly structured strategies for teaching yourself virtually anything. While I may not agree with 100% of his claims and conclusions, they are all worth your time and consideration -- who knows? You may find some suggestions here you never before considered, and that can only be a good thing. The book's length is just right, without providing reason for procrastination. His examination of issues is sufficiently detailed without feeling overly academic. Overall, this book was a good purchase! Thank you!
- Reviewed in the United States on January 17, 2021I had read many self improvement books and attempted self learning. This is the book I wished I have read earlier in my life, and one that I am actively recommending to friends and family.
A lot of self improvement book or books about learning focus on the techniques. For example the Cornell Method for note taking and etc. The one addresses the larger and more critical part that holds people back from learning and dispel problematic viewpoint. The best part of the book IMO is the part about overcoming self-doubts and the problematic views that hold us back. It helped me realize my own issues and I see my friends and family facing similar issues. It's also super short so it is easy to recommend to people

- Reviewed in the United States on December 5, 2019This book was to the point, gave helpful explanations, and ways to practice the lessons being taught. The reading was enjoyable. I have seen elements of the information shared in the book from other places, but I liked the unique way it was put together and it was nice to have a complete program to help people study and learn new things.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 11, 2019I like Peter Hollins way of writing and explanation of concepts in plain language but with clear scientific and psychological studies. This book is no different.
The chapter of four pillars of self learning was really setting the foundation, which most people miss when learning on their own. Then tactics for learning are quite good. I learned quite a few new tricks from the book.
This book is worth way more than the money spent. Go for it.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enlightenment
This book is a nice addition to the Deep Work book by Newport. Specifically the discussion about spaced practice and overcoming procrastination and understanding the role of failure were useful additions. There were other interesting discussions as well. This was a helpful read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very useful information
As a person with dyslexia I liked the fact there were regular summaries, which is helpful to process complex information. I found the information enlightening and thought provoking. I felt there were some good logical reasons for the need for breaks and I found the information about attention span very useful.
