Editorial Reviews

Playing The Room bears testimony to the long musical friendship of Avishai Cohen and Yonathan Avishai who explored jazz as teenagers in Tel Aviv, and have continued to play together over many years. Their first duo album begins with music composed by the trumpeter and by the pianist and concludes with a touching interpretation of Israeli composer Alexander Argov's cradle song "Shir Eres". Along the way, Avishai and Yonathan improvise - freely, playfully, soulfully - on themes from jazz tradition

This is an album by the duo of Israeli Jazz musicians: trumpeter Avishai Cohen and pianist Yonathan Avishai. The album presents nine tracks, two original compositions (one each by the duo members), one by Israeli composer Alexander Argov, five Jazz standards and one Pop standard. The music was recorded by Stefano Amerio and offers the expected sublime sound quality. It is the 3rd album by Cohen released on the ECM label.

The music is set in a highly melodic, almost romantic mood, relaxed and minimalist, emphasizing the beauty of the compositions and the intimacy of the duo setting, all in the “Art of the Duo” tradition. Both musicians toy with the melodies and rhythmic patterns playfully and charmingly, displaying their complete mastery of their respective instruments, eschewing any flashy displays or unnecessary ornamentation.

One might wonder how these interpretations might have been received by the original composers (John Coltrane or Ornette Coleman for example), but they would probably just smile, despite the liberties the duo applied to the music. There is no doubt that the ECM mood and aesthetics were closely observed.

Overall, this is a very elegant and highly polished Jazz album, which offers a pleasant listening experience for a wide spectrum of Jazz listeners, but displays the tendency of ECM producer Manfred Eicher to clutch all the music produced by the label into a uniform aesthetic and aural mould, which at some cases stifles the spirit of the music. Personally I prefer the earlier recordings by Cohen, which display more adventurous approach, but his trumpet work is here, as always, beyond reproach.

    JAZZ FOR GOURMETS
Avishai Cohen and his lifelong friend Yonathan Cohen, after several collaborations in ECM almus meet again to make a record duo, trumpet and piano, is a delicacy for those who understand jazz as a form of mental and personal introspection . Absolute relaxation, great pleasure in your interpretations and a perfect sound thanks among other things to the space where the recording is made, the Stelio Molo Auditorium in Lugano. The program is varied but always very intimate, to highlight a traditional lullaby that closes the album. For those who search in jazz, peace, intelligence and reflection is the ideal record.

This record is a gorgeous piece of music making. ECM does a great job of getting all the "fiddly" bits correct. It sounds amazing as well. Delivery was ahead of schedule as well...so thanks for that. Enjoying side 2 as I write.

    Peace and be well!

Firstly the quality of the studio recording and pressing is faultless- easily the quietist vinyl I’ve heard from ECM (and their benchmark is already set consistently high) This is even more of an accomplishment during some of the more delicate performances by Avishai & Yonathan. The material from Avishai on this album takes his performance in a slightly different direction from his other ECM productions such as Cross My Palm With Silver and Into The Silence- more of a traditional jazz feel, which actually comes across as a pleasant change. I love the other 2 albums and having this subtle contrast means I can happily listen to several of his LP’s in one sitting. This is probably (for me) the album which I now compare every other ECM album in my collection to in terms of production quality. A credit to the label. Well done.
