Tracing Your Ancestors Using DNA: A Guide for Family Historians Kindle Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 284 ratings

An easy-to-use, straightforward guide for British family historians looking to trace their ancestry using DNA testing.

DNA research is one of the most rapidly advancing areas in modern science, and the practical use of DNA testing in genealogy is one of its most exciting applications. Yet there is no recent British publication in this field. That is why this accessible, wide-ranging introduction is so valuable. It offers a clear, practical way into the subject, explaining the scientific discoveries and techniques and illustrating with case studies how it can be used by genealogists to gain an insight into their ancestry.

The subject is complex and perhaps difficult for traditional genealogists to understand but, with the aid of this book, novices who are keen to take advantage of it will be able to interpret test results and use them to help answer genealogical questions which cannot be answered by documentary evidence alone. It will also appeal to those with some experience in the field because it places the practical application of genetic genealogy within a wider context, highlighting its role as a genealogical tool and suggesting how it can be made more effective.

"The first of its kind, "Tracing Your Ancestors Using DNA: A Guide for Family Historians" is as thoroughly 'user friendly' in organization and presentation as it is invaluable as a complete and comprehensive course of instruction in the role DNA can play for family historians and genealogists."
Midwest Book Review

“It provides introductory foundational material for those new to the subject of genetic genealogy, and at the same time provides in-depth material with examples for those who understand the fundamentals and want to learn more.”

Comprehensive and full of helpful case studies, this book covers far more than many other books on DNA research. The sections on Y-DNA research were particularly helpful, as that is a neglected area in other works, particularly those sold in the US where autosomal research is more popular. I cannot recommend this one enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars A difficult subject made well within your grasp by this book

A very well written, and well explained book about an extremely complex subject. I think that the only way to read it is to start at the beginning and read small sections at a time, taking in each paragraph and thinking it over until you understand its meaning. You are then ready to read some more and understand that also. It is not a dull book because the author tells some interesting stories to keep his readers entertained as they soak up his educated teaching.
I am feeling that I now have some knowledge of my DNA results and what I can learn still further, using them.
I suppose that the `teach a man to fish, and you will feed him for a lifetime` saying is what really comes to mind.
I feel that I have been taught a difficult subject by an interesting and learned teacher and will benefit in my family history research for the rest of my life.

Having dived into the Ancestry DNA test after a couple of years of family research online I didn’t really know what to expect, just had high hopes. Wish I’d read this first, even if I didn’t understand everything first time round. Would have saved hours of rummaging through Wikipedia and help files.
