After years as a homicide investigator in a big city, Detective Sidney Becker accepts the position of police chief in her hometown—a peaceful mountain community in Oregon. Life is good. Beautiful scenery. Low crime. Close to family. Then a woman is found brutally murdered in the woods. The staging of the body resembles a victim found in the same area years earlier. The case went cold. Now the killer has come out of hiding. The only clue found at the crime scene is an origami butterfly with a handwritten verse inside. Sidney finds she is pitted against a killer more cunning than any she has faced before. She must decode his cryptic message and lure him into the open—before he strikes again.

I don’t usually read mystery thrillers. But after thoroughly enjoying Linda Berry’s Hidden Part One and Hidden Part Two, I decided to try Quiet Scream. I was completely hooked by the first few pages. I was right there in the woods at night with Ann, immersed in the terror and use of instinct and wits to outsmart the killer. The plot and pacing are excellent, as is Linda’s descriptive style of writing. Linda is exceptional at setting the mood and tone for each scene. She seamlessly interweaves beautiful descriptions of nature with her complex development of plot and characters. As a balance to all the intensity, I loved the animal characters, Chili, Curry, and especially Arthur. And as a “foodie”, I really enjoyed the descriptions of the meals Ann and Selena were cooking. I wanted to join them for lunch and dinner every time! I wish “Selena’s Kitchen” really existed; I would be a loyal customer. It was a fun few days as I devoured 50 pages here, 100 pages there, happily neglecting anything I could so I could just keep reading. I suspected everybody along the way, yet was totally surprised at the end. What an engrossing story and colorful cast of characters! This is an excellent read, I highly reccomend it.

      Abuse triggers animal and human

This stand-alone is easy to follow but at times difficult to read due to emotions evoked. No editing errors or drag-you-down drama. There is graphic violence.

Intriguing, fast-paced storyline with multiple suspects to keep the reader guessing. Descriptive writing that draws one into each scene. Very flexible procedures, actions and reactions. Believable characters with distinct personalities. Thought-provoking and realistic dialogue.

“God knows, there’s plenty of folks around here who could use it. When I worked up in Alaska, I delivered all road kill to churches and charities. It went a long way in feeding the poor and homeless.”

There were so many lost people in the world, slogging through the @@@@ fields of life, wearing painted masks of happiness. Something Sidney understood too well. Master of illusion.

“Therapy is not a panacea. It’s not something you complete or recover from, like the flu. You just keep pushing through the pain until you reach the other side.”

No desire to re-read this story. I always look forward to works by this author.

Sidney is the chief of police in her small hometown, but she worked as lead detective in murder investigations in a city. She has seen horrors and dealt with them. But, she wants a more peaceful life now. Sidney lives with her sister, Selena. The two are very different but love one another. This story revolves around a serial killer who is murdering women in the small town. As the story develops, you are drawn into Sidney’s life. The story takes an unexpected twist but it makes sense. Very good story that is well written and in depth. Love the descriptions of the scenery.

This was intense! Because I'm a person who has read way more psychological thrillers and mysteries that is healthy, I have a knack for sniffing out plot twists, regardless of however kooky they may seem. It's so delicious being able to discover whodunit and why they did and I swore I had it, though a nagging feeling in the back of my head insisted the author was far more clever than I gave her credit for.

And then when the reveal came, I was shocked but also gratified because it made sense, but I never considered the possibilities because of how skillfully the story was woven, the author takes readers on a journey that you won't be sure you're ready for until you embark.

This was such a good read, I'm looking forward to the rest of the series (though I'm not a mystery series kinda gal)

Sidney, the police chief, came back home to the small town to get away from gruesome crimes. Unfortunately, one of her fellow citizens has different plans for her. She needs all the skill and knowledge from her career as homicide detective to keep her neighbors including her own sister safe.

It goes to show that a small, quiet town can still harbor enough criminals to make up a sizable suspect pool. Sidney has her hands full and follows the evidence and clues she finds along the way.
This story is told from a variety of perspectives that give us a well-rounded look at the inside and outside of the main characters. The story is geographically and time-restricted, resulting in a fast-paced, action-packed thriller with a few scenes to cool off, before action revs up again.

Love it and will read again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Very detailed, twisty and mysterious
Reviewed in Canada on February 7, 2022
This story was very good in doing what it set out to do with making my heart race, my brain wonder and my detective skills put to work. Berry introduces us to many characters, with Chief Sidney being the primary, and made it easy to keep them all straight somehow.

We are invited into a small town where almost everyone knows everyone else but learn quickly that recognizing someone in the market doesn't mean you really know them.

A gruesome murder starts off the adventures of mayhem, mystery and a bit of romance which leads me to my only complaint. There were a lot of woman who, although scared of an unknown murderer in town, met and quickly trusted men they barely knew. Knowing the murderer was a man from a reliable, yet undetailed witness account, in a town where the author stresses everyone is close knit, I found it unbelievable how many first introductions were being made and how quickly a woman would be alone with a man she just met.

Overall, a good book with a great twist and I would definitely consider buying a book by the same author in the future.

      Thanks for reading,

      Sarah Butland
