Editorial Reviews
In Berkeley, CA, back in the late '70's my then brother in law NeilSheehan and I decided to start a band. It would be a power pop triowith me on guitar and Neil managing and writing lyrics. We sought outa drummer and a frontman/bassist, and in December of '79 we found themplaying on the local bay area scene.
Our lead vocalist/bassist Andy Milton was from Cleveland, Ohio. Hewas 6ft. tall, good looking and had a voice like a modern day Elvis.
Our drummer Jeff Campitelli was fresh out of high school. A local phenomwho could groove like Charlie Watts but with a new ferocious energy thatwould help propel the band into the burgeoning New Wave music scene.
We called ourselves "The Squares", or sometimes just "Squares". Therewere other bands with the same name but we were determined to getto home base first and claim the name. That never happened. We werepart Van Halen and part Everly Brothers. A mix of heavy metal, rock'n' roll, punk and new wave. We were hard to pin down and categorize, which is most likely why we never "made it"!
But as we were trying our best to get a record deal and becomesuperstars we had a lot of good times, and we laid down some seriouslygood music. We were ahead of our time, which, in this case, is anotherway of saying we were out of step with what people were looking forback then.
Ultimately, I left the band I started to pursue a solo career. It wasgut wrenching to walk away from something I put all my heart and soul into, but, as it turned out it was the right thing to do.
What remains are the original early '80's tracks recorded and mixed byour then live sound engineer John Cuniberti. We've restored the originalrecordings, brought them into the digital world, and with loving handsand ears John has remixed the best of what we did in the studio. Theysound better than ever. John was careful to preserve the band'soriginal intent with regards to song arrangements, sound and vibe, and in some cases, extremely creative mix ideas.
Turn it up and enjoy The Squares!

- Reviewed in the United States on February 5, 2020OK true story: It was a Sunday Brunch Jam at The Palms Cafe on Polk Street circa 1981 or 2. We were all hung over from a late night of gigs, sipping Bloody Mary's. I was sitting with 3 of the best guitarists on the scene (including my then-boyfriend). The Squares were onstage, doing their classic power pop thing. The guys I was with started lightheartedly debating which one of them was the better axe man. Finally, I interrupted them and said, "Dudes, look at the stage! It's Joe!" They were stunned for a few minutes. Then they started in, "Oh the Squares are okay, but so commercial. Sure, Joe can pay a catchy lick, but...the best? Really?" Yeah years later I TOTALLY won that argument!!! Thanks, guys, for the many, many nights of good music and good fun. And thanks for bringing back those memories!

- Reviewed in the United States on October 15, 2021If you liked The Producers, Vapors, Laughing Dogs etc...it's right in there! I love when Joe plays with a band, I have all his stuff and love his playing but love him in a band song context. My favorite guitar players are the ones that do short bursts of brilliance and he does here! James Leonard from Laughing Dogs was another that could blow you away with great playing! I love this album for sheer listening pleasure, great for driving!
- Reviewed in the United States on August 13, 2020This would have made a solid debut album around 1980 or so. It’s just a fun record. Remember when music was allowed to be fun? Just crank it up and tap the steering wheel fun? Sing along and laugh at the chorus fun? All I got to say is where’s my fuzzy white dice and my Le-Tigre’ slashed shirt?! Long time Satch fans might need to be reminded that this was a different time, and a different young band just coming out with a different sound than Surfing would have five years later. So few basement tapes are this much fun. Thank you sir.
- Reviewed in the United States on November 22, 2019Excellent sound quality which was a concern to me on older materials. If you are a Joe Satriani fan and want this to complete your collection then you should be pleased with this recording. It sounds like an a little above average 80's rock group. I can imagine listening to this for the first time and saying "It's pretty good but who in the hell is that on guitar? Wow!". He is definitely setting for his "Surfing with the Alien" debut
- Reviewed in the United States on June 2, 2020Very tight performances and well mixed. I think this is up there w/some of the best 80's music. Satriani's playing is an obvious precursor to his solo career. Many of his techniques/style are heard throughout. Def worth your money.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 28, 2020I love this album. It's sort of like THE POLICE's music meets the BEATLES vocals but better. The lyrics are pretty goofy but well-done and the music is TIGHT! Satch hits a LOT of amazing notes in his solos. Just buy it.
- Reviewed in the United States on April 15, 2021If you are looking for a hidden gem, the Squares are it.
- Reviewed in the United States on February 1, 2022Meh... If you're considering buying this, I highly recommend giving the whole thing a listen online for free first. It's just not that great. The tunes aren't terrible, they're well done and sound good, but not something I'd listen to much, if ever again. This is definitely not a Satch album by any stretch. For collectors and collection completion only.

5.0 out of 5 stars Rocking!
If you wonder what Joe Satriani was doing before he met the Silver Surfer, you'll find your answer here. Great, catchy songs straight out of the 80's Power-Rock trend. Surprisingly filled with catchy riff that have aged well, it makes you wonder why Squares was never signed by a Label. If you love Joe's music, this is not it. But if you like Joe's playing, then you'll enjoy these songs and find yourself singing some of them.

4.0 out of 5 stars "UNVERÖFFENTLICHTE DEMOS VON JOE SATRIANIS ERSTER ROCKBAND"
