OK true story: It was a Sunday Brunch Jam at The Palms Cafe on Polk Street circa 1981 or 2. We were all hung over from a late night of gigs, sipping Bloody Mary's. I was sitting with 3 of the best guitarists on the scene (including my then-boyfriend). The Squares were onstage, doing their classic power pop thing. The guys I was with started lightheartedly debating which one of them was the better axe man. Finally, I interrupted them and said, "Dudes, look at the stage! It's Joe!" They were stunned for a few minutes. Then they started in, "Oh the Squares are okay, but so commercial. Sure, Joe can pay a catchy lick, but...the best? Really?" Yeah years later I TOTALLY won that argument!!! Thanks, guys, for the many, many nights of good music and good fun. And thanks for bringing back those memories!
