Editorial Reviews
Bill Callahan is back from the pasture with a flock of new tunes for the first time in six years. His roving humanism, looking forward and back with an astonishing mixture wry detachment and deep soul, is just the tonic for nations starving for good news from an old friend. The music is lovely dreamlike Americana stripped to the bone, as only Bill Callahan can. 1. Shepherd's Welcome 2. Black Dog On the Beach 3. Angela 4. The Ballad of the Hulk 5. Writing 6. - Reviewed in the United States on January 25, 2021An exquisite album that simply envelops you in its warmth, simplicity & humanity. Like an audio fireplace.
- Reviewed in the United States on July 21, 2019Wonderful. Easy paced with country flavor. Deeper insight into Bill’s daily life than usual.

- Reviewed in the United States on September 14, 2019I only buy certain music on vinyl now...music that I really want to hear the layers, complexity and even the quiet space...and this is one of those albums. Bill Callahan is back and I am so glad. I think he is one of the most underrated singer/songwriters out there. I have been a huge fan since Smog and none of his music has ever disappointed. I was lucky enough to get to see him on his most recent tour in support of this album and I just wish he could have played for hours more. He is a prolific poet and storyteller for our times...and of course stories change when life changes, as his has done recently...don't they for all of us, but he still makes music you want to crawl into and live there for awhile. I hope Bill Callahan's music remains part of my life for years to come. And I hope he doesn't take so long for another album or to tour again.

- Reviewed in the United States on June 15, 2019“It feels good to be writing again/clear water flows from my pen.” These are the words Bill himself uses to explain his return to songwriting after a long six-year absence from it. You see, dating back to his still continuing alliance with the Drag City label in 1991, Bill Callahan had never gone more than two years between album releases, whether under his SMOG moniker or using his actual name, often putting them out annually, for 22 years until 2013’s Dream River. He has since moved his home across state lines twice, gotten married, has a son, and recently lost his mother (i.e., he has lived a full life). He even hit a period of writers’ block in California. Now, six years later and replanted in Austin, TX, Bill has finally released what’ll surely become another career highlight.
Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest, however, is a definite departure from Dream River. Here, Callahan’s musings have shortened in length to mostly around or under three minutes and narrowed in focus to family affairs. Instead of a single panoramic philosophical album, you get an album and a half (one hour) of lots of warm and loose individual personal family vignettes that are still philosophical and probing in nature. A lovely example comes in the opening lines of the sublime “747,” when he contemplates, “I woke up on a 747/flying through some stock footage/of heaven/this is the light right here/before clouds bittersweeten/with suggestion/this is the light bald and bold as baby/crawling toward adulteration.” Lines like these and “you can call me anything/just as long as I can sing/I sing for answers/I sing for good listeners/and tired dancers” (from “Call me Anything”) show that this is also a record of deep gratitude.
One thing that hasn’t changed is the complexity and intricacy of Bill’s music. Listening to him remains challenging to so many because he continually eschews the traditional verse/chorus/verse structure in his compositions. Or maybe, as evident on this album, it’s because he rarely picks up the pace beyond a moderate strum. Indeed, Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest slithers along softly for six songs until we get to the mildly uptempo “747” and the ensuing “Watch me get Married.” On that song and the absolutely breathtaking “Son of the Sea,” Callahan clearly updates us further on how life has changed for him as a husband and father. Here, his classic sing-talking voice even dares break a tiny bit out of its well-honed baritone at times. Exquisite!
The last six songs on the album turn their attention to the subject of death, but not at all in a gloomy manner. Rather, Bill Callahan is accepting of it and even anticipates it in a positive light as he confides on “When we Let Go,” “and we will be waiting/and we will be strangers/our arms are open/and our hearts are exposed.”
Sonically, it may be surprising to learn that this is pretty much entirely an acoustic affair. There are NO electric guitars to be heard here; just the sound of Bill and long-time collaborator Matt Kinsey’s acoustic guitars delicately circling around each other as numerous other carefully chosen instruments (even a Wurlitzer, mellotron, moog, kalimba, upright bass, and [gasp] drum machine) are sparingly yet creatively utilized to great effect.
For now, I’m rating Shepherd in a Sheepskin Vest four and a half stars (rounded up to 5 stars due to Amazon’s system). Being as complex an album as it is, I need more time to mull over whether its tentative start is a plus or minus to me. Whatever the case may be, Mr. Callahan leaves no question that he doesn’t know how to release anything but very good to outstanding music and I wish not to have to wait another six years to hear from him.
- Reviewed in the United States on June 20, 2019i’ve Been following Bill Callahan since Smog and must that while I am happy he has returned to music, this new album is disappointing. There are 20 songs that just seem to meander and never really build into anything. The songs lack the sonic flourishes and textures that made earlier albums from both smog and first few releases using his real name so engaging and unique. The lyrics are of course poetic and clever, but the overall themes of domesticity and general contentness with life are boring. Listening to this album is a lot like receiving a letter from an old friend you haven’t seen in a very long time. The friend is happy and doing well and very but they’ve run out of good stories to tell because their life is now consumed with changing diapers and being settled.

Bill Callahan siempre entrega álbumes sin canciones de relleno y este es un buen ejemplo, un disco que se disfruta de principio a fin. Folk de excelente calidad. Lo recomiendo 100%

5.0 out of 5 stars Eccellente qualità artistica, buona e dettagliata incisione
Semplicemente meraviglioso. Per chi ama il cantutorato americano. Un must.
Diventerà presto un classico. Peccato per la tiratura limitata che lo ha reso già difficilmente reperibile. Se ne trovate una copia, acquistatelo senza pensarci due volte. Ne vale la pena.

5.0 out of 5 stars B. C. in Bestform
