there is no Other

Rhiannon Giddens’ album there is no Other, recorded with the Italian multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi, was produced by Joe Henry and tracked over five days in Dublin. The album is at once a condemnation of 'othering' and a celebration of the spread of ideas, connectivity, and shared experience. 'From the beginning of our musical partnership, Francesco and I have been struck with the commonality of the human experience through music; how instruments, modes, and the very functions of songs and tunes are universal from culture to culture,' says Giddens. “The overwhelming feeling we have is that there is no Other.'

I heard the excellent piece about this collaboration on NPR's World Cafe, notable in itself for Rhiannon's very candid and down to earth responses. The collaboration was brought about the interest of these two artists in highlighting the historical influences of African music and Arabic music on European and American music. The subtle acoustic blend of these musical influences is refreshing and delightful. The use of unusual historical instruments for this work produces a wonderful unique sound. When that is coupled with Rhiannon's pure and fluid sound, it leaves me breathless and smiling. You will notice that nearly all the rating bars on the individual songs are very high; if I were to rate them I would rate them all at the highest level. "Ten thousand voices" is very powerful in performance and emotion. The instrumental playing on "Briggs Forro" is fantastic. The emotion and tragedy in Little Margaret rises and blooms. I loved the performance of Rhiannon and her band at Freshgrasss 2018, but now I am looking for where she and Francesco will be performing.

Rhiannon's voice has that rare combination as no-nonsense and forthright while being technically virtuosic. This dose of Appalachian folk also showcases her to be a banjoist extraordinaire. It's made perfectly clear on the centuries old hymn "Wayfaring Stranger". Italian multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi provides exotic colorings to this American roots music which intensifies it. The sparseness and concision in both their instrumental accompaniment is exquisite, allowing American and World music to co-exist as one. How about Francesco's haunting accordion on "Black Swan" or his frame drum on the title instrumental? The words read as a major story of the past into today as a creative inspiration. And that story is a very real one. If this music doesn't garner a Grammy nomination (or win) for best Contemporary Folk Album or best American Roots Album, the fix is in.

This singer is amazing! A voice like hers doesn't come along often. I think of Odetta, I think of Joan Baez, maybe a few others. She is in good company. Rhiannon Giddens is thought of as a folk singer but in truth she sounds as though she can sing anything, she can even make the phone book sound good. Her accompanist on this program, Mr. Turrisi, is a fine instrumentalist who complements her singing very well. Ms. Giddens previously made her mark in the music business as the singer in a group called the Carolina Chocolate Drops. She is still relatively young and hopefully she will have a great solo career ahead of her.

I have long admired Giddens for her intelligence, her eclectic musical gift and her incomparable voice, but to my mind this is her masterpiece so far. Her brilliant rendition of the old folk song "Little Margaret" is one of the most dramatic songs I have heard in the last ten years, utterly transformed by Turrisi's ominous percussion. A gem! But the album's focus on "the other" could not be more timely. Giddens is producing a new American music by including ALL of the notes that create America's symphony. It is daring, nostalgic, painful, joyous and achingly beautiful.

In this CD of varied and amazing music, my favorite track was: there is no Other, an instrumental featuring Rhiannon's rhythmic banjo with Francesco's coupling percussion, listen, you can't sit still with this one. So good they had to make it the title. Another great instrumental, Briggs' Forro, with Rhiannon's banjo, a couple underlying sounds of violin?, surprising rhymes from Turrissi's accordion, and Rhiannon's soft, wordless, plaintive voice, all enclosed in four minutes of auditory dessert. Rhiannon's dedication to the roots of black music, her operatic training, her reaching back for the old songs in today's time, her song delivery and that voice -- indeed, there is no other.

If you're not familiar with Rhiannon Giddens, you can find youtube videos of her singing, in fact some of this album is up right now I believe.

She's honestly one of the best singers I've ever heard. This album puts her vocals to good work, while including a mix of songs dating from the 1600's (but with a modern take), to original pieces. The instrumentation is sharp, particularly in songs such as "Brown Baby" and "Little Margaret."

Finally get an album version of her singing "Wayfaring Stranger" and it is worth the wait!

I bought this after reading a recent profile of Rhiannon Giddens in The New Yorker that praised this CD. I was already a fan and also own her Tomorrow Is My Turn CD. Both CDs showcase her beautiful, clear voice and style, but I especially like this new one. Francesco Turrisi’s crisp instrumental accompaniment complements, doesn’t overpower. My favorite selection is the last track, “He Will See You Through,” a perfect balance of vocal and instrumental.

5.0 out of 5 stars Une très belle collaboration musicale

5.0 out of 5 stars Stunning album from a great talent
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on May 13, 2019
I don't usually review books or music, preferring to leave it to others more qualified. My opinions are my own - but I have to make an exception here. The one-star review below appears based largely on technology and does a stunning album a huge injustice. Rhiannon Giddens is one of America's most talented and original musicians, whether working with the Carolina Chocolate Drops, interpreting Bob Dylan lyrics or releasing her own albums. This collaboration with Italian multi-instrumentalist Francesco Turrisi finds her exploring new directions - blending African and Arabic rhythms with traditional sounds from America, on instruments old and new. Add Giddens' soaring vocals, which seem to get better with each album, and - imho - you have a contender for album of the year.
