Editorial Reviews

Elemental Music presents a complete previously unissued quintet performance by the great Woody Shaw recorded live at the Foyer Stadttheater, in Basel, Switzerland, on January 16, 1980. This outstanding concert features Shaw in the company of saxophonist Carter Jefferson, pianist Larry Willis, bassist Stafford James, and drummer Victor Lewis. This set contains a 16-page booklet with rare photographs, and special essays by famed jazz producer Michael Cuscuna and by Shaw's son Woody Shaw III. It also includes as a bonus, a previously unissued version of "We'll Be Together Again", taped in Austria in 1981, and which presents Shaw as the only horn in a quartet format.

Stunning performance, superb arrangements and very good sound.
I listen to most of my music "flat". This recording may need a little tweaking of the treble and bass in your system, however it is still very good indeed.
Woody Shaw was special. This recording proves it! Well done.
    Essential jazz recording.

Contrary to the review regarding “poor sound quality” and “bootleg,” this recording is Woody Shaw at his finest. Taken from family archives and produced by Woody Shaw III, this is a treasure. This is a live recording and has Woody Shaw displaying his phenomenal technique, passion, and virtuosic improvisation at the top of his game! A must have for any true Woody Shaw fan. Thank you Woody III for continuing to promote your father - a warrior and guardian of the art.

I'd previously read a negative review on this CD, and I have to disagree. All instruments come thru loud and clear- the sound is very good! Woody and band are on as always! For me, live recordings capture a different energy, an intimacy between the audience and musicians in the moment that studio recordings don't have. I also highly recommend the Live In Bremen 1982 on this same Elemental label.

Phenomenal playing by Woody and the band !!!

I'm dropping this short review in order to counter the inane remarks and 1-star ranking given by another reviewer. Sound quality may be highly subjective but that analysis could not be further from reality in this case. In fact, it almost led me to not order this excellent document even though it looked great on paper. Even the admittedly lo-fi samples on this site made it clear that this did not sound as bad as the reviewer stated so I took a chance and am thankful that I did.

The recorded sound is amazingly good, better in some ways than other archival Elemental reissues. The sound is detailed, tonally pleasing and balanced and ultimately sounds quite honest and true to source. It sounds like an acoustic Jazz ensemble recorded in a hall. What more could one ask for? And yes, it may require you to "turn it up" a bit, something I always appreciate in the modern world of hyper-compressed music.

Do not let that ridiculous review keep you from this fine document! Musically it is also killer, essentially 2 hour-long sets by a hot ensemble that is out to explore these tunes rather than just running through the hits or standards in orer to please a crowd as evidenced by the extended lengths of most of the tunes.

Highly recommended both musically and sonically.

5.0 out of 5 stars An artist honest expression

An unsung hero, Woody Shaw deserves much more recognition. Uncompromising music that moves on the edges of mainstream and avant-garde. The only commitment is that of the artists in these live recordings with themselves and how they transmit their music to us, fortunate listeners.

One of those nice suprises to come across. Music 5 starts, pressing 5 stars, mastering 4 stars (one of the few lps where I thought the digital version sounds better even when played on my top notch vinyl rig.

Disco straordinario oltre a Woody il solito gruppo altrettanto straordinario. L'unica pecca e nonostante tutto metto lo stesso 5 stelle è' che la versione cd è nettamente più completa rispetto al vinile che sonicamente è meglio.
